I work in a dermatology office and am appalled at the lack of knowledge being given on this topic.

The sun's UV rays damage the DNA of the skin's epidermal cells, triggering enzymes that race to repair the damage. However, these enzymes do not always repair the DNA successfully, and all this unrepaired damage can lead to mutations that increase the risk of skin cancer.

UVA penetrates more deeply and causes more genetic damage in the skin cells where most skin cancers arise. The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization now designate both UVA and UVB as causes of cancer.

Darker skin does offer greater protection than light skin against sunburn and skin cancer. However, that applies only to people with naturally darker skin. Tanning, like sunburns, attacks the skin's DNA, producing genetic defects that may cause skin cancer.

Many say that tanning within moderation you will be fine, but let’s face it…your still exposing yourself unprotected (b/c I’m sure if you’re going to a tanning salon, you’re not putting on sunscreen ) to UV rays. Over a long period of time it all amounts up to harmful cell damage leading to future problems.

Anyone telling you tanning ,whether indoor/outdoor, unprotected is safe due to moderation, FDA required degrees allowed in the beds or “it’s mimicking the suns natural rays” probably are just workers in a salon and not an educated individual on dermatology. Although it mimicks the sun's rays, those rays are still harmful.

When I was pregnant with my first my Midwife told me it was okay to tan as long as I did not over heat my body! I have psoriasis and if O gonlond period of time without tanning it flares up really bad. I am now pregnant with my second and I still tan. Nothing is wrong with my first!!! It is okay aslong as you don't over heat your body. I go for 10 min three times a week!

I just learned that I am pregnant, not far along, maybe a month and I've gone tanning during that month not knowing if I was pregnant. I've only been going for 5 minute intervals. Should I be worried at all? or is the baby ok?

Well as enlighting as the subject has gotten, I just want to say I am a salon owner and I'm pregnant. My dr even told me if I'm comfortable enough to tan then it is my choice......personally I don't consider pregnacy a handicap and for the most part I still live my llife normally, this is my second pregnancy and my son has made it to 10 years old and I did not harm him with my pregnancy, and I'm sure the lille girl I'm carring now will be ok as well. If anyone is uncomfortable with tanning while pregnant as your salon tech to please provide you with a chair and just tan your legs. I've done that as well mainly cuz my ankles were swollen and I had to put them up anyway lol. So don't worry you guys are all good Mommas!

How is tanning outside when you are pregnant different from a tanning bed? all tanning beds have fans and you wont get dehydrated like would outside b/c you would only be in there for 2-3 min if you are pregnant anyways. it is to your own discretion.

No, there is no way a tanning bed can hurt your insides, nor you un-born butter bean! And Micro-waves, are pure radiation that cooks things, UV rays, are the only rays or waves you will get out of a tanning bed, and as someone said, baby can not regulate its body temp, they dont need to regulate it in utero, bc we all have an internal body temp, normal being 98.6 degrees. Baby is okay if you tan, dont let the myths get to you!

I was advised by my OB not to exceed normal body temp. even when in water. So I wouldn't tan just to be safe. Maybe try that spray tan they have out now until you have the baby.

It really depends on the type of the tanning bed. There are two possible principles – microwaves and strong white light. If tanning bed uses microwaves than you should stop immediately because microwaves cook things from the inside out!!!!!!!! They will easily hurt your baby inside. On the other hand there are tanning beds that you can use even while pregnant but even then you should stop tanning during last 3 months of pregnancy. Also, these tanning beds must me certified so ask staff in tanning salon do they have such beds and ask them to show you certificates for them.

so how long would that take to get a tan on the outside if that were true, completely ridiculous

I have researched this topic AND talked to my Ob/gyn and BOTH agreed that it IS safe to tan while pregnant.. ok, so tanning is never SAFE, but is it just as safe/dangerous to tan while pregnant as it is when you're not. It has no effect on your baby. When in doubt, as your DOCTOR.

Microwaves that is so funny! I'm pretty sure they would not be allowed to be manufactured let alone used! Tan beds give UVA and UVB rays.. Hahaha but that was a good laugh!

How far along were you? In the early stages the first few times you feel baby move, it feels like a rumbling, or bubbles in your stonache. Could have easily been that.

That story is a totally myth! Tanning beds give off UVB and UVA rays, same as the sun! And does the sun cook our insides.. No! The most harm a tanning bed can do is give you a sunburn if you tan for to long. There is no such thing as a tanning bed cooking your insides!
