Started with a pressure feeling in left ear then at the end of every sentance a click noise, it also happens when I blow out of my mouth like blowing up a balloon, it's like i hear my eustation tubes unstick or something, had this for just over 2 months now, find it hard to hold a conversation sometimes as it can do the noise quite bad the more I speak. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thankyou.

Hello. The symptoms you describe could be related to Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). The Eustachian tubes are small passages connecting the middle ear to the back of the nose and the upper throat. Their primary purpose is to equalize ear pressure, ensuring it's the same on both sides of the eardrum.

Symptoms of Eustachian tube dysfunction can include:

  • Fullness or pressure in the ears
  • Clicking or popping sounds
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Reduced hearing or muffled sounds
  • Pain or discomfort in the ears

There are several potential causes or contributing factors to ETD:

  • Respiratory infections (e.g., colds, flu)
  • Allergies
  • Sinus infections
  • Rapid altitude changes (e.g., flying, diving)
  • Exposure to irritants (e.g., smoking)
  • Structural abnormalities (e.g., nasal polyps or a deviated septum)

Treatment often focuses on addressing the underlying cause. Some general measures and treatments that might be recommended include:

  • Nasal decongestants: To reduce swelling and open the Eustachian tube.

  • Nasal corticosteroids: These sprays can help reduce inflammation and treat any underlying allergies.

  • Valsalva maneuver: Pinch your nostrils shut, take a deep breath in, and then try to breathe out gently with your mouth closed and pinch your nose. This can sometimes help equalize pressure in your ears.

  • Avoid rapid altitude changes: If possible, don't go up or down quickly in elevation.

  • Treat allergies: Allergies can cause inflammation that blocks the Eustachian tubes.

  • Avoid irritants: Smoke and other irritants can aggravate ETD.

  • Warm compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear might help alleviate some symptoms.

Hope this helps.
