I've had a sore throat for about a week accompanied by a nasty cough, sore gums, swollen neck glands, a fever, diarhhea etc. the doc says it's a stomach virus but why would that have anything to do with my gums? will someone tell me whats going on?

Well, besides sore gums all your symptoms appoint to the stomach virus.
I had the same problems recently. There were a lot of floods in the area from where I come from this year and we still drank tap water. It must have happened that I ran into some that had some bacteria and was contaminated when all the symptoms started.
I hate these stomach viruses, they take all the energy away and you don’t feel like doing anything. I can’t eat, I have to go to the toilet all the time, I have fever, I sweat a lot, etc

Luckily, the stomach virus symptoms last only a few days. You don’t have to take any drugs because probably none of it would work. The virus/bacteria do what they have to the do and then the symptoms go away. Since it’s been five days your symptoms should have subsided by now.

If they haven’\t I would suggest you visited your doctor again.
