After reading many pages of comments on the locked forum opposite this and these comments I have decided to post now and also in the future so everyone can know how it all works out. It has been about 24 hours since the operation so what I wanted to comment on was the procedure itself.

To begin I undressed from the waste down. The doc sprays an antiseptic on and all around my gentiles. They soak for 5 to 10 minutes and he comes back in to room to begin. With barely a warning he injects the left testicle first. A quick sting and then a dull burning reminds me of an Icy Hot patch. Clenching my hands and curling my toes makes the quick sharp sting manageable. He gives one more injection in the left side and tests for feeling. I give him the negative to pain. The tugging is uncomfortable and the pressure is annoying as he locates my vas. No pain though. It feels as though something in my abdomen is being tugged which leaves me feeling uneasy. I could feel the tug as the tube is cut. He continues to make light conversation as he cauterizes the two ends. The smell is of burnt flesh and I cringe with distaste as a stream of smoke rises from my testicle. Still no pain. He stitches up the left side and the worst for that side is clearly over. I am back to relaxing my aching lower back muscles which were tight the whole time. He moves on the the right one while making conversation about the health care bill being discussed in congress right now, "Something needs to be done...." he drones on. I feign interest and then twist my face up as he handles my right testicle. The discomfort is slightly increased but squeezing my fists, toes, and now buttocks is sufficient to stifle my groan. He injects my right testicle with the needle and the burning sensation returns all over again. The burning recedes after only ten seconds though. I miss whether he injected my right testicle a second time while my mind wandered. I was wondering if I made the right decision, because of all the post op problems that might occur. I had no real reason for concern, but couldn't help my mind from wandering. He separate my vas inside the scrotum and cut. Having made his incision he located the tube and cut......everything up to this point was considerably uncomfortable but not painful....until now. I FEEL the blade cut the tube and a white light flashes in front of my eyes while a sharp slicing pain shoots up my stomach and simultaneously another sharp pain like a hot razor blade reaches my testicle. Reflexively my legs and back arch up off the table. the gasp in my throat catches as my neck muscles contract.
"Whoa!" the exasperated doctor exclaims, his eyes going wide with surprise. "Sorry! that has never happened before!" His words are a jumble as he tries to explain himself. "I would have warned you-- I have done this a thousand times-- No one at this stage has ever--" Either he didn't finish the thought or my mind blocked his voice while I tried to recover from the shock of pain.
I lay there on the operating table wishing I was put under local anesthetics while my whole abdomen throbbed with pain. The rest was a blur as I tried to stop my body from trembling.
I tell you this...(24 hours later) to let you all know that I am NOT trying to convince you not to get this done. By all means..do it. I just had quite an experience and I knew I had to share it with you. I now have pain in my abdomen but haven't had too much pain just throbbing and aching, mostly due to the drugs and ice. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Thank you for sharing your detailed thoughts and reactions to this procedure. We need to point out that not everyone have these second thoughts or concerns.... nor the physical pain that you experienced.

Second, I must point out that the doctor would have injected the numbing drug into your scrotum... NOT your testicle on either side. Some use a topical numbing wipe, and then a stick with a needle of benzocane. However, whatever they use, it does tend to wear off, as the injection is small and the physical actions of the heart and body to the tension of this process can "wash away" the masking effect of the drug quickly.

I also had a bit of a surprise as the second incision was made, but I communicated it by stating "Some pain, light pain, DEEP Pain".... and involuntarily held my breath as they injected me with another dose. The pain faded immediately, and we continued, but they needed to instruct me to breath again, deeply and regularly. We got through it. And the post op was not particularly painful at all.

However, the deep bruising from blood loss inside, and the technicolor yellow-green of the bruising through out my scrotum was something I had not expected. Within a week, that was fading and gone by ten days.

Again, we had made the right decision, and I don't regret my choice. However, some better communication between doctor and patient is called for here. I would ask to speak frankly with the doctor about my concerns BEFORE undergoing the knife.... and if he starts to talk about National Health Care, INTERRUPT and bring the focus back to you and what's happening to you. A disstracted doctor is not acceptable, no matter how concerned HE may be about his FEE and practice.

Good luck on your post-op.
And let me assure you, wearing a supporter can help, as can Jockey Shorts for the support.
But NOT the boxer shorts. Keep the incision site dry and DON'T take a sit down bath. Keep your showers short to keep your hygene and Body Odor down, and whatever you do, Don't use alcohol wipes in place of water when cleaning your scrottum and the incission. OK? That was my big error, due to miscommunication with my doctor.

Good luck.
Keep posting.

Interesting reading Kirk's description. Mine was nearly the same in 1975. If you had yours somewhat later I would think they would have perfected it by then. I got the topical and the stick on both sides. When he got to side #2 I felt the cut and he had to do more sticks. the cutting of the tubes felt like when I was a kid cutting a piece of rope with a dull jack knife and you kind of saw away at it. I almost offered to get a pair of wire cutters from my truck for him to use. I could feel the pulling up in my abdomen too, not painful but a strange feeling.

Afterwards, my scrotum turned all black and blue as if George Foreman had used it for a punching bag, felt like it too. Then it swelled up the size of a softball and really hurt for several days. I was in bed for most of a week, having visitors, all female for some strange reason. No guys came to visit me at all. I was laid out in bed with ice packs and a pillow underneath. I couldn't stand to have even a sheet on top of the area, so everything was out there for all the visitors to see. All my wife's friends came to visit HER because I had a vasectomy. Then they felt the need to pay their respects and she brought them in to see me. Even her 14 year old sister wanted a close up look at the incisions, and my wife said go right ahead.

Makes me wonder if women get some perverse pleasure out of looking at what was done to some poor schmuck.

I need to add that I did not have any sensation of cutting of the spermatacord, it was only the initial incision that affected me. No sense of tugging... no swelling, no residual pain.

That's a bit unusual to have so many people come parading through to see the incision. Even in 1975, I would think that vasectomy would have been more common and recognised by most people. Even more odd that your wife would not have respected your privacy a bit more.

I guess it could have been an educational experience for many of them... I wonder how many men's scrotums they've got a close look at.
