My daughter 11 and had her tonsils/adnoids out 7/31. I remember the first thing she said to me out of surgery was "Wow, I can breathe" She did fantastic. However, 10 days after surgery she was hospitalized for bleeding and ready to have a blood transfusion. (Luckily the bleeding stopped.) She has never had a bloody nose or a dry cough, nor does she have allergies or asthma. Since the surgery she has had chronic bloody noses, a persistent dry cough which cough medications do not work, and lost two octaves in her singing. The ENT finally cauterized her nose last week, but said her cough and voice is not surgery related and there is nothing he can do for us.
She did gain a little voice back after the cauterization, but no where near her level before. As of today, she was put on asthmas and allergy medication, and to continue the cough medicines. I honestly feel something happened during the intubation that irritated her vocals BUT I hope that it is allergies - and maybe the adnoids were blocking the allergents from getting down further and now allergy symptoms are the cause of it.
I was told her singing would get better since the adnoids are restricting the airways. We had no idea and were totally not expecting this.

To te guest who has flap/fold scaring. I had tonsillectomy 2 years ago. On one side, the scar formed a band that rest on my tongue all the time making me want to gag. 2 month ago, I went throght a surgery to remove the scar band. It does not seems to work this time either. It formed the flap/fold scar like you described. It still makes me gag. I also concerns about the bacteria may habor there. I did not go back to the surgeon as I don't think they can do anything better. I just gagle with salt water after each meal.

I had my tonsils taken out in Feb 2010, I am over 50. Since the operation, I have had some drainage in my throat, and this big lump feeling on the left side. When I brush my teeth, I gag until I vomit. When I went back for post op check, he said that I had excessive scar tissue buildup. When I eat, it sometimes chokes me. I do have acid reflux and have had it for many years, but don't think that caused the scar tissue, but I could be wrong. We went back to the hospital, and he cut a slice out of my scar tissue. Surgery and recovery was a lot less painful, and shorter than the tonsillectomy. However, when I went back for the post op check for that, it is coming back. It is kind of scary. He suggested that I return in two weeks to get a steroid injection in the affected area. I made my appt, but canceled it due to fear. I don't think I can get a steroid injection there because I also have heart palpitations, and once when I took the steroid pills for a respiratory infection, it made my heart feel like it was jumping out of my chest. I am interested in the person that mentioned vocal exercises, and could that really work. I wouldn't want to go back to the hospital and have the scar tissue removed and a skin graph. That sounded pretty painful. I am going to start singing the scale and see if there is any improvement. 8-|

I had my tonsills taken out in 2009 at the age of 35 and had the most horrendous experience of my life (feel over dramatic saying that but it is true). I healed well after the initial op but felt really unwell for 8 days. I woke up on day 9 post op and my throat was bleeding, i really thought I was dying.... an ambulance took me to hospital but after an hour the bleeding stopped and they said it was rare and would never happen again and sent me home with antibiotics.
I went to bed that night and at 2 am the same warm feeling of blood running down my throat....called the ambulance again but this time it seemed so much worse I filled up a 2 pint bowl with blood in 10 minutes.
I got to the hospital and the bleeding would not stop pouring out of my throat and because I swallowed so much blood I was throwing up huge blood clots, they starting giving me blood transfusions but said they could not deal with it and put me in another ambulance and sent me to the city hospital 40 minutes away (this is where I had the initial op). In the ambulanve I had a further 2 units of blood and nearly died on the way. After 8 units of blood and 2 units of plasma and another operation I pulled through.
I was so traumatised and still wake up a year later thinking my throat is bleeding. After reading these threads about not swallowing and having problems I now realise it is not me just going crazy after surgery.
I have problems when I go to bed with swallowing constantly and a feeling that I cant clear my throat. I thought it was just in my head so thanks for advice on here and I am going to return to see a ENT specialist.

Hey everyone, i have this problem too! When I was about three I went in to have my tonsils removed. i had a dumb-ass as a doctor and he messed it up, leaving me with all sorts of problems throughout my life. About every three years since then I have had to go back to a doctor and either have tubes put in or taken out. When I was 12 i had them taken out and no further problems...except for one huge one. Whenever I cry or get sick, a lump of post-op scar tissue in the back of my throat acts up, swelling up and hurting so bad. I can hardly talk or swallow. Antibiotics usually work, though I am so sick of the pain. Any suggestions?

I had my tonsils out when i was six and all through my childhood/ teens I had airway issues. The main problem was that whenever I got sick I would always get a residue cough and an uncontrollably itchy throat. The doctors said I had asthma and I was on asthma meds for years - but I never had an asthma attack or difficulty breathing. Every doctor gave me a diff puffer and nothing solved it. Eventually they said I had a "overly sensitive throat" from being a "high performance athlete" because I swam competitively. Anyways I'm now in my 20's and looking back the whole asthma thing was total BS. So make sure it actually is "asthma" or "allergies."

I have a problem after the tonsillectomy too. My tongue is not blocking my epiglottis which is having a big effect on swallowing, and breathing I've been to many doctors and they don't have any idea how to fix this problem. This is making my life miserable. I can't swallow, I struggle breathing and I can't taste or smell anymore either. Does anyone have any idea what to do?

I choke on food and have a lot of trouble breathing too which in the end couple kill me I'm sure. Do they care? don't think so. Does anyone have any ideas what to do?
