I have the same problem, I can drink soda out of a bottle or a can with no problem. Then when I get a fountain drink, sometimes I get sick. I was told once that people don't keep the machines clean, or they clean then with a dirty rag. Or they don't wash after they go to the bathroom, and then change the fountain bottles. Sorry to be so gross, but here is the proof.

I keep seeing people talk about aspertame. A few people in my family have an allergy to it, BUT it is not used in fountain drinks. There is another sweetener that is used. My doctor had the same problem as me and did the research. Aspertame is used in many bottled drinks, and a lot of people seem to have adverse affects from it. Just felt like I needed to say it :)

I have this exact problem. I don't drink pop very much at all, partly because everytime I have just a small drink I have sour stomach, bloat etc for at least 24 hours. I can have a monster energy drink and it doesn't effect me at all. Sure wish I knew why.

I get this but only with diet soda. It's like a bad pain in my guts and I feel dehydrated and lethargic. I usually drink regular soda but when mum goes to the shop she buys the first thing she comes across DIET LEMONADE or COLA. I keep telling her not to buy it but she never listens.

All my family say "You'll end up diabetic" but to be honest diet can cause kidney problems, Messed-Up Metabolism, obesity, cell damage, rotting teeth as they are more acidic. They don't think there's anything wrong with drinking the diet versions but its not them that feels this way. It hurts :'(

It's ginger ale that calms the stomach. Not 7 up. The ginger in the ginger ale is the ingredient you are asking about. Ginger does help with nausea. You can buy ginger root in the supermarket in the produce section, but it does not taste nearly as good as it does in soda! Without the sugar there is a big difference.
I gave up driving soda a long time ago because it is poisonous to your system. It's all bad. I do love it and once in a blue moon I will take a sip but that only makes me want it more. So I usually avoid it.
I don't think people realize how bad soda is for you. Someday I hope to see it off the market.

It's possible that this is due to the soda machines not being cleaned as often as they should be. I have a friend who became ill after she drank soda from a soda fountain. She avoids soda fountains now.

Wow, this is the exact same problems I have been having too!

I too had this problem about 10 years ago, found out the hard way that I was allergic to Coke, Diet Coke, Dr Pepper, Ginger Ale and strangely a McDonalds Milkshake so I'm not sure what can be causing the pain I suffer! Since then I have given up every fizzy pop except lemonade which seems to be fine, so I drink Sprite & 7UP but very rarely, I just stick to still drinks - mainly water now as the stomach pain/ cramps the drinks caused me was horrific! To be honest, I feel much better for it so in a way I'm glad I'm allergic to them but always good to know what was causing the suffering.

Have you found out what the root cause of this was by anychance please?

Many thanks,

Likely the stomach upset you are looking to yellow soda comes from the yellow #5 or yellow#6 dye. It is known to cause gastrointestinal issues, usually a few hours after consumption. So watch out for candies, "sports drinks", and other processed foods.

It might be diabetes or either caffeine in the soda. Check with your doctor for diabetes or ask him why your body rejects those beverages.

the ingredient is the sodium and carbon dioxide gases that make your stomach cramp and feel bloated- Anonymous

Everytime I get a fountain drink I have this issue.  It started when I was 19 and I've never been able to find out what's wrong.  The color of soda doesn't matter, diet or regular doesn't matter, fast food or nice restaurant doesn't matter.  I can drink soda out of a bottle or can with no issues, but heaven help me if I drink more than a sip or two of fountain drink.  Anyone that could help with this issue I'd love to hear from you!

I'd say it's the air in the drinks, I get an upset stomach from anything with too much air in it, but not as badly as you, so I'd guess it's something more as well. Hope you've found an answer or get well so :)

For those who are saying they get a lot of pain, where is it? If it's in the abdominal region (intestines) I get have a condition that is rare in people aged over 8, called Abdominal Migraines. I have been known to vomit, though rarely, I usually just feel nauseous (but it is a common symptom to vomit) and it is caused by different triggers for everyone. Mine are stress and/or too much air from foods (soft drink, milkshakes etc.), certain preservatives such as those used in processed meat, and worst of all, cafeine. There is medication you can take to half the number of 'migraines' you get, combined with avoiding your triggers. This medication is called Endep, which is also used as an anti-depressant, although to have that effect you need very high doses, whereas to treat migraines (of any sort) You only need a 10ml tablet each day. Speak to your doctor about the condition and search it on google if you think you have it! Hope you're well xxoo
