I have lost my taste for 5 weeks this is so hard because I can not taste sweet flavors at all. So many flavors are mixtures so almost every thing tastes off and not normal at all. I took Lamisil tablets for a toe nail fungus after three weeks on the Lamisil my taste went and I became very ill with stomach pain, nausea and terrible heartburn. I had an overpowering salty metalic taste in my mouth I was very thirsty and water tasted like seawater. I am really starting to worry about my health and of course I stopped taking the Lamisil the day my taste went. I have lost 8 pounds but not in a good way. I dream about sweet fruit! I have always been eaten a healthy diet with lots of salad fruits and veggies fish and chicken. Bread is awful and so is yogurt, cottage cheese, salad dressings and any type of mixed food (casserole) This is a rare side affect from the Lamisil and lucky me to be the 2.8% of the population to experience this!! My doctor says I should have full taste back by three months, I understand some people never get their taste back. I do so hope it comes back this is very hard to deal with. I love to cook and now it has no joy for me. I am thirsty almost all the time and water just taste awful! I drink coffee with cream and even though it does taste salty the bitter of the coffee makes it almost tollerable. How does this taste perception happen? I heard zinc could help but some say it has actually caused taste loss. Can any one help? I found I could eat cream of wheat cooked with milk, most cooked vegetables, not potatoe though, and boost hi protein shakes meat is disgusting as well as cheese. I hope everyone who has posted here has received their taste again.

Im no proffesional but this is most likely caused by crest pro health toothpaste, mouthwash, or breath freheners, these all have a minty taste to them so it is probly something giving them their minty taste that cuts off your sense of taste
Im having the same problem. from things that arent normal i first ate a lot of generic chiklet like gum later i brushed my teath with crest pro health then left some mouthwash in my mouth longer than normal
my sense of taste went away overnight i realised i could not taste anything on the front half of my tounge im not in pain or sick in any way. My tongue still has feeling and is working fine in every way it can except for its biggest job.
as you can see ive done everything you all have done and am experiencing the same problems
I would reccomend changing toothpaste to the last one that worked well for you dont chew gum, as you cant taste it well it shouldnt be hard, and try avoiding mouthwash, if you cant avoid it use scope.
I dont know anything about this condition so i have no idea how long this will last. Id give it 2-4 weeks and give an update on your situation.
If it clears up you should chew something like stride freedent orbit or 5 try avoiding generics as much as you can untill a few weeks after this completely clears up

My problem is the opposite - recently things taste too sweet. I've always had a sweet tooth, but suddenly don't want to eat things that are really sweet, and they all taste too sweet to me! I have one sugar in tea and coffee, but for the last few days they have tasted far too sweet and I've struggled to drink them. I've also noticed I'm more sensitive to smells - normally the smell of cooking bacon would make me feel famished, but earlier today it just smelt too strong. Any ideas? I can't find details for this anywhere on the web or in medical dictionary!

Same thing here. I had a teeth cleaning last week, just routine and afterwards i lost my salty and sweet taste which is the front of the tounge. I called the dentist and she said i did not get anything but water and rinse, no injecions or anything and it might be something else causing it. my smell is fine and i can taste bitter and hot spicy food. It sucks

Ah ha! I came here looking for answers to my taste issue (everything sweet tastes mostly bland).
It MUST be the Crest Pro health mouth wash (alcohol free) that I just started using!
I briefly wondered if it had anything to do with it... it has kind of a odd taste to begin with. I sort of even have a odd bland taste in my mouth after using it. Then, some one on this forum mentioned Crest Pro Health mouth wash and I knew it had to be the reason. It coincided exactly with my taste issue, which has been going on for 2 weeks now.
I'm calling Crest!

I have a similar problem. I lost my taste for sweet 8 days ago. It occurred abruptly. I too was on Lamisil but hadn't taken it for about three weeks before my taste changed. No other symptoms or recent illnesses. I rarely use artificial sweeteners and don't use Crest Pro Health toothpaste. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I started experiencing lack of taste about two weeks ago. I don't know what it could be. I don't drink a lot of diet soda, and I had one diet drink a day. I am really against eating/drinking anything that has fake ingredients. Anyway, I can just barely taste the food I eat. It is weird! I can taste chocolate just a tad...the full taste is just not there. The day I noticed was the day after I ate some insanely salted tostada chips and pinapple salsa from TJoe's. Anything that has a lot of salt burns my tongue. Plus, I was using Crest prohealth mouthwash off and on. I've always thought it had a weird taste. I just wonder if it's that...or if it's an allergic reaction to something. I know my vitamin levels have to be low. Zinc and B-12 deficiencies are some causes. I plan on getting to my doctor soon.

What kind of antibiotic did you take? I just took bactrim ds for a sinus infection and have lost my taste of sweet also. Thinking it may be a yeast infection of mouth (oral thrush) from this antibiotic.

I too have lost taste of sweets and everything else tasted bland, my ear, nose, and throat Dr. said I had a throat infection he gave me antibiotics the infection cleared up but taste did not return.I went back to the Dr. he said there was nothing else wrong. we talked about what I was eating and he noticed that I was using way to much Splenda, sugar free gum and sugar free soda.Istopped all of them ,the Dr. told me to start eating Dannon yogurt or activa, he said that the natural bacteria in yogurt would help with my taste problem.I have stop Splenda and have been taking the yogurt everyday for a week and my taste has been returning its about 85% hope this helps.

I posted several months ago... STILL have the problem. Have not used Crest Pro Health or taken any antibiotics or other medications, and I don't eat Splenda or other artificial sweeteners. I do not have a cold, nor infection. I can smell everything normally.
I've been unable to taste sugar/sweet for 10 1/2 MONTHS now. It's very frustrating. ENT said to wait it out, that there was nothing wrong with me. Went to a neurologist and got an MRI... everything normal. Blood tests (inc. B12), normal. Dentist suggested the problem is neurological based on some online research she kindly did for me, but the neurologist has me back at square one saying it's allergies.
I suspect this might have something to do with my having taken paroxetine several years ago. I know that sounds crazy, but after having a protracted withdrawal with some pretty strange symptoms, and having finally lost the weight I gained on the drug (the taste loss coincided with the weight loss -- but lack of taste changed my diet so many contributing factors) and reading about how paroxetine stores in the fat cells, maybe I'm having some weird reaction to its release back into my system.
For now, still sticking with lots of black pepper and garlicky foods, potatoes and corn to supplement my diet because they actually taste half way decent. I will try the yogurt suggestion. Thank you, previous poster. Anyone else with other tips/success stories?

A year has gone by since I wrote this, and there is still no change in my taste buds. Still can't taste anything sweeter than fruit. That's three years without chocolate or ice cream or cookies. I asked my doctor about it and she'd never heard of such a thing but thought that it could be related to the upper respiratory infection I'd had just prior to losing the taste.
Living without the taste of sweet has been a mixed experience for me. I eat healthier now and have lost 20 pounds. I used to be a sugar addict. But it's sad at the same time. I think it's kind of like losing a finger: you can continue to function, but you are constantly aware that it's missing.
Even though there are still no answers for me, I find this forum very helpful to read because everyone's experience has useful information. As a result of a couple of previous posts I am going to stop eating Altoids and start eating yogurt with probiotics, and see if there's a change in my taste. (I have been an Altoid eater for years, and it's the only candy I can eat because the mint is so strong the lack of sweetness doesn't matter.)
