Hi, folks. My friend is pregnant for several months. However, it seems she has some problems with her liver. As far as I understand, she has a condition called intrahepatic cholestasis. What can you tell me about this condition during pregnancy? Thank you all for replying. This means a lot to me.

Hello to you too. Intrahepatic cholestasis during pregnancy is also known as obstetric cholestasis. It gives a serious itching during pregnancy. However, it can have serious consequences to the mother, but fetus as well. Premature labor or impaired clotting is possible for mother. Fetus complications are: stillbirth, meconium aspiration syndrome and meconium ingestion. Mother also complains on darker urine, jaundice, decreased appetite, lighter stools, fatigue, etc. If your friend really experiences these signs and symptoms, she should contact her obstetrician immediately. Although it cannot be cured, some better fetus results are achieved with ursodeoxycholic acid. Cholestyramine is also used, but with less better results. Bye!
