Finally! I think people look at me funny when I try to describe what this feels like. It's sort of a cramp, but not a cramp, sort of a spasm, but not a spasm, sort of dizzyness, but not dizziness. It's sort of a wave of incapactiating feeling from my head down through my neck and shoulders to my arms. Only one doctor (pain specialist) out of many actually recognized what this was and called it "heavy neck".
I have done accupuncture (which is the best of all for my back, neck & shoulders), chiropractic, & 1 set of injections. Only the injections relieved my heavy neck symptoms but it only lasted about 6-8 months. I'd like to be relieved again but don't really want to go through that process again.
OY!
I have a history of neck & back problems over the years and was told that this is probably the degeneration of discs which press on the nerves.
My x-rays & MRIs show the nerves being compressed.

All that said, at the very least, I'm not alone. WELCOME TO THE HEAVY NECK CLUB!

I've beening have the same problem for years. Soft neck that give me poor posture which maybe the cause of dizzyness , headaches and sometimes eye problems. I find that when i exercise more these symptoms disappear especially exercises that strengthen the neck. Once your neck is strong enought to hold your head in a good posture the dizzyness and all symptoms seems to go away. So go exercise and build them neck muscle it sure helped me.

Hi Everyone, I have breifly read through some of your questions and answers and i must say im relieved to know im not the only person out there to suffer with dizziness!
mine has been going on for 2 years now... at one point it got so bad i had to have a doctor called out due to constant dizziness and throwing up because of it.
I'm not sure if my problem is like anyone else's, But i was told it was Labyrinthits at first, then as the dizzy spells didnt stop i was refered to ENT which nothing came up on the tests done...
Some days are worse than others but i constantly feel somewhat dizzy, which makes me feel sick alot of the time.
Also about 7 or 8 months ago it got worse being that i started to read a few lines in a book and it made me dizzy and feel sick!
So as you can imagine i now have trouble trying to read things for a long period of time (Long being about 5 - 10 mins!)

I would love to know if anyone else has the same problem, and if anything helps or helped. Its very depressing thinking i may have to live with this for the rest of my life. . . So far 2 years of living with it has been horrible!

Hey u guys, i just discover something a while ago. About the weak neck problem. In my case it is because of blood clot between my neck and my scalp. This is because I have a flat head. So, when i sleep blood will clot in my neck or my scalp. In a long term this will result in all those weak neck and dizzyness, and sometimes increase in blood preassure. So to solve this problem, try to message your scalp GENTLY. Do not looks at the computers for too long. And also get out to exercise, try cycling. And take supplements to improve your blood circulation. That's all folks.

Has anyone got an update on their condition ? I too have this problem for a month now. After 2 weeks I went to the docter and she had me get a MRI of my head and neck and ultrasound of my jugular vains. All came up negative. I guess next I will get a catscan. Maybe its a pinched nerve. The reason I think this is because the bottom of my right foot started feeling sore right around the sametime that my neck started feeling week.

I noticed that with therapy, after warming up & loosening my muscles, traction-like pulling seems to alleviate the episodes. I lie down and the therapist pulls and stretches from the base of my skull-one hand under the back of my neck and jaw. If I am sitting down, I let my arms fall to my sides and they pull and stretch upward. You could probably do this at home. Have someone help you. Sometimes for a quick fix, I'll sit and try to do it to myself but it's hard to be relaxed when you're the one doing the pulling.

here's a site for home traction

Good evening,
I have been suffering this 'head to heavy for my neck' feeling for almost a month. I was hospitalized d/t an excrutating headache and since then, this feeling will not stop. I am disoriented, confused, can't keep thoughts straight. I am also experiencing extreme shakiness in my arms and legs. If anyone has gotten a diagnosis, I would really appreciate knowing more about it. The MD's I am seeing are saying it is a form of migraine because all other tests are coming back negative. I have had an MRI, CT, Spinal Tap and I think every blood test that is out there. Prior to my hospitalization, I was a very organized, professional person and now I feel like a freak most of the time.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hi - I see many people have posted concerns about dizziness

I have had this problem for 12 years now. I have seen 34 Doctors and specialist and have not been diagnosed or given any real suggestions.
My problem has cost me my Job, My Medical Benefits, My Savings and ruined my life. No disability or compensation as well.

It started as I working doing very physical work when i was about 32 years old. Light headed dizzy, turn very pale, weak feeling. It went away then came back more often over the next few years. I was to the emergency room 5 times for it."Nothing"
Over time walking got tougher and any real physical activity brought it worse. Now it's so bad as soon as I get up I have it.

Over the past five years my neck & back have really become painful, stiff and weak. MIR's show cervical spine damage to some discs. cervical spondolosis. They say it's NOT connected to my dizziness, I disagree!

Symptoms - I get weak pale and lightheaded, I feel like I'm standing in a ROW BOAT or canoe. Not room spinning but rocking sensation. Also often feel like I'm walking in sand, sinking into the ground.
Nausea, and tipping over sensations.

Things that help a little - Walking in the swimming pool!

Have seen 8 ENT's 9 Neurologists and taken VNG EMG CT Scan, Flex X RAY, Seen many other docs and specialists. Did some blood work early on checked for diabetes and lymes disease. Thought it was Meinere's Disease but don't think so now.

