Hi,
I am a 32 yr. old male and I had a tonsillectomy and uvula reduction on Friday Dec, 5th. 2008 This is day 6 of my recovery and it has been a rough ordeal for me. The first 3 days wasnt too bad, I thought I would be lucky like some on here and have a unpleasant but ok experience...But since day 4 I have been in severe throat and ear pain.. Just as I was managing those symptoms, my uvula began making me gag as scabs began to form. I have a very sensitive and strong gag relfex, so once it started I have been gagging as I feel my uvula and strands of scab material dangling.. The gagging and vomitting motions I am sure have not helepd the healing process.
The question I have regards to the tonsillar beds that remain after the tonsillary capusle was removed... My tonsils were very large, slightly smaller than a golf ball. so I have two deep pits/holes in the back of my throat.
!. Do these close? I am afraid to eat becasue the various things i did try to eat like noodles got stuck in them.
2. Does gargling with hydrogen peroxide help with the buildup of mucus and dripping scab material?
3. Any remedies for the scabs dangling?
Good luck everyone....I'm looking forward to gettin better soon and I wish you all a speedy recovery..

Yes - more like a indentation when all is said and done. And yes, food will get stuck in them, so drink and gargle is your best and only solution for this.
Does gargling with hydrogen peroxide help with the buildup of mucus and dripping scab material?
Again, fluids of any kind (especially water) helps with the mucus buildup and the healing of your throat (scabs). They also help with keeping your scabs moist so they kinda just 'slough' off when the time is right. Chewing gum helps out with this also.
Any remedies for the scabs dangling?
Food and water. Those that you will swallow with food, you won't notice (as much).
I'm a 40 year old male who had a tonsillectomy back on the 6th of November. It seems like a life-time ago.
Read some of my post, I had it pretty rough - but it will get better.
Good luck!

My boyfriend is 22 and just had his tonsils removed Wednesday (12/10). He was fine right after surgery (joking and being his usual bratty self). By the evening he was starting to feel not so good. He slept most the night sitting straight up, but he did sleep.
Yesterday evening, he was taking his HUGE antibiotics and thought he was choking on it. Looked down his throat and his Uvula was SO big and swollen, scared me to death can only imagine how he felt. Night 2 (last night) was terrible. Snoring loudly then waking himself up by gagging and choking. He woke up around 5am and didn't go back to sleep.
This is the worst that I have EVER seen him. I was really worried when I left him this morning to go to work. He's feeling much better now, been sleeping all morning. He's eating toast and lots of serbert. Taking pain meds every 3-4 hours. Hope he gets better soon. Reading these posts have made us both at ease that he's not the only one going through all of this. It's only day 2 sounds like he has a few more weeks left of this.
Merry Christmas to him right lol.

I'm 22 and I had mine out on December 12th, first time posting here too. Been reading these topics and they've helped quite a bit. I'm thankful to say that I've yet to go back to the hospital for bleeding. The only bleeding I believe happened was on the night of the surgery, I woke up with a bit of dried blood on my lips, but nothing too much.
Compared to a lot of the horror stories I've read, I believe my recovery has been fairly easy. Not to say it hasn't been painful. I believe my surgery was one with the lasers and radio wave heat or something.
The first few days were popsicles, ice chips and water non-stop. ICE CHIPS are my savior and I HIGHLY recommend these. The stimulate the jaw when you chew 'em and it's just a great feeling. I was not aware of the complete random recovery period, I wish this would've been stressed to me! It's completely demoralizing to feel decent one day and just be in pain the next.
What also wasn't fun was the lack of sleep. The pain meds I am on, a thick yellow liquid called Hydrocodone, I think, don't knock me out as much as I'd like. I kinda' figured that I would need to sleep upright for awhile, but I wasn't expecting to not be able to sleep for a good while. Thankfully, a well rounded collection of DVDs in the DVD player throughout the night helped take the mind off the pain and provide decent small naps as I would often wake up and have to switch the DVD and take my meds. I still don't sleep well, with last night being the only night I got decent sleep. I switched to sleeping laying down on day 5, and I often find that I have brutal pain when I wake up from sleeping on my side in the throat. Last night I was scared because I woke up feeling like I had a scab caught between my gums and my cheek, which terrified me.
I've eaten soup and last night I tried baked potatos, which were okay. It takes a lot outta' me to eat much. The most solid thing I had was a Pop Tart on Day 4 and that wasn't a good idea. Took forever to eat and wasn't the "omg solid food" relief that I thought it would be.
And OH MY GOD the ear pain! The pain in the throat is moderate, it's difficult to talk, but the ear pain so far has been the most demoralizing. I knew to expect some referred ear pain, but it was absolutely brutal. A warm, wet rag tossed in the microwave does wonders to relieve the pressure. I attempted to leave the house yesterday but the pain from the ear was too much.
The jaw pain is difficult as well. I attempt to eat a banana a day to stretch the jaw open, and that's a brutal task. Speaking and enunciating clearly works the jaw. Speaking of speaking, the pain seems to come mainly from my tongue when talking.
I didn't expect to be producing this much saliva. I'm assuming that's good. I'm also belching quite a bit, I noticed within the first few days. I'm assuming that's an affect from the increased liquids intake.
I've weaned myself off my meds on day 4, I think. I still stick with them at night.
I've been playing a lot of video games, a good Legend of Zelda is epic and pretty long so that helps keep the mind off of it.
My tongue looks kinda' greenish/white and the insides of my cheeks are a bit white too. I can scrape off a small white film from my cheeks that is gooey and has the consistency of very soft putty, almost. I'm worried about thrush, but the pictures I saw online don't match what I'm looking at, so if anyone can give any advice on thrush it'd be appreciated.
Also, are the scabs supposed to look that white? Those are not the scabs I'm used to seeing. It's quite disgusting to look at.
For anyone about to have this surgery, do not assume that the many horror stories on the forums you read will be your experience! From what I've seen, it's pretty much on an individual basis. I feel lucky to not have gone through hell like many of the other people, but that's not to say that my recovery hasn't been a task. The general consensus is that days 6 - 10 are the turnaround days where it's not a random period anymore and every day should be getting better.
I wish anyone going through this the best!

