Hey there,

About 3-4 weeks ago I was pretty sick. I went to the doc right at the beginning and was told I had a moderate sinus infection and pharyngitis. However, about two days later my tonsils got super-inflamed and white spots showed up. I self-diagnosed and went through a 5-day course of zithromax. It's been a few weeks since, and my tonsils are still enlarged. The white spots are barely visible, but still there. The pain is pretty bad right now too. Every time I swallow.

So far, I have been gargling salt water and taking large amounts of ibuprofen. This only reduces the pain a bit though.

Is there anything else I can do to reduce the pain & swelling? Any over-the-counters that would help?

Hi:
I don't think that the self-diagnosing was a good idea. You have all of the signs of strep through (the white spots). Strep throat (infection), if not treating, will eventually damage your heart valves. That's true. Strep throat is a serious infection that can only be treated with prescribed antibiotics and yours has been looming for weeks. Please get to a doctor IMMEDIATELY to get a firm diagnosis and specific treatment. Please....Let us know how you are doing....We want to know that you are doing ok.

IF your tonsils have been enlarged for the past few weeks then you are likely still sick, and chances are that the zithromax did not work. It is understandable that you wanted to self-diagnose since you had already gone to the doctor once, but it is a good idea to see a medical professional for this sort of thing. I don't want you to feel judged because hey--we all do it at some point! All you should concentrate on now is getting better. GO see your doctor for a course of treatment and keep us posted!
