Something is seriously wrong. Starting last Saturday, I poured a cup of my favorite coffee, I've had a cup every morning for 35yrs, I enjoy it very much. For the 1st time it tasted horrible, so I poured the pot out, and made a another pot... same thing, so I poured that pot out and tried a different kind of coffee, that was worse, so I dumped that out!

Frustrated, I got dress went to the nearest coffee place and bought a cup of coffee. It was 10 times worse, I thought I was going to throw-up.

I didn't know what was going on. Only to find out later that my tatse buds were shot! Nothing tasted right. The only thing I can taste is the sweet and that's distorted, sweet tastes like syrup or something, it's very very sickning and nauseating.

The bad thing is that I'm NOT a sugar eater & I don't like or eat sweets at any time! What in the world is wrong with me? Please help!

Not to make light of anyone's situation, but I really wish it would happen to me so that I can lose 30 lbs. I keep thinking that if I couldn't taste I know that I'd only eat when necessary and stop the excessive snacking. I only overeat because the foods taste so good. sigh....

Like everyone else here I have also been experiencing taste loss. But unlike everyone here it is only happening on half of my tounge. At the back of my tounge I can taste everything normally, but at the front and tip of my tounge I can't taste anything. It has lasted over a week now. I'm 26, I'm not sick, I can smell things fine, I have not been using any artificial sweeteners, I did not burn or injure it, I can still feel hot and cold with the tip and have full range of motion with it, I just can't taste anything with the tip. It is very bizarre and I hope it does not last long, but sadly it seem like no one here has any answers for this. All my food tastes bland and oily until I swallow. It is no fun.

Thank you, cfwarren3!

I have just been reading through two pages of these comments concerning taste loss, and you have been the only person to exactly describe what I am going through.

I am 26 also, and woke up today feeling completely fine. Nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, I had some toast and jam this morning with a cup of tea, and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Only an hour ago, as I was beginning my lunch did I notice that on the front half of my tongue, I couldnt taste the fruit juice I was drinking. I tried to ignore it, but couldn't. Minutes later, I was peeling an orange as an experiment, and lo and behold, I knew that the sweet taste from the front of my tongue just simply went missing.

Smelling is fine. I never use artificial sweeteners. I didn't burn it on the tea (I know what that feels like). And I can still detect temperature; and movement is perfect. When I swallow, things are cool...

What's the deal, dude? You've been through it for a week, so let's be in touch on our respective progress. I'll let your know if and when something else turns up, and if I find a diagnosis/solution.

I, too, have lost my sense of taste - everything is bland. I don't think I could tell if I were eating garlic or a banana. NOW, the rest of the story, I am on day 34 of 42 days of an IV antibiotic called cefotetan, which is infused twice daily. This is due to a strep infection in my jaw bone following bone grafts in preparation for dental implants. Does anyone have a similar experience following antibiotics.. Thanks for sharing. cs

I was searching the internet regarding this very topic and ran across these posts. I lost my sweet taste almost two years ago literally over night. I have seen three ENT and had a CTScan. All they can say is it must be a virus. I accepted it for a long time but found it started to depress me periodically. The taste of fruit, sweets, etc. are extremely bitter. I found that ACE Inhibitors can be a cause of taste perversion and I switched to a calcium channel blocker in hopes it might be the culprit. I feel a zillion times better on the new nedication so all isnt lost there, but my taste sensation is still out of whack. I have suspected it might be chewing Altoids gum, since I started that right around the same time. I have suspected Listerine might be the cause. Zicam has a class action law suit pending against it for causing taste loss in people who have used it, and I know of one woman who lost all sense of taste from Zicam spray. I have tried using different mouthwashes or no mouthwash, at all. I have tried apple cidar vinegar, zinc supplements, B-6...you name it, I've tried it. I read a couple of posts on here about Splenda. I started using Splenda about a year or so prior. I wonder if there is something to that. I still think it is either Altoids gum, a medication or mouthwash. I also noticed it is worse after drinking vodka, especially citrus inflused vodkas.

Well, it seems so many of us are having this problem, but yet, no posted solution. That worries me. I had recently had my tonsils removed 2 1/2 weeks ago, and everything I eat tastes different and bland. My favorite foods do nothing for me. My taste buds are sooo messed up! For those who have had their tonsils out..... how long does this last? Will it eventually get better?

Hi Everyone,

Last week I started getting a sore throat, with a bit of an ear ache, then like the rest of you I sufferered a loss of sweet taste.

Fortunately, my loss was temporary and I'm pretty much back to normal already. I was just checking the net to see if this was common or just me suffering another problem that the medical community knows nothing about ie. there is no pill for them to sell for this.

My best guess as to my ailment can be chalked up to a minor inner ear infection.

But, why the loss of taste?

I'm sure there are many possible causes, like nasal drip and chemical/medicine reactions and such. But the core of the problem is that the signal for taste is not reaching the brain......for whatever reason.