All I can say is good luck to all who decide to do this surgery. it will test your maximum pain threshold and sanity. :-) I am an 18 yo female and had my tonsillectomy on 12/12 and am on day 6. I have been reading through these posts and all are very helpful. day one of my op I felt fine because I kept telling the nurse I was in pain so the anesthesioligist came back in and gave me more iv pain meds-these were the only thing that has relieved the pain since. I took the tylenol with codeine at the hospitable slightly before leaving and was throwing up 2 hours later. I told them I had a sensitive stomach before and this helped a bit. I've found I sleep a lot because of the pain meds but only in small hour chunks. in the mornings I wake up in immense pain and can't breathe. once I drink water three hours later it gets bette. as far as pain overall goes it has been the worse one days 2-3 and day 5-6 (we'll see what tomorrow holds) but my scabs are still in tact and not cutting loose. from what I've heard once those break free you hurt but then one day you wake up exponentially better. I think my uvula was swollen but I can't tell because I cannot open my mouth hardly at all. I am ready to be done! I have trouble swallowing anything-the doctor said avoid red anything because they cannot tell if you're bleeding if you dye your throat red. he also advised that cold/hot extremes work one over the other for some people. I cannot wait to get rid of the ear pain and go back to normal! I have already noticed I can breathe through my nose better and am so glad I decided to go through with this!

I had my tonsillectomy on 12/18/08. They did not take me back for surgery until 6:30 that night, so I had no pain that night what-so-ever. I woke up shaking from the anesthesia and that was about the only problem I had. I went home took my percocet, ate some ice cream, and passed out for the night.
On 12/19/08 I was in some pain, but hardly any. It was just more of a swollen feeling without much pain. I even went out that morning shopping for christmas presents. I got home and was able to eat ice cream and mashed potatoes with no problems.
On 12/20/08 I was still doing well. I started to notice that my pain killers would wear off after about 3 & 1/2 hours, but that I could still manage without them.
To cut forward I was pretty much fine until 12/23/08. My fifth day. The pain has been horrible. Some scabs have fallen off, but not many. I have not been able to eat anything as it hurts too much. Ice cream I could get down, but it just burnt too much and mashed potatoes essentially would just get stuck in the back of my throat. So, I just gave up on food for the time being. I have just been living off of water and praying that I don't get sick from the pain killers. I pretty much slept the day away. You aren't in pain when you aren't awake to feel it lol.
Right now, it is about 6 a.m. on Christmas eve and it doesn't seem like the pain has gotten much better. I was hoping to turn the corner today, but I am afraid it is not the case so far and I only have 2 percocet left. I am going to try to get back to sleep for a while longer and hope to wake up feeling better =)
Overall, it hasn't been nearly as bad as I expected, but day 4 and 5 were not much fun at all. I can say that keeping on my pain killers around the clock (setting an alarm to be woken up) and staying hydrated have really helped a lot.
I wish everyone a quick recovery.

Hi i am a 13 year old girl. I got my tonsils out on Dec. 19. This has not been a fun experience at all but i try to manage. Today (day 7) i have been feeling the worst. The pain is unbearable and excruciating. I started slightly bleeding at 9:15 pm. It finally stopped after about 15 min. I looked down my throat and on the left side almost all of the scabs are gone and on the right there are about half. Also, on the left side, were it bled, there is now a clot the size of a pea. I know it is probably normal but i am not going to sleep until i know what to do about it. Is there anything that i should be aware of or look out for? Will i cough up the clot sometime?? Please, someone help me! I am very scared and plus i'm young and want to get this c**p over with!!!!! Anyway, Merry Christmas everybody!!!!! xoxo scared teen

I don't know if I am doning this right. Anyway, in response to "Gagging" by BaltoPublcGuy, how are you doing now? I am 38 years old and today is my 7th day after my tonsilectomy. I also, had an adenoidectomy, reduction of Ovula and a Sepoplasty. (4 procedures done) I am in pain. I think part of my scab came of several hours ago because it is really huring (burning). Now the medicine effect only last 2 hours! Now I have to wait in pain for the other two hours before I tak the next dose.
So are you all done with your pain BaltoPublcGuy? Or are you still recovering from healing pain?

