I haven't been able to taste sweet for the past 6 weeks. GP suggested allergies/post-nasal drip and ENT said it must be idiopathic since I can still smell sweet. Then I have this weird sort of sweet taste in my mouth although I can't even taste straight sugar. The only way I can describe it is eating a Flintstones vitamin and the aftertaste left in your mouth. Kinda bitter like vitamins but then a hint of sweet.
Now my GP says it might be vitamin/mineral deficiencies (Iron, B-complex, E) so I started a multi-vitamin yesterday. Well today I noticed my sense of salty is also diminishing. It's really scary!!
I had blood drawn for tests and am awaiting results. ENT said this could take 6 months to a year to get better, and if it's still going on after a year to consider getting an MRI.
Aaaaaagh!!

I have the same thing...had a sore throat/virus about three weeks ago and lost the ability to taste sweets...it is really freaky. Most things taste different since there are few foods without some type of sweetener such as corn syrup. I found a new love for sesame anything and soy sauce. From all the reading I have been doing, it sounds like the Chorda Tympani is involved - basically the virus can cause nerve damage in the inner ear. Nerve damage is very long-lasting. The other nerves that send signals from the tongue can learn to compensate for the damaged nerve, but as many are reporting that can take months to a year, and I guess there are some people that never fully recover, from what I am reading.
The frustrating thing with these posts is that someone will say they have this problem and don't come back on to let us know if it ever got better.
Just letting everyone know I will report on my situation to let others know if I get better.
There are some research centers and doctors that specialize in taste disorders, I may go to them if it doesn't get better quickly.

I'm the poster from 3/18. It's coming up on 3 months for me and still no relief.
My blood tests returned normal (tested for blood sugar, iron and B12). Doc said to take multi-vitamins and eat 4-7 servings of fresh fruit and veggies every day. Pretty standard advice for anyone with or without dysgeusia...
Started seeing an acupuncturist. She said it could be a spleen chi (qi) deficiency. Seeing only miniscule improvement that comes and goes after three weekly treatments and herbs. Plan to continue 2 or 3 more visits.
Luckily, the loss of salty subsided. Overall I think my taste is dulled, but not like the sweet sense which is completely gone. Sour, bitter and salty are not as exaggerated as they used to be.
Food I've found to be most palatable: Rice, potatoes (esp. French fries), simple soy sauce dishes, tofu, unseasoned or lightly seasoned steamed veggies, eggs, pepper, beef jerky.
Iced tea and hot tea are beverages of choice when I want something more than water.
I will update if any improvements occur. But as of right now, I'm coming up on three months with no relief.

I have also lost my ability to taste anything sweet. Especially at the back of my tongue. I have an awful aftertaste-bitter/metallic-like. Can't hardly stand to eat anything sweet. This started about 2 weeks ago...maybe after I had the flu/cold bug. I will make my first trip to the doctor about it next week, but after reading all these posts with the same problem, i am becoming worried that it may be a long standing problem with no remedy in sight. Please post any results!

All the above makes sad reading. For the last 6 weeks everything I eat or drink tastes awfull. I just do not want to eat any more. Lost 5lbs in weight.I had root canal work about 2 weeks before it all started happening so the dentist will be geting a call.

it could be possible that you have over dosed on vitamin B6, that means that there is possible damage to your nervous system, causing you to lose your sense of taste and not smell, due to the cause of only some areas being effected by the nerve damage.
hope it helps
no i am not a doctor or have any training in the medical field i just did some research on your problem, most people should do the same
although, i hope it does help you

lost my sweet taste 2 days ago. maltessers, twix, chocolate cake, muffins, all taste like dry unpleasant clay. Other food not to good either, but crisps seem fine.
Have a lot of sinus problems, which were quite bad before this happened. I often have to try pop my ears like you do on a plane and wonder if i caused damage. Doctor thinks its related to sinus/ ear infection and will pass. Don't take sweetners, but eat a lot of biscuits.
Hope rest of you feel better soon

