Hello! My mother has often problems with her fingers. They swell and become red and inflamed. She usually takes some over-the-counter pain relievers and she feels fine after a day or two. But then the same symptoms occur after two to three months. She went to see her doctor yesterday and he told her she had palindromic arthritis. What is palindromic arthritis?

Hello! Well, you have just described what palindromic arthritis is. Palindromic arthritis is also known as palindromic rheumatism. As you already said it is a condition where there are recurrent episodes of pain, swelling and stiffness of joints. The inflammation is usually consistent in the way it develops and recedes completely over a few days. It usually affects one joint at a time and it doesn't usually cause any problems between attacks but it is possible that it progresses to a more persistent form of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