I had my tonsils taken out on 12/30/08, and lets just say....this is awful. I've never had surgery before so I have nothing to compare it to, but this is definatley not fun. I have my own apartment, but since my roommate went home to florida for christmas and my boyfriend didn't like the idea of sleeping in her bed (I only have a twin bed) I decided to go to my parents house for this adventure. I really thought that I would only be here for a max of a week, but tomorrow will be my one week mark and there are no signs of getting to leave. The surgery was a breeze. I was actually the most scared for that, but I would trade these days for that one day. It seems that the pain gets worse everyday...Not to mention the horrible taste in my mouth. I brush my teeth everyday and have tried everything from gum to mouthwash, but the nasty death taste will not leave. The phlegm is a completely different story. I find it more comfortable to spit it out than try to swallow, but then you run the risk of the taste. It is especially glamorous when the scabs start choking you. Do i swallow spit or sit? Is anyone else dealing with this? I am on day 7 including surgery day. When will it start getting better? Any tricks for the scabs or the bad taste?

I'm 17 and on day four of my recovery. This was also my first surgery but I wasn't really nervous for it. I did A LOT of reading before hand and sort of knew what to expect. I had mono back in September and my ENT said that as soon as I was better I had to get my tonsils taken out. I was also excited to get them out because I had tonsils stones constantly...especially after mono! The first day wasn't so bad but then my uvula got really swollen and it was hard to swallow anything. The second day was the same, by the third day my mom called my ENT because I couldn't take the lortab they prescribed to me, he also instructed that I eat a cheeseburger! I never thought being forced to eat a cheeseburger would be a bad thing. I forced it down and managed to scrape off the scab on the left side. Today I can feel the scab on the right side wanting to come off and hopefully once it does I'll start to feel better.

hi all! i'm on day 6 of recovery! i'm 16, just old enough that they said it would hurt like an adult! ughhhh!
honestly, the first day was kinda a. . . blurrr lol needless to say i was on pain meds and wasn't up for anything, i also had mono while this whole thing was going on, and still have it lol! but day 3 and 4 were probably the hardest of all. . . so far =/ they held the most pain. . . all i can say is sleep cause for me the more i tried to talk and stuff the more it hurt or was difficult and the more tears there were. . . it just sucked. . .
STAY AWAY FROM MILK! ICE CREAM! and all those kinda things. . .you end up drowning on your own spit and it's not fun.. lol on a happier note if you eat noodles you find that it is SOOOO much easier for them to come out of your nose! sorry. . gross but my friend made me laugh and then Hello noodle! lol it was bad.( tonsil and adenoids were taken out)
and drink lots and lots of water. . . seriously it's the only thing that helped me swallow.
i'm not sure about you guys but the pain i have it all just muscle, my tongue is the worse! i can barely move it which makes eating QUITE the challenge, but just recently the band of muscles around my neck are just killing me! every single thing i do it hurts! and my ears hurt, if you have ear pain use cold washcloths and put them on your ears or something cold, it really helped me. i guess hot things could help too but i liked cold.
Ok enough advice from me :D i am now on day 6 and i have the nasty, blue cheese looking scabs and they are driving me CRAZY!! i feel like i'm half swallowing them and half inhaling them every time i swallow or even breath! it's soooo gross. does anyone kno how to get rid of them faster! because this is crazy! i can barely breath!
P.S- get a humidifyer and once you've gone back to laying down flat try to avoid laying on your back, causes more snoring and air way blockage! lol
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL

im on day 6 of recovery and i feel like i want to go back to before i had this operation done.Pain is horrible and the taste is just dreadful. I suggest drinking through the side of your mouth with your head tilted only slightly to the opposite side your drinking from (ie. right side of your mouth tilt your head left and vice-versa) and as for food ice pops are boring after a box i suggest PANCAKES they go down smooth and are filling. Also they will absorb the pain meds you are on so the nausea goes away little by little. Feel better everyone

I went into surgery today and...OMG the pain and the size of my uvula is he size of my pinky...Pancakes are really good.It helps stop nausea and Keep your throat from having to much mucus...Try and sleep with an elevated head to reduce swelling and DRINK LOTS OF Liquids.Even being only 18 i know that you must.Sorbet is also very good because unlike ice cream i doest produce so much mucus. But be safe and hope we all feel better.

one thing that helped me (30 year old male with tonsils and adenoids out 7 days ago) was baby food, such as sweet potatoes, bananas, etc - in a jar. This helped me not feel so worn out and nauseated from the meds
