If you're on day five, your scabs will fall off soon. As far as eating anything solid...give it a few more days. I had tongue and ear pain for quite some time, but the pain will go away. Give it another 5 days, and you will see a major difference from now. Hang in there!:-)

I'm 17 andon day five of my tonsilectimy and I don't know if it's just the hydrocodone talking but I feel like things are going along nicely. I don't even remmber them putting me to sleep for the sergury and just barely remember the awkward uncomfortfortable/sedate waking up period after. I think the first thing that I said when I could talk was, "I thought they were going to give me painkillers?" So they dutifly upped the morphine and I've been home drinking a c**p load of icewater, drinking my food, writing things down to communicate, and sitting in bed with books the tv the video games, and my girlfriend to keep me company.
In day one My tounge and uvula were so swollen it was a ordeal to swallow.
Day two my mouth still felt the same and I was able to open it enough to see a white and black foam all over where my tonsils had been.
Day tree I started to feel better and I had a beer with breakfast. I took the vicodine and the nausea made me not want to eat so when it came time to take more vicodin I became even more nauseated and i trew up water. I finished the day by eating something and going to sleep, waking up, taking more vicodine, then going to sleep.
Day four I foolishly thought I was in good enough shape to have intercourse after dinking another beer. I didn't have anything happen but I ran a big risk.
Day five, and I do belive I've topped myself(in stupidity). I had three ciggarettes and three bowls of green. I still cannot feel nor see any great irritation but I don't know what tommorow will hold.

Hi all am Ahmed from egypt and i jus had my tonsils taken out and also had an adenoidectomy, i had to tell u that its not so bad after all , the pain of the p***y tonsils are much much worse to me , and i have been able to drink and eat icecreams and jelly's, and i can breathe better now and everything and its only been less than 20 hours since my OP.
the scabs are starting to get more apparent now and whiter, i dunno about when i will eventually fall off on its own, and my uvula is somewhat swollen but not much, all in all am glad i did the operation and its not a big deal, and i have to tell u guyz that everyone has a totally different reaction and experience when it comes to tonsillectomy, but eventually u will all be grateful u did it , coz i was on the verge of having a rheumatic fever and have been on very strong antibiotics for over 45 days now and nothing worked for my tonsil that i started to develop kidney pain , and i had 40% puss in my urine which didn't feel god ofcourse, so this tonsillectomy had been a life saver so far and am glad i did it , and am willing to endure the pain for a coupla more days and save myself the misery later on ...
thnx for taking time to read my experience, and wish u all good luck on yr recovery.

I had my tonsillectomy on October 7th. Day 8 post-op. Most of the major white, chunky scabs have fallen off. Started the evening of day 6th and yesterday. I did not experience any bleeding that I saw but I did have a slight taste of blood a few times. I would feel a tiny pin-prick of pain and figured out that was the sign a scab was loose. I only spit out a few of them. The rest feel off while I was eating or drinking. It feels great not having all that snot-feeling c**p in the back of my throat but wow, I have the worst sore throat ever!

During the day I am taking Tylenol for the pain and it's working very well. But nights are still hard. When I wake up for the first 4 hour medicine run my throat hurts so bad! :( I found last night that if I lay on my back it keeps my throat a bit more moist and the pain wasn't as bad when I got up at 7am. Tonight I'm going to run a humidifier to see if that helps but from what I'm reading, I'm just going to have to deal with a very sore throat for a while.

I had read many, many horror stories about this surgery and almost backed out but my experience has been good. The key is good hydration. You HAVE to drink lots of water after surgery, no matter how much it hurts or how much you don't want to drink. After the first couple of sips the pain would die down a bit but I constantly sipped on water so the pain never got too bad. I knew that hydration would help me recover faster and it has.

I'll be glad when the pain is completely gone but having all that white c**p almost gone from my throat is heaven. That was the worst for me, when the scabs formed and the white c**p got thicker. *yuck*

Soo its day 5 for me after my tonsillectomy. I´m 17 btw. Coming home from the hospital i felt great, dizzy but great. then day 2 until this morning the pain is increasing alot. i´ll wake up really early in the morning with the worst earaches only to pop a few pills and wait a few hours for it to happen again. Then after about 12 or 1 pm until I go to sleep I´m fine if I take the codeine I was prescribed. Does anyone know what the average day for scabs to fall off is? Also, what can I do about the intense morning pain?

I just had my tonsillectomy today and a UPPP at same time. I'm a 37 y/o male. Didn't really have sleep apnea prior, but on a daily basis felt like something stuck in my throat and trouble swallowing sometimes.

Even though I am a little sore I already feel great about having it done! Even breathing through my nose seems easier now! I hear the pain may be a little worse on day 2 and 3, but as of right now so glad I had it done.

