I would REALLY like to know more about your experience, as my son will soon be free of all polyp's in the bladder. How long after your surgeries did you notice you were pain free? Where did you have your surgery? I am concerned with our current Urologist being in such disbelief, I feel that we should be seeing a doc with hope. the problem is almost every doc we have seen behind this thinks we are exaggerating the pain or that its a mental thing. Sometimes I want to move back to Atlanta where atleast they know his pain is real bc they were there with us for the first 68 days and nights of pain. However, I really would like to see a doc that has some experience with these chronic bladder and ureter spasms. Is there a way that I can contact you?

I have had the same symptoms as you for the last 9 months. I have read about the tea tree oil also and tried it for the first time today. Amazing how fast it relieved my symptoms. I was scared to use it because it does tingle a lot when you apply it and it did feel that way at first, but only for a minute, then I started to feel relief. I applied it over 8 hours ago now and I still feel such a relief from it. I also drank 1/4 tsp. of baking soda in a full 8 oz. glass of water and I don't know if it was the combination of the two that worked for me, but I definately will be doing them both when I feel my symptoms coming on.

I get similar pain if I try to pee fast--if I "force it". Make sure you are very relaxed when you urinate and see if that helps! Took me forever to figure it out...

I'm having the same problems and it seems no one has answers. how can so many people have this problem and no one knows what it is or how to fix the problem. I too am trying to look at my everyday activities and trying to tease out possibles causes. The doctors sure don't know and I feel like an experiment.

I'm 38 and have been experiencing urethral pain for a while now. Over the years stress has led me to over masturbate. This can lead to issues. There is no pain, itching, or burning while urinating, however after I do urinate I have some spasm like pain which occurs then subsides. Any masturbation or sexual activity will cause this inflammation. I also feel pain between the scrotum and anus. Small sharp pain which may occur at the tip of the penis. All the pain i have occurs in the same spots. Unfortunately nothing has worked for me in terms of treatment. Also, I do have frequent urination at night. Friday I am going back in to the doctor to hopefully receive help. Does anyone else have this issue which has been resolved?

Like a lot of people here I am just relieved to find so many are going through the same as me.

As a teenager I went through a phase of having horrible UTIs. When I was 19 I got that awful burning feeling so I went to the doctors and got the usual antibiotics but after I'd finished the course I still felt a really bad burning in my urethra. I went back to my GP who did another urine dip-test which was negative so she sent the sample away to be "cultured" (it always makes me giggle to imagine my wee watching french films and reading classical literature when doctors say this) but that was negative too. I was still in a lot of pain and something was REALLY not right down there and I thought I would wet myself at any moment so I went back again, only to be told that I didn't have an infection and it was all in my head. She did suggest that I could go and "have a camera put up there" which I declined as my urethra was on fire with needles and I couldn't imagine anything worse than having someone mess around with my bits and I was told that they usually don't find out what the cause of these things are anyway.

I went away and questioned my own mental health, took a lot of painkillers, drank a lot, read about urinary disorders online obsessively, drank cranberry, aloe vera juice, took probiotics, drank herbal teas, bicarbonate of soda, and grinned and bared it for about 3 years. Then I moved to London where I visited the walk in centre at the Royal London hospital several times and was tested for stds, treated for UTIs, thrush, pelvic inflammatory disease and had a trans-vaginal scan, all to no avail. 1 more year went past and I was pretty depressed. I HATED sitting at my desk at work and I developed toilet anxieties because it hurt so much after every time I went. I would come home from work and go straight to bed and cry. My boyfriend at the time was a total shitbag too which didn't help.

4 years after it started, I left my job and went to university where my symptoms were less severe but still there for about another year. Then for no apparent reason they started to lessen but came back when I had a really bad yeast infection I couldn't get rid of. I was put on a 3 month thrush treatment with oral tablets and cream pessaries. I finished the treatment convinced that it hadn't worked but a couple months later I realised I had been going to the toilet normally, or as normally as you can when your urinary system is weird.

I enjoyed 5 years of blissful (almost) normal toilet going, though I've found it difficult to tell when I need to go since my first severe UTI when I was 15.

I really hoped that I'd grown out of it but 3 months ago (10 years since it started) it returned as mysteriously as it went, only now the pain is predominantly on the left of my pelvis, sometimes creeping up to my ribs on my left side and giving me a sort of numb ache in my left leg. When my bladder is full the pressure is incredibly uncomfortable and feels like my insides are going to explode. If I go before my bladder is full I often get stabbing shooting pains up my urethra after I've been. Sometimes the pain radiates to my bottom and sometimes it feels like a really severe thrush infection, especially when my period is due, burning right in the crease between my labia and aching in my hip joints. The pain gets better when I've been laying down and it's usually ok in the morning. Afternoons at work are really hard though and it's difficult to concentrate by about 4pm. Food and drink doesn't seem to make any difference. Bathing my bits in tepid salt water reduces the burning temporarily. I NEVER use soap or anything scented won there and wash all my underwear twice - once with detergent and then again without. I haven't enjoyed sex since I was 19 (I'm now 29) as it's usually uncomfortable and even if it's not the worry of the aftermath is in the back of my mind. I started swimming this week to try to ward off those little black clouds and get the blood flowing in my hips as it's easy to get tense when you're bracing yourself against the pain all the time.

I got engaged in spring and I was really looking forward to getting married and going on holiday but now I'm just dreading everything and I have no idea how long this episode will go on for.

Sorry for the HUGE essay but like lots of people here it's the first opportunity I've had to get it all out. Shame you don't get long enough with a doctor to explain the whole story. It seems as though the medical profession are not interested in us :(

I'm going to give things a go with my new GP and see if we can get to the bottom of it. I can't help feeling it's a muscular / nerve issue for me.

2 years ago i thought i had a uti. After a year of back and forth, i was finally diagnosed with urea plasma. It is an infection of the urethra. Ask your doctor to check specifically for it. After two rounds of doxycyline, i was way better. I have had 1 reoccurance and just had to take the antobiotic again. Most dr miss this diagnosis!

Urethral Syndrome

What is urethral syndrome?

When you have symptoms of a urinary tract infection but tests of your urine find very few or no bacteria, you may be diagnosed with urethral syndrome. It is also sometimes called symptomatic abacteriuria.

Women have urethral syndrome much more often than men.

How does it occur?

Usually a cause of the symptoms cannot be found. Sometimes it may happen because the urethra or genital area may be irritated by:

sexual activitysoaps, antiseptic creams, or spermicidesdyes or perfumes in toilet tissue and feminine hygiene products, such as pads, tampons, and sprays...