There is one reason that I can explain logically and it is nerve related. The nerve involved is the Chorda Tympani.

Per Wikipedia:
"The Chorda Tympani is a nerve that branches from the Facial Nerve (cranial nerve VII) inside the Facial Canal, just before the Facial Nerve exits the skull. Chorda Tympani is a branch of the Facial Nerve that serves the taste buds in the front of the tongue and carries taste messages to the brain. "

BTW, your sweet taste buds are at the front of the tongue.

As described above, the Facial Nerve passes through the Facial Canal, a very narrow tunnel through your skull. If the lining[Myelin sheath] of the Facial Nerve swells, for whatever reason, the nerve can be compressed(pinched) inside the Facial Canal and damaged.

If the swelling is severe enough, the entire cranial nerve VII can be disabled. If the nerve loss exceeds 90%, you would suffer what is called "Bells Palsy", the complete loss of function of the seventh cranial nerve.

The first sign of Bells Palsy is a "tinny" taste in the mouth followed by the loss of the ability to close your eyes completely. The taste nerve shuts down first followed by the motor nerves. Wikipedia lists all the symptoms.

This of course is a worst possible case scenerio, but if any of you progress from the funny taste to not blinking you may want to get on the net for some advice. The sooner you get anti-inflamitories, the faster you will get better.

I had Bells Palsy in May of 2000 so I'm a bit skiddish when anything like those symtoms show up. Bells is not life threatening, but a real inconvenience and of course no one knows what causes the myelin sheath to swell inside the Facial Canal, just tons of speculation.

I am guessing that my inner ear infection inflamed the Facial nerve enough to cause a bit of taste loss. But because the original damage was minor, recovery was almost overnight.

Now is where everyone will be wondering, "what would cause my nerve damage?". I remember on the BP forum someone asked if shaving his beard would have caused his Bells Palsy.

No one know for sure why the myelin sheath gets inflamed and swells, only that when it does it can compress the nerve inside the facial canal and cause damage.

BONUS:
Best advice if Bells Palsy happens:

1. Anti-infamitories can limit the damage if administered within 24-48 hours of the first onset of symptoms. (loss of blinking).

2. Anti-virals are rumored to help limit the overall damage.

3. B-12 is rumored to speed recovery.

I've been using that Crest 'Pro Health' mouthwash. My mouth always tasted odd afterwards and nothing I ate had flavor after I used it, but this effect was usually gone by the morning. Sort of a bonus, I thought, so much for midnight snacking.

I woke up this morning and my mouth tasted a little funky, just like I had freshly used that stuff.

I had blueberry pancakes for breakfast with syrup, and enjoyed absolutely no flavor from the fruit or the syrup. May as well have poured on sticky goo and been eating sponges. I seem to have a persistent metallic taste in my mouth, like blood, only I don't seem to be bleeding and there are nothing different about the appearance of my tongue. Above all, everything smells normal. I can taste bitter, like lemon, or salt.

Thinking back, I had some sort of trivial ear infection for a few days, which wasn't painful. My left ear only made extra noises when I moved my jaws, and that seems to have mostly passed, now.

After reading through the recurring comments about the artificial sweetners, I look at that mouthwash bottle and it's got several kinds. So I dumped that out. I wonder if excessive artificial sweetners can 'blow out' the sweet sense in taste buds in some fashion? Deplete neurotransmitters or gods only know what, I dunno. I'm not a doctor. All I do know is the Crest stuff was clear, and colored mouthwash always dyes my tongue, and it has some sort of longish-named chemical instead of alcohol.

Since I'm a google-holic, I suppose I can dump some other links here while I'm getting over my sudden bout of flavor-loss-induced hypochondria...

I was unable to taste ANYTHING for 9 months, my ability to smell was 100%. Medical professionals said "give it time". After 14 months my taste started to return.
I suspect that I had nerve damage from a virus. I have had cold sores since childhood and they develop randomly on my lips due to fever and sunburn.
I had developed a high fever on vacation and shortly after developed the inability to taste.
My taste has gradually returned after 14+ months without medical intervention.

My situation might be different than your. I can't taste anything for 5-6 weeks ago. My taste went from light to none. I got no answer from doctor, he said I might have brain damage or some sort. I know that can't be truth, so I went to see a Chinese doctor. I don't know how to explain this in English. The Chinese doctor said I got too much wetness in my body and the wetness is covering my stomach so I can't taste. He gave me some medicine, after a few day I was able to taste a little. I see some improvement so I go back. He then gave me more. After about 3 weeks I recovered about 50%. Then he told me I no longer need the medicine just wait for it to return. Meanwhile don't eat beef, spicy foods, fried food, and any food that's hard to digest. After 2 more weeksr my taste is about 95% back. My case may be different than your. I'm just telling my story here. Hope this can help someone.