The same Dr did my deviated septum a couple years back, did that great and seems like this went great as well. He used the coblation tonsillectomy method.

Don't let all the post scare you - if you talk to your Dr and you both feel it is worth it I would say go for it - glad I did!

I am 15 years old and I had my tonsils and adnoids removed on the 19th. The first 6 days were the worst days of my life. I threw up which hurt incredibly bad, I couldn't turn my head without tons of pain. I did not get any better for the first 6 days so my mom took me into the ER and they gave me fluids and morphine. It helped a little bit. On Thanksgiving, 8 days after my surgery, I woke up early in the morning from blood gushing out of my mouth and all over my bed. I had to go to the ER and get an emergy surgery where they cauterized it again. I am now on day 12 and it still hurts, especially the right side where they cauterized. If you do not have to get your tonsils out, I recomend highly not too! It was literally the worst thing of my life! When does your throat start to not hurt? I can not go a minute without being on meds for my pain.

I'm 19 years old and had my tonsils and adenoids out last Wednesday (it's late Tuesday night now). The day of the surgery I was fine, kind of dizzy but fine. My throat didn't hurt too bad for the first few days, though there were a couple nights where I was nauseous and was throwing up. The doctor did give me suppositories for that, which I originally refused to take, but had to give in after I couldn't keep anything down... They weren't bad, just awkward... They did help a lot, though. Days 5 and 6 hurt a lot, I'm thinking there's something going on with the scabs falling off or something but I don't even know. I'm really curious as to how the whole scabbing thing is going to play out, it's basically all that I'm worried about now. I was talking okay the first few days but the past day or two have been bad. I'm hoping for better tomorrow... Overall I'd say I've had a pretty good recovery, and I am definitely glad I got it done, but I am realllyyyy looking forward to the pain being gone. I'm sooo hungry but the past couple days I can barely eat. Earlier I was eating stuffing, mac n cheese, scrambled eggs, and ramen noodle soup, along with popsicles and such. But today and yesterday were bad. Even water hurts. I do think that my scabs are probably falling off and it's the new skin that is just sensitive, but I can't say for sure. I plan on being fully better in a few days but we'll see how it goes.

I am 21 years old and a voice performance major, so after years of tonsillitis, this surgery seemed like the right decision. I feel so badly that everyone has had such difficulty with their operations. I am in NYC, and my surgeon specializes as an ENT for singers. In addition to the tonsillectomy, I had a septoplasty (deviated septum operation) done at the same time. I didn't need any packing because it was only a minor deviated septum and the first day or two were difficult because breathing was hard having had my nose and throat operated on. I had the surgery on Dec 1, and it's day five now, and for me the worst part has been the reference pain associated in my ears. I was only given Tylenol with Codeine and the first day I was pretty angry about this because it didn't help much. I overdosed a little and that was a mistake. Day 2 I vomited all morning. I stopped meds until the amount I had taken balanced with the amount of time that had elapsed. Since then I've taken all normal doses until day 4. Day 4 and 5 I have been spacing out the meds and taking one pill instead of two every 4-5 hours instead of 3-4. I am doing this because the pain has not been bad at all since day 2 in my throat. My uvula is definitely still swollen and I mistook it for food being stuck in my throat. I thought it may have been food because since day two I've been eating grilled cheese sandwiches along with the normal soups, puddings, jellos and sherbet. The past two days, ice chips have become my best friend because I don't like to have to remember to drink water and apple juice every 20 minutes like my doctor recommended. Instead, I just eat ice chips all day long and this is keeping me hydrated. I guess from what everyone says the worst is yet to come, but I am keeping my spirits up and hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone who is having this surgery and I hope your recovery is as good as mine is. Just stay hydrated, and maybe try not talking. I haven't in five days, I just write everything down. Who knows if this makes a difference, but these are all the things I have done and like I said, I've been having a pretty mild recovery.

i had my tonsils out on december 3rd. that was 5 days ago. im 16 and i've never had surgery before so i was worried about the pain. when i came out of the hospital, i had slight nausea and i was very weak. I presume that's how my body reacted to it's first dose of morphine and anesthesia. the next two days i slept all the time in about 1-3 hr doses. I've been drinking lots of fluid and im sure that has helped me keep my pain as low as possible. today has actually been the worst day. i woke up at 5 am (30 mins before my scheduled dose of medicine) with immense pain. my mom made me take the meds early and ever since then i've been feeling my medicine wear off every 5 hrs. when it wears off, i have the worst pain ever. i'm hoping this will pass soon but at least i've still got 9 more days off school. good luck to everybody else, make sure you drink fluids. it really makes a difference.
