I have this problem and it is related to Temporomandibular  Joint (TMJ) Disorders, not blood pressure or anything.  I have seen a TMJ specialist and gotten some relief by address my Bite issues. A full workup reviewing your Jaw and Spinal/Musclar-Akeletal alignments may be required.

Hope this helps.

This has been happening to me also in the last few months.

Had been for lunch and was wearing sunglasses .

when I got in to the lift to my apartment was shocked as I looked like I had implants on the side of my head.

they had vanished after 10 minutes.

reading this forum I will monitor the situation as I think it happens also after I eat.

i have been getting swollen temples when i chew stuff like nuts or other harder stuff. been happening since i did a course of steroids. they pump up like they are gonna explode and it looks weird and people comment on it.also i have something wrong with my ears, theyre always blocked up.its so horrible, thats been happening forever though.unsure if the temple thing is due to the steroids or if maybe its linked to the ear problem...

My temples swell when i chew stuff like nuts or other harder stuff. They swell like any other muscle being worked out with weights, and get tired and too stiff to chew any more until I rest for awhile... im 48 and have high bp, take bp meds and take a low testosterone meds...... have had the steroid based antibiotics giving for walking pneumonia and others sicknesses like .... Dr don't seem to concerned with it ... I've chewed gum before my visit to show how large the temple muscle will protrude ... And it will stick out a good 1/4" plus from my head (I'm bald) so I look like a very good looking alien from outer space! Lol glade I found this site to know I'm not crazy and alone in this matter. If anyone gets clued in to what causes this please inform!

I have had swelling of my temples now for 2 years, sometimes it is very painfull, the temples are very tender to touch and are hot, like burning.  Sometimes when I wake up one or both sides are swollen, I have been to my primary care doctor (pcp) and rhuemotoid specialist.  The R Specialist wanted to send me to a Nuerologist Specialist so I could undergo a biopsy of my brain; I didn't like that option, and I will never go back to the R doctor. The R doctor stated, that if they did the brain biopsy there could be side affects! No thank you, my doctor still doesn't know what is causing it. It is embarrasing!  I wanted to ask Dr. Oz, but I can never get through to him!  If anyone knows what causes this painful thing can you please list it. thanks!

I have the same problem. A friend suggested what might be the cause. There's no reason for the temples to swell up from chewing along. They have to be exasperated. Used to exhaustion. We are all most likely clenching our jaws while we sleep. If we can keep our jaws loose while sleeping, this might prevent it from causeing swelling in the future. Of course. Clench jaws are a by-product of anxiety or an overuse of stimulants. Hope this helps. I'm going to take notive of it myself.

This happened to me first time at age of 61. I chewed excessively that day at breakfast and lunch to the point I noticed I was giving my jaw muscles a real workout, probably 3 times as much as normal....I was trying to eat fast both times to meet people on ski slopes. Also chewing gum excessively. At 12,000 feet I am guessing it probably affected my blood pressure too. To boot, I had some black licorice in morning which I have heard affects blood pressure. And naturally I grit my teeth as I ski black diamonds. Still have it the next day at 4000 feet in elevation and relaxed. By the way, I have also been eating whey protein recently(creatine). Not much pain, happened on right side only, side I favor, because bridge on left.

Update from 1-3-14 post. I now think this was a muscle knot from excessive chewing. I could feel the swollen muscle strands with my thumb.
I massaged this area moderately with my thumb several times a day, similar to massaging back muscle knots I use to get. The lump went away the next day. However, allergies have also caused my head to swell, and this is very serious, no lumps and more puffiness and symmetrical, but you should get medical help immediately in this case.

I noticed a hicky on my left temple about 5 years, my family and friends have just noticed it, so it may have gotten bigger. I don't have pain, but when I eat hard food I feel the pressure so I'll slow down the chewing. I have some strange headaches at times, what I hate the most is that I can't wear head bands, a scarf, glasses, or beanie too long without feeling pressure. With Medical, my doctor won't try to run test that they my say was not urgent or life threating.
