Just searching the web for an answer to my loss of my sweet taste buds. For 10 days I have been sick with a cough, cold, headaches, loss of sweet taste (no fever) and sore throat. Only have been taking cough and headache medicine until I got Zpak yesterday. What is really driving me crazy is the loss of sweet tastes. Everything I eat tastes bitter - diet pop is the worst and I have lost 5 pounds.

Two weeks ago I started taking Prevaid for stomach issues. Can't find anything on the web that this medicine could be the reason of the sweet taste loss.

Can anyone help me?

Hi all, I've been posting here for the past year... been suffering from this no-sweet-taste thing for almost a full year now.

I created a Yahoo group so we can congregate there. Hopefully, most of you will not need to go there because your problem will have gone away and you are enjoying chocolate, ice cream and other sweet treats again. But if you are like me and are still suffering and the doctors can't figure it out, join me at the group!

I don't know if links are allowed here, so I've substituted the "." with " dot "

Hope to see you there. It's so helpful and encouraging to talk to others who understand about this problem. Thanks!

As I thought, links not allowed... you can go to Yahoo groups and look for nosweets. See you there!

Just this week I have been unable to figure out why my food tastes so bitter. I have change my diet to no sugar and a little bit of carbs over a 4 month period using stevia as my only sweetener and doing well, I have had no problem with that. The only change this week is I allowed myself to have the splenda candies which I have not used any of up to this point. I really think it is the Spenda.

I am 57 YOA and lost a significant amount of weight about 55 lbs - by eliminating all carbs for 6 months. When Xmas came, I noticed I could not taste sweets. Some sour and salty and bitter sensations but no sweet taste at all. Drinking diet cola tastes like drinking soda water. Health is otherwise good. I took some antibiotics for a bad tooth, but it was just simple augmentin. Never bothered me before. I have noticed an odd sort of half sweet taste in my mouth, tastes like I am burning ketones. Been this way for about two months. Eating is not much fun but then I know people who cannot walk so my problem is minor. Seemed to come on gradually.

What a relief - I am not alone here!
I lost my sense of taste - mainly sweet things, last November for about a week. I was a smoker at the time but had just quit so I put it down to that.

It has happened again this week, very strange sensation, I can get the gist of a flavour but something is missing if you get what I mean?
I made a curry yesterday and could only taste the hotness and not all the other wonderfull flavours. Family enjoyed it so that was ok %-)

Does anyone have any ideas what this can be? I did have a cold virus late last year and had blocked sinuses for a few weeks. I ahve just seen a doctor due to constant headaches and having read these posts, I am drawn to the conclusion that it is conected to sinus issues perhaps??

I don't take any drugs etc. and generally in good health - any thoughts??

Mine started about 5 days ago. It was sudden. I had breakfast and coffee that morning, everything was fine. That afternoon at lunch everything was awful, and has been since. Sweet tastes bitter, everything else just tastes bland and gross. There's a bittery metallic aftertaste that is horrible. I have to force myself to eat. I can't believe how many people this has happened to and how many did't get their tastes back.

i think you got issues! This sensation you have been feeling is diagnosed as AGEUSIA. This is a very dangerous disease. It can appear as though you have no taste and everything else is fine but eventually it will start dissolving you organs and KILL you!!!

Hey, its not just sweets that i cannot taste... it has been everything and it started about a week ago. I've been waiting for it to wear off for something but its not & it is getting worse. I ate an entire lemon today because it doesn't effect me & lemons have been the only thing i can eat that comes close to having some flavor. I am a healthy teenager and I don't drink, do drugs, and I am in good shape so I don't understand what could be causing this to happen. I have been told by many people that I may just have a cold or a little virus but I feel very healthy. If anyone knows a way to cure this or something to make me be able to taste again PLEASE let me know!

I very suddenly lost my sense of taste for sweet things, and stumbled across this forum while researching causes and treatements. In short, I had a cold while on antibiotics (Bactrim) for a urinary tract infection. Quite suddenly, everything sweet that I used to love (e.g. chocolate, fruits, jams, etc...) all taste like cardboard. My sense of smell is not impaired. It's been more than a week. My cold is gone. I am not zinc deficient, as I take supplements. There is no gradual improvement of the condition. At first, I was pleased for the lack of associated appetite to lose a a few lbs. Now, however, I'm getting anxious. Anyone out there who had something similar post cold? What can I do???

Mom3kids, I suspect there might indeed be a link between Bactrim and our condition (loss of taste for sweet things only). Did your situation resolve, or are you still experiencing the same?
