hi

Im really worried  about my father because he's experiencing this also. He was coughing excessively to the point he's loosing his breath. After coughing he's always joking that maybe he'll be dead soon because of that and starting to say his goodbyes which is not really funny.  My father is a bus driver so he is exposed to smoke/pollution. He said that maybe that's the reason why he's experiencing that. Another reason is he doesn't have time to wipe his sweat on his back when he's driving.

He doesn't want to see a doctor. He said that it is just a waste of money so i really hope that all of the possible causes and infos written in this site will help us. I cant bear to loose my father, he's the only parent we have.

I have had a cough for around 4 weeks. It is not a particularly bad cough - I have had much worse - but after coughing just once I am gasping to breathe in air and have to do it a bit at a time which makes for a very scary wheezing noise. I wasn't sure whether it justified going to the doctor, after all I am not going to be able to cough on demand. But I will now because I am scared of passing out. I like the idea of it being whooping cough as that doesn't sound like a lifelong condition.

I'm having a similar issue. I have a cold and my nosed is stuffed up I've been getting minor headaches my throat hurts and I can't stop coughing and sneezing. Since my nose is stuffed up I think the reason why I can't breath when I cough is because the mucous is clogging my throat? I'm not and adult or teen I'm not going to say my exact age but is this a logical explanation? When it happens I can get very minimal air through. Also when it happens I find if I take very deep breaths with as much air as possible it goes away within 30 seconds. It's very scary what should I do? And asker please tell me if the deep breath throught ur mouth works or not. Can u get any air through? It's like I've been underwater and I'm gasping for air

this is what's been happening to me for the past month: 7-second, dry coughing fit. throat completely closes up: i can't inhale or exhale, no matter how hard i try. i feel pressure in my face (from the coughing) and no matter what i do, i can NOT breathe in OR out for about 15 seconds. the final step (which i haven't read anyone mention) is that i let out two or three loud, heavy burps. *note: it's been so bad, that about five times, i threw up (i didn't blow chunks, just a splat in the trash can). because i've been dealing with this for a month now, i now it's going to be fine, but the three minutes that it lasts are physically draining and feel awful. my co-workers and friends are all concerned, but i always dismissed it bc after it was all over, i felt fine. i finally went to the doctor, and he defaulted to asthma issues. i for upset bc i am not wheezing and after three aforementioned burp, i feel totally fine (absolutely no breathing issues what so ever). he prescribed Qvar (steroid inhaler) and prednisone. i'm sure this if not going to help (bc it hasn't thus far), but i want to follow doctor's orders before i return and ask for a referral to see a specialist. how i deal with it: i excuse myself from active around me, find a secluded corner, finish my fit, catch my breath, let out that obnoxious burp, and return to normal. knowing that it's all temporary (about three minutes tops) helps, along with relaxing (thankfully, i'm not prone to anxiety attacks; this would surely suck. reading your posts helps in that i don't feel like the only one. my advice: be proactive and assertive with your health. i'm grateful i have insurance and intend to take full advantage of that privilege. best, -c.

Pertussis....started in July 2015, around the 7th, found myself in ER on the 12th unable to breath with severe cough....im now in the 6th month and still have occasional severe coughing, but the paroxysm's are no longer part of the cough...i had the antibiotics too, and they were "too late" they only work if you get them within the active stage of the bacteria, within the first 2 weeks, but, you have no idea you have whooping cough....im just hoping this goes away really soon, as it is so annoying and has created thoughts that it may be something more than WC, heart, trachea, esophagus, etc....going to see a cardiologist first week of Jan...

I've been sick for 3 weeks with persistant coughing and exhaustion. No fever but some chills. It started as a sore throat but then went straight to my lungs. At first it was a dry cough but now I have a lot of mucus. The heavy coughing leaves me unable to breath for 10 seconds or more. It's scary! I try to relax and eventually can breath through my nose. Thankfully I don't have any nasal congestion. I had a chest xray done and am waiting for the results. The doctor suggested that I have Bronchospasm. He prescribed Prednisone to see if it helps reduce any inflammation of the bronchia. It feels more like it's in my throat though. I feel a tickle in the top of my throat, I start coughing and then can't breath.
