Im 19 and I recently got my tonsils taken out back on July 21 and the actual throat pain is pretty much gone but on the side of my tongue it feels like there is something sharp stuck back there, and my ear still hurts...is this normal? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

yes- you have alot going on. heres SOME of the stuff that i went through and you may also in the next week or so... my ears got really bad around week 2, but a few days later the pain suddenly started getting better. i did see my doctor and he said its just all that swelling and fluid around my jaw and everything that puts pressure on the ears- there was absolutely no fluid in my ears, though it felt like a horrid ear infection. i had tongue pain that kinda got better around day 10- ice is the key. they man-handle your tongue during surgery in order to keep it out of the way and be able to fit the breathing tube. there is a website- i think its called tonsillectomy survival guide- there are videos of the surgury you can watch that helps put everything in perspective as to why your tongue and ears hurt. but as for the sharp pain- i had it too. my doctor couldnt see anything- i went to two doctors actually. i was able to eat almost normally, and all of a sudden the sharp pain started getting worse. it was by my tongue a little further back than my surgery site. but i guess it was just the pulling on the tonsil during surgery, maybe it tore that connective tissue a bit (it makes sense after you actually see how the surgery is done.) DONT touch it or try to scratch at it- it makes it hurt really bad! if you cant see it then a doctor wont see it either so i would wait and see if it goes away. im on day 18 after surgery and i feel great- the sensation of eating is a little odd, when i drink it wants to come out my nose (which is also common i guess) and now my adnoids are painful when i push on them with my tongue. but other than that im good- you will be back to normal soon. for the sharp throat pain it seemed like warm tea and soup helped more than cold stuff because the side that hurt was also the ear that hurt,so the warmth felt much better than cold at that point. hope it helps- and you will be back to normal again soon!
