like every story I have read my story is very similar I haven"t had taste buds for months, I don't even want to eat anymore. everything is horrible
to eat only can taste sweet, I think that may be leaving me too. I am not all by myself didn't know there were so many people out there with the same trouble, i do hope there is a cure, or even help of some sort. but so far what I have read it doesn"t look very promising.

I had two molars prepared for crowns three weeks ago and I haven't been able to taste anything sweet since. I can taste salty and spicy, and my sense of smell is fine. I read where sometimes certain nerves can be damaged when administering a dental anesthetic, sometimes causing loss of taste. On the upswing, I've lost 5 lbs! After about 15 more, I will be more concerned. Meanwhile, it is a little depressing to be without the joy of "comfort foods". I can taste the tartness of fruits but not their natural sugars. Chocolate tastes like baker's chocolate. I'll be conferring with my dentist this week to see what her experience has been with this.

I got my teeth whitened at the mall at one of the kiosks and when I got home I used the Crest pro health mouth wash. The next day, I couldn't taste anything in the front of my tongue. I think maybe the peroxide or something overwhelmed my taste buds.

I am too not able to taste foods and the tip of my tongue is numb. It is driving me crazy as I too like to eat and I am not enjoying any types of food. Any advice or remedies or how long will this last please post. This has been a problem for about 2 weeks...I am 34 years old and no health problems.

I've also got concerns about my ability to taste food.

After reading the posts, I did a bit of an experiment with tasting vinegar (check! sour works but there's something wrong with the vinegar taste even so), salt (check! salty taste buds still working!), bitter (check! cold coffee tastes just like dreck as it always has), sugar (boo! I can taste it ... but just a bit, and with no intensity at all).

This has been running for a week, and it's pretty disturbing: I'm a regular cook for my friends, and eat at fine dining establishments at least once a week.

Most food tastes off, home-made mellow espresso tastes bitter and disgusting as if I was drinking Starbucks or something, I don't want to think about trying a good wine, I'm starting to lose weight because I can't face eating.

I don't smoke, haven't been sick in 6 months, well had a set of sniffles about 2 months ago. My sense of smell is fine, at least as far as I can tell.

I hope this doesn't go on for too long.

I had a hysterectomy Tuesday; noticed quite a bit of pain in back of mouth upon recovering consciousness. Back of mouth felt as if it was abraided. Have not been able to taste food since -- nothing tastes good -- all is bland. Anyone else have this experience following surgery? Did taste buds resume working?

I have been having the same issues with my taste buds. It's a very weird feeling! I do use a lot of Splenda and my sister has been telling me to Google artificial sweetner's for years and I am going to after I post this. I also have been taking antibiotics but I have taken them before & this has never happened? Weird!

This is so weird!! My boyfriend has been complaining of the very same thing...he can't taste anything sweet, he says everything tastes like it is diet or bitter, or that it tastes like it is burned or something. Yet he can smell just fine. His only health issues that we are aware of are: 1> he has very high blood pressure (one time we checked it at the drug store and it was 180/135 and his pulse was 105. That's stroke level I think), and 2> he had a tooth ache a couple of weeks ago caused by his wisdom teeth he never had pulled when he was a kid and the pressure in his head (probably his blood pressure...I don't know...) Anyway, he is 38 years old and still has never had a cavity in his life.

So my question is: Has anyone found out what might be causing this and do I need to try to get him to go to the doctor? We don't have insurance and so he won't go at this point, even for his blood pressure. I am worried sick and don't know what to do!! :'(

Same for me. One meal one day just didn't taste right. Beer tastes like soda water. But wine seems OK!
Ican only put it down to Beconase nasal spray. It takes about 2 weeks to work properly and I have been using it for 3-4 weeks. It is on the list of rare side effects, and the only thing different. Is anyone else using it?

So much of what I've read here is exactly what I've been experiencing for over 3 years! Over a short period of time I greatly lost my sense of smell and taste. My family doctor, an allergy doctor and an ENT doctor after every test possible are at a complete loss expect maybe it could be the result of the flu as others have suggested. I've always suspected artificial sweeteners could be the problem since I drink too much diet pop. A bad taste is always in my mouth, and like others have mentioned it really sucks.

I just started a post on this subject but after reading the full length of this post I had to comment.
I lost my sednse of taste about two weeks ago, it just went between a toasted cheese sandwich and a latte some three hours later. I was given beconase by the doctor and told I was likely com ing down with something, I have not as yet done so.
I eat the hottesst curry I could buy and drunk straight whiskey without my tongue even noticing it. I eat ice cream my teeth and gums knew it was cold, my tongue thought it was wallpaper paste as it does everything else!

I truly hope to hear of a cure for this and will follow this post avidly hoping to post some hope.

Been using Crest Pro-Health, no problem for 6 months, but now
limited taste, I kinda think is Crest Pro Health, because for awhile I would not use and taste returned. Will check with abstinence again.

I wish I knew what was causing this also. I have the tinny taste, can't taste sweets etc and so on. The feeling in my mouth reminds me of that nasty chloroseptic I used to use for sore throats years ago. Water even tastes tinny.

This has been going on for about 6 weeks. I eat organically, use all natural dental products, etc and so on.

I will be working with my chiro/homeopath next week and see if we can discover anything.

I did have a massive overgrowth of candida in my intestines but we killed that off 4 months ago and that cleared depression symptoms.

I have experienced taste loss x 4 weeks. I am also a doctor. Unfortunately this is NOT a common thing and most MD's want to chalk it up to your sense of smell even if you know it is not your sense of smell.
I read a research article from 1996 looking at 49 people with taste loss. 2/3 regained there sense of taste, the average time to recovery was 14 months (range 2-22 months). There is an article in the American Family Physician on taste loss in the year 2000---very informative---and accessible on the internet. Hope this helps and I'll say a prayer for you and MY sense of taste.....i have a feeling it will come back some day.
