I am pregnant and I go tanning pretty frequently. From what I have read as long as you are well hydrated and do not overheat you and your baby will be fine. I like to go in the mornings when its still cool in the tanning salon and if I ever feel I am getting too hot (I am a nervous nelly) I just simply get out. Tanning outside is fine as well as long as you do not overheat, the tanning bed is the same thing. You could also ask for an extra fan in your room, which is something I have done before as well.

You're obviously not that much of a "nervous nelly" or you wouldn't risk putting your unborn baby in harm's way!

and to the question: think about y you want to tan...do u really NEED TO? can it wait until after you have ur baby? and shouldn't u be looking up info from reputable sites instead of asking others? no offense most ppl do know a lot and are very helpfull but still. plus ur pregnant, your going to gain weight and other things no one care's what u look like while ur pregnant but you. its the truth. i'd say don't tan. and i work in a tanning salon

Airbrush tans are a one of the form of fake tanning. These come in form of spray-tan machines such as Mystic Tan (a non-UV spray on tan system that are now becoming popular in Urban Sun) or tans that are sprayed on you by a person from a small hand-held sprayer. The active ingredient of these is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a three-carbon sugar that causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the surface cells of the skin causing it to darken. Since the DHA affects the first layer of the skin only, the sugar-based chemical is not absorbed into the body and cannot reach the fetus. Thus it should be safe to use as long as the chemical does not penetrate the skin and as long as absorption does not occur. Because skin can be more sensitive during pregnancy, be sure to test spray a small area of skin prior to tanning the entire body. The nutrients added to some airbrush tanners can be beneficial for the skin and help a pregnant woman's skin remain nourished and elastic as the body stretches. Also, most tanning places suggest you use an after-tan lotion or moisturizing cream that is loaded with even more vitamins and nutrients, which further helps the skin. Because there are no definite conclusions regarding whether airbrush tanning is or isn't safe for pregnant women, you should consult your doctor if you have questions and make the choice yourself. There are no legal claims you can make should something actually happen to your unborn baby.

People do die from melanoma which you can get from a tanning bed. I was diagnosed at age 23, and am in remission. My grandma's melanoma spread to her brain and she died in 2006. I understand wanting to be tan- I used to tan multiple times per week. However, no matter what tanning salon owners or receptionists tell you- it is dangerous. I think I will believe the doctors on this one!

Im not sure many of these posters are very educated on the subject. Im not a big fan of tanning, but wanted some color for my upcoming wedding. I am twelve weeks pregnant. RULE OF PREGNANCY: Always ask your doc, not internet people!! Here's my docs advice: She says tanning is fine in moderation while pregnant, as the baby is very protected in its little sac! She says to follow two rules- MAKE SURE you are hydrated adequately, and do not stay in the bed for longer than recommended to avoid overheating. She says tanning for about ten minutes or so will not significantly affect your core body temperature. She also said ABSOLUTELY NOOOO SPRAY TANS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!! According to my doctor, there are chemicals in the mixture (used to "tan" you and keep the tan from washing off) that are absorbed by your skin and can actually can enter your bloodstream. No studies have been done on the affects of these chemicals on a growing fetus, by her guess is that they are most likely somewhat harmful.
Bottom line: always ask your own OBGYN for his/her opinion.

For what it's worth I lookedthis up about temperatures.....only to dismiss what people were saying about body temp.
Amniotic fluid is also important for regulating the baby's temperature. Even in very cold or very hot weather, the baby's temperature remains constant. He won't be bothered by winter or summer temperature extremes.

Here is what I have experienced from tanning while pregnant... I currently am pregnant with my second child and I have been tanning regularly in medium and high pressure beds. Now I'm no doctor and I dont know if what Im experiencing is due to tanning, but When I had my first baby she was a very large healthy baby, my current pregnancy however, the baby is normal and healthy, but he is considered a "smaller" baby. I am highly considering to stop tanning because maybe my baby is losing nutrients as I tan. I dont know. But sometimes when Im tanning and I can feel him moving in my tummy I just feel like Im hurting him. Im going to go in and see if I can freeze my account. I wouldnt consider tanning for any mother. If your pregnant and having a baby, put your baby above yourself, you might not look hot and sexy and beautiful for 1year due to your pregnancy, but you might be saving a life =)

I am pregnant, I have researched, asked My ob and I work in a salon. Tanning is an abrasion of the skin no harm done to your insides. All tanning beds should have proper fanning during tanning to keep your body temperature down. If they don't then you may have a problem with raised body temperature. All pregnant women should be taking prenatal which give more than vitamins than your body needs, when your body uses what it needs it just puts the rest in to waste. So anything you loose by tanning your body will take from your prenatal and replenish its self. If you are smart the way you go about you will be fine. If you aren't on vitamins, tanning in a bed with no fan for long periods of time then you are right... it is not good and harmful to your baby. Use your head if you feel to warm open the lid and get out. There is nothing holding you down and you dont need to go every other day to maintain a little color once every or i go every other week.

For the record, tanning twice a day will not kill you no matter what. I've done it twice a day, for months and months and months, and I am still alive and perfectly tan (:

"you said ask your ob and they will say no"
WRONG
I have been having really bad eczema and psoriasis during my pregnancy and in the past (although it has never gotten this bad) tanning has been my best cure..ive tried prescribed creams and nothing works as good as tanning..i asked my doctor if tanning was out of the question not to be tan (im pacific islander i do not need to tan to be brown) but to help my eczema and psoriasis..she said YES. She said to not tan too long maybe 5-7 minutes theres nothing that tanning can do to harm the baby except if you're body temp gets too high. This is why she said to keep it to a low time limit. ALSO have the fans on high maybe keep the door open if you can but just know that it is okay as long as you dont let yourself get too hot. If you can stand not to tan then just wait. you have the rest of your life to tan but if you really need to stay smart and safe about it.

I work in OB and have discussed this topic with many providers. ALL of them said it was completely fine to do so, however, they recommended covering your nipples as they are extremely sensitive and can be easily burned.

I talked with the owner of the tanning salon i go to and the main concern is your core temperature, stay in level one or two beds, and i go for shorter times. Also make sure to drink extra fluids so you do not dehydrate. This is off the subject however, true your baby is not able to regulate its own temperature, but I am a nurse and a low grade temp is acctually the first response of a babies immune system it is not reccomended to give tylenol until a temp reaches above 100.4, as anything below this can help fight illness.

Wow, you just contradicted yourself and said that tanning beds still "cook" you!! Not from the inside out but from the outside in. Like that is any better?? AND you said that the microwave cooked it from the outside and the inside was raw just like it was in the tanning bed. Don't try to act like you know what you're talking about because clearly you don't.

I have just recently become pregnant and went to my doctor and asked her, "Is it ok to tan while pregnant?" She told me me while she does not recommend tanning at all she told me it was perfectly fine to go tanning while I am pregnant. However she did give me some guidelines on tanning. The first was to only go a couple of times a week. The second was to only do short sessions. I do not go tanning just to go. I have a trip to the Domincan Republic coming up and I wanted to get a base tan going before I went. That being said her very simple response to that was, "I am allowing you to go to the Domincan and it is probably hotter there than it is in any tanning bed." Tanning only affects your skin. Not Your Baby!!!!
