I have come from the doctor who says I have a floating rib. Mine is on the left side. It has re-occured off and on for 3years. I think mine is weight related. just wondering if others think so too!

Hi, I had he exact same problem when I was in high school. It's actually a really common issue. I went to specialist and the pain is caused by floating ribs rubbing against each other, crossing and uncrossing themselves.. While I was in high school I had them removed, That's the only real solution unless you decide to put up with the occasional pain. I'm starting to get the pains again almost 10 years later. They are more intense and sore, the doctor warned me that the ribs would eventually grow back since your floating ribs are all cartilage.

Hi I had the same problem doctor popped my rib back into the socket it was a little painful but now pain is gone.
I am 52 years old and a few days back, whilst pulling with my arms and resting against the rib cage for support, felt a sharp pain on the right side rib cage.
Eversince the apin becomes acute in the area when
1. I bend forward
2. I lie down and try to turn on my back
3. I cough
4. I laugh
This has become quite difficult now

Any suggestions

I have been suffering from the symptoms you all have been describing for five years now.  It is awful and never seems to go away.  If you need ideas on how to deal with the pain,

BROKEN RIBS:
I have been suffering for probably already more than a year from broken ribs or only God knows what else.
I know my doctors have tried to help me with x-rays, CAT scans and labs but nothing helps.
They simply can't figure out the reason for the pain.
My symptoms include unending nausea, pain in my left side(where i fell), sudden shortness of breath, sudden piercing feeling in my rib cage.
They can feel that my floating rib is out of place, but other than that they can't tell what else is bothering me.
The pain used to be tolerable but now i can't sit more than 30 mins w/out feeling nauseous and having my abdomen hurt.
The doctor says maybe the only option will be to remove it so that it doesn't bother me anymore.
TO anybody else that is going through this kind of pain, I hope that you can somehow find something that would help.
And please if there is something that you might know that might be of value for me to know, i would love to hear it.:)
Thanks

I cracked and dislocated my left floating rib in an accident and had successful treatment. After a year of pain I found a physical therapist who loosened my back over several sessions and then pulled the rib back in place. It lasted 2 years, until I used a machine to stretch and popped it out. I'm back in therapy with the same therapist. BTW, took several visits to convince doctors of the condition since it doesn't show on x-rays.

My nephew had this and saw a physiotherapist who helped him majorly and told him his problem was from a floating rib.

this is exactly what happens to me, i went to the dr and even a surgeon because they originally thought it was a hurnia, but when i saw the surgeon he showed me my ct results and it showed nothing wrong. he said the only thing he would think it is, is a floating rib.

I have this problem and its got worse in my older yeras (52 now) It started about 10 years ago. I anm Hyper mobile and if I dont exercise and keep my back strong the its more likely when Im stressed or have had a bad night sleep. My pain is incredible and I was hospitalised once.when it hits the only solution is valium and bed or whtever position you can get into .My advice if you are still young is stay strong in your muscular system.

From the mid to upper 20's the floating ribs can go through processes of calcification which can cause a pain that may feel like bruising at the rib tips.

My floating rib issue caused by leaning over at an angle and picking up ~20 lbs. hurt on one side in the back (around where the floating rib attaches to the spine) esp. when tying my shoes, or bending in a like fashion, esp. when to that left side. My chiropractor manipulated my spine one time (I could hear the pop!) and it was better, but still hurt after that. I went for massage, and after that it still hurt, but a couple days later it is way less. Stretching does seem to help.

Please go to a chiropractor! I'm a chiropractic assistant of 13+ years and my boss just now adjusted my floating rib back into place. Immediate relief!! It dislocates whenever I stretch too far with whatever activities. I don't like it when people settle for pain.
