I am nineteen years old and I was told a long time ago that I have scoliosis. Here recently it has been very hard for me to sit straight and I get random back pains in the middle/upper part and it feels as if I have swallowed something wrong and it is stuck there for a good 30 minutes to an hour. I get extreme headaches, my eyes are sensitive to light though but I am thinking it has something to do with this back pain. I exercise regularly as in walking and riding bikes. I am a little bit over weight which could play a role in this too. I just want some suggestions as degenerative disc disease runs in my family. (I wasn't really sure where to post this either.) Wondering whether I need to get this checked out or just live with it??? =\

I also have a feeling that I have mitro valve prolapse which also runs in my family, could that make me have back pains at all?

The spinal & heart issues that you mention need some attention from a health care professional, definitely; it's easy to avoid going to someone who can give you a diagnosis because you don't really want to know what's wrong...I have a few "issues" that I am dragging my feet on going to a Dr about (let's just say they are lower Gastro-Intestinal and leave it at that!) because first, it costs lotsa $$ to go to the Dr these days about ANYTHING! Second, one hopes that their own problem is relatively minor, instead of a big deal, with potentially bad news, or difficult treatment. We don't want to hear bad news! But if you don't go and get some objective CURRENT advice (instead of going off an old diagnosis and a family tendency) then you're probably making yourself suffer more than you need to.
However, I recommend finding a good chiropractor (D.C.) who uses very gentle methods (mine uses an "Activator", he doesn't jerk on your neck and crack every bone in your spinal column...) or an Osteopath (D.O.) who is highly regarded in your area. Don't just go to someone because they are close to your house or because they don't charge as much as the other guy who is better.
And start drinking LOTS of water--if your water at home is flouridated or chlorinated like ours is here (YUCKY) then buy bottled water without the flouride/chlorine. Perhaps start taking Omega-3 fish oil daily; but get the good stuff, not the junk you buy at the drug store. I like Carlson's with Lemon; it's in liquid form, not a pill. And it's not bad-tasting, actually--but it's good for inflammation and a whole host of other things in the body.
Another thing you may have going on is ovarian cysts. If you are overweight, if you have abdominal pains, along with back pains, you could be a candidate for polycystic ovaries...your ob/gyn can send you in for a intravaginal ultra-sound test that will tell them and you if that's what's causing your back pain. The test doesn't take but a minute, but the fun part is (NOT!) that you must go in with a full bladder to give them the best viewing. UGH! No fun. But once it's over, get out of the way, comin' thru! And pray that they have a vacant ladies' room!
Good luck and I hope you can go to someone knowledgeable; I certainly will be calling the Dr I need to this next week. Will check back to see what you found out!
Blessings to you...

Thank you so much , I wouldn't have even thought of the ovarian cysts. I will let you know as soon as I can get in to a doctor. I have a crazy work schedule for now, so it may be a while. %-)

Looking back on your original post, your swallowing/something stuck in your throat thing and the headaches, with sensitivity to light...I didn't even address that...it could be something spinal that the proper adjustments could help; but definitely, you need to take a day off and go see the Dr! (I know, you gotta work to pay the Dr, along with all the other stuff...)
One thing that really helped me back in the day when I was stressed, my body hurt, etc., was doing some Yoga or just good stretching and breathing...I know that I don't stretch enough anymore...my old bod yells at me to get off the computer and go for a walk, but it just doesn't happen like it oughta. I do clean houses for people, which is very good exercise, but it's indoors. So you are good to get outside and get your sunshine Vitamin D and good fresh air!
At least see if you can research the health care provider that can help you the most--hey, maybe they can work with you to accommodate your busy schedule...you never know!!! Good luck and God Bless!!

Hi Sonya, I think that this post is very helpful but can you clarify something for me? When yous ay that yoga was helping you out, what kind of yoga was it that you were doing? I think that would be helpful to know. Thanks!