12 Years Day & Night! Not losing my mind, lost it already! Please help! :(

What a number the system has done on me! I look into the eyes of so many professionals who do not care the least bit. The eyes never lie!
You don't have to love me or like me just do your job and advise me!

Interesting to see so many people have the same problems and nobody can identify what is happening.
I had my car rear ended in Aug 06. I suffered severe whiplash and have had nothing but problems since. I had some prior neck problems but was not having any issues at the time of my accident.
Since this accident, I have suffered from bouts of bronchitis, strep, shingles, vision problems, severe earaches, Vertigo and headaches, to name a few. I went for physio and chiropractic treatments for two years until Jan 08 when MPIC wouldn't cover any more treatments. This past year I was actually doing not too bad until about July, when I started having issues with my shoulder and then bouts of vertigo again. (Today, I felt really jumpy for most of the day.) My doctor ordered an MRI of my neck (which had been put off by other doctors as unnecessary) and discovered I have a herniated disc and bulging disc at C5-C7 and bone spurs. My physiotherapist also feels I have other issues going on with my C3-C5 vertebrae. Anyway, I have now been diagnosed with Myofascial Pain Syndrome (Fibromyalgia) and Barre Lieou Syndrome. When I read about the latter syndrome on the Internet, I was absolutely amazed by what I read. It described my problems to a tea. My surgeon figures that once I have had the surgery (mid February), that most of my problems should disappear. The nerves are being pinched at the moment. So I urge everyone to keep looking and insist on tests being done. I have learned so much about my problems over the last two years and am really wishful that all is corrected after my surgery.
Good luck to everyone. Hope my info helped.

Hi all

Glad to know its not just me then. Im over in the UK. I too have suffered depression in the past and have had a bad car accident. Not sure if either of these started my problems or just added to them. Basicaly ive had a bad back for ages and suffered lots of middle back pain. Seen tons of specialists and basically just learned to live with it now. I was certain that the pain was moving steadily upwards. For the past 2 years i have had the heavy neck, pain, dizziness and at one point over about a period of a month my arms buzzed like they were electric every time i went to bad. I ended up in hospital because they thought i had MS. Had MRI scan and all was normal. Few days later woke up and rolled out of bed and heard a big pop sound and all the symptoms went away. Doctor says that it sounded like a trapped nerve. Well, I get this trapped nerve for a few days every month now and after rolling round on the floor doing weird stretches, cracking my neck or seeing a physio i eventually get rid of it, only for it to come back in a few days time. Sometimes i get spasms in my face and my jaw too.

Anyway, what i wanted to say to you all is I actually hired a personal trainer for 8 months last year and for the entire time i was with him, I had no symptoms whatsoever. I am very sporty anyway but never did any weights. This guy had me doing weights to work on my core muscles and that must have helped posture or something because i was great for the entire time. I was then pregnant and the entire time i was pregnant i had no symtoms because apparently all your muscles soften. As soon as baby was born, symptoms came back. I feel like i am in pain every day now and yes people do think you are being a drama queen and i get things like 'are you ill again', 'stop complaining' but they dont know what its like if they never suffered it.

I am happy to hear other peoples suggestions.

Hi all,
well it is good to know there are others out there. My dizziness, heavy head, EXTREME fatigue started in August of 2007 and has NOT gone away. I have been to a neurologist for a MRI of the brain and neck and blood test, nothing showed up. My blood pressure, sugar levels, thyroid, ect. are all good. I am so frustrated my neuro thought it was depression and anxiety even though I told him I don't feel either of those. He also said maybe its the onset of MS. That was his diagnosis and told me to go see another physician. I have been trying to research/diagnose myself and came up with Sjogrens Syndrome. Does anyone have this or know of anyone who does ??? It sure would be nice to know what we all have. Good Luck all and God Bless !

I have been having the same problems for about 4 years. The heaviness and pain or worse at night. I've seen Chiropractors, Neurologist, ENT's and even had ear surgery. Still feeling bad. Last week I went to see a Neuromuscular Dentist. I think all of my problems are caused from TMJ disease. He told me that my jaw bone is pressing on my Eustachian tube in front of my ear also causing pressure in my ear and that the muscles behind my ear are spamming and are pinching on the nerves cutting off blood circulation to all of the nerves that run in the C1, C2, C3, C4, and T1 discs in my neck. It's an expensive treatment, but I can't take it any more.

I was also diagnosed with Addison's disease about 2 weeks ago. A common symptom is dehydration which causes severe head pain and fullness.

Hi, I also have heavy head or weak neck. I did have foggy head feeling and a ton of other stuff that got much better when I uses progesterone cream.

I was 48 when all this started (a ton of other issues) and not 1 doctor out of 6 said, Oh maybe your in perimenopause. Well i treated myself and my weak neck is left. I will say that 1/2 zantex helps take the anxiety away. I do have bone spurs in my neck, arthritis and a straight neck (no curve).

I am always supporting my head with my hands even when i sleep. Not painful just weird weak feeling in my neck. I am going to try exercise. Anyone else have a habit of supporting there head with their hands?