Hey everybody..
Here's the timeline of my events on how I lost my sweet taste...
Tuesday Morning: Starting to get sick... Fever, chills, massive headache in the front and rear, could only make small tiny breaths, very dizzy.
Wednesday - Friday: So sick in bed I couldn't get up.. Pounding headache
Saturday: Headache is gone, dizzyness is gone. Got some prescription drugs
Sunday Morning: All symptoms gone, but I can't taste anything sweet. Drinking any kind of soda was horribly bitter. Mouth was very dry (side effect of drugs??)
Monday: Still no sense of sweet mouth, mouth is unusually dry... Sipped water all day long to keep my mouth wet.. Like a sip of water every 5-10 minutes...
Monday Evening: Soda tasted a little better, still tasted really nasty.. I had a sugar cookie and it tasted a little sweet..
I have absolutely no nasal congestion, and no sinus infection. I was prescribed drugs to reduce coughing and an anti-biotic for an upper respiratory infection.. Those other people with URIs losing their sense of sweet, try sipping water all day long and see if that helps..
I promise I'll report back my results.

(Update on post right above this one)
6/24/09: Neck pain continues and may be getting worse, headaches continue, coughing continues, the anti-biotics I was given seem to have had no affect and I've recently passed the "last day dosage" so I don't have any more of it and I'm still sick going past 8 days now.. Prescribed cough suppressant is quickly becoming less and less effective every time I take my scheduled dosage. I've stopped taking the cough suppressant as the drowsiness and dizziness side effects are not worth the slight cough suppressing ability that it now has on me... Either my body or the sickness must have adapted to the prescription cough suppressant after only 8 days.
Lungs are feeling a little bit better, I can take a full breath and let it out quickly without coughing, but it takes a well timed intentional effort..
Everytime I cough, I still feel like the part where the base of my neck and my head meet is going to explode.. So I continue to make every effort possible to do little "grandpa style" coughes instead of one big cough..
I'm off all prescriptions now and am taking pain killers regularly..
Taste of sweet has, for now, returned to normal... False alarm for me there..

I had a sore throat, went to a concert and popped Altoids the entire evening so I wouldn't cough or clear my throat. From that day on (two months now) I have no taste on the sides of my tongue, Drinking water is unpleasant because the sides of my tongue have a strange indescribable taste. Is is possible that too many Altoids can effect taste?

After reading all the posts here I have decided to post my condition
My wife and I have had identical condition the past week.
day 1: headaches
day 2: mild headaches
day 3: mild head aches, dizzy
day 4: no symptoms
day 5: slightly raw tongue, and a slight metallic taste.
day 6: diminished sense of taste and anything that I do taste is metallic
day 7: Lost almost all sense of taste, still can smell fine
I had my symptoms exactly 1 day following hers
The only thing we have changed in our lives is:
4 days ago we opened a new tube of tooth paste
2 weeks ago we were doing some cat sitting
3 weeks ago we changed to crest pro health tooth paste ( I have now found reports of the mouth wash causing loss of taste)
6 weeks ago we moved to a new apartment
8 weeks ago we painted our new apartment
we both have a metal bar in our mouth from braces
we do not consume artificial sweeteners
We don't smoke, drink excessive, or do drugs
the only prescription drugs that my wife uses are tricyclen low (birth control pill)
I do not have any prescription drugs
I am 26, my wife is 28
I am a professional cook in a fine dinning restaurant, My wife has a desk job
We are going to stop using crest pro health immediately and go back to arm and hammer. I will keep updating with changes as they occur.
Any help would be great
And thank to all the people that have replied to their posts you were very helpful.

An update on my condition, I have ceased using crest pro health toothpaste and my mouth feels much better. I can taste sweetness again, though mild, and my wife is doing better as well. Im not saying it was the tooth paste, could of been a virus or bacteria.
On another note not related, my wife has developed brown stains on her teeth. She brushes 2x daily and uses mouth wash. I did some searching and apparently the crest pro health has this side effect as well. Even was admitted by the company at one point.
Any how, I hope this helps some people.

Having the same problem as lots of you. My taste buds went wacko 3 days ago. Nothing tastes quite right. And I also lack the ability to taste sweet. Everything tastes funny from chicken to garlic bread to ice cream. ugh... The only thing I have thought of is that I do drink about 4 quarts of decaf iced tea a day and i sweeten it with Splenda.. Have been doing this for a couple months now. So I am taking in quite a bit of artificial sweetner.. Other than that I'm great.
Too bad we seem to have the same complaints, yet nobody is finding a solution.
