Whenever I have this my mum or another family member usually rubs vicks vapor rub under the shoulder blade where the pain is, not on the chest. Within a few hours or by the next morning, I cough up a lump of phlegm and the pain is gone. My mum has been doing this to us for years and it seems to work. Good luck hope you dont suffer too much and its nothing too serious.

Landed flat on my back when skateboarding (sigh) and the initial landing left me with a loss of air, which I've had before, so when this happened I was prepared to let myself relax and gain my breath back. This was cut VERY short as it was mid-day and the sun had been beaming this concrete for a while, so I had to immediately roll over and rest on my knees to regain myself. It hurt to take deep breaths for the entire day and into the next with soreness all around. I let it cozy back in as I rested up, but it seems to have made a permanent stay under my left shoulder blade and I cannot stretch my arms over my head without feeling pain in my mid-upper back (it's been 2+ weeks now). I have also been searching all over for any answers, so I'm throwing this down here with you all. :) breathing is okay now, but when I try to touch my back, I can feel my fingers pushing against my body, but am not able to feel my nails against my skin. Any idea as to what I've done to myself..? Or if I should already be getting this checked out..?

Hi, did you ever find out what was causing the pain? I have been having this problem for years, it's only getting worse. Please let me know, thankyou.

No, there is not real science behind Chiropractic treatment. Your anecdotal evidence from your personal experience is not science. Science is peer-reviewed, data-centric, and centers around reproducible experimental results.

I had similar pain just below my right shoulder blade. Deep breaths were impossible due to pain. Bending or twisting was also painful. I assumed it was a knot in the muscle. Off and on throughout that day (just two days ago) I used a heat pad to relax the muscle, and then asked my wife to really drill in on that spot. It hurt really bad, but I had her press as hard as she could, and also go in circular motions with the palms of her hands, then went back to the heat pad. Later in the day, I used a racquetball (just what I had available) and I laid on top of it with the ball directly over that spot for about 45 minutes. I also put the ball on a wall and rolled my back on it. Then after a good night's sleep the pain turned to mere soreness. I was able to breath deeply again and move and twist without issue. I assume I am on the road to full recovery, though with that hard of a knot I expect the soreness to last a while.
Hope this helps someone.

I mostly agree, but studies show that chiropractors, acupuncturists, etc. all have a success rate that suggests no actual medical cure there. Make you feel better sure, massage out pain or something. Absolutely nothing to do with disease, and the pain the OP describes can be a sympton of sleeping in a bod position, organ inflammation or lung cancer. Chiropractors are NOT medical professionals any more than the average baseball coach, anyone that pretends different is a quack.

Need to see a doctor. This can be a symptom of strained muscles, or many serious things such as organ inflammation (which might be related to tumors and cancer), or if on the left side even heart disease.

After sleeping on a thin pop up tent "mattress" I could hardly stand up, had pain in my back. My neck felt like it had gravel in it. Seemed to go away. Was sitting reading a book, lifted my head and "pow!" my neck snapped. Went to the doctor who was not an MD but a DO. He had me lie down and he put my feet together, showed me that the one leg appeared to be longer than the other. I had put my hip out of joint and caused problems above along with some numbness in my upper left back. I had the problem off and on. I learned to look at the level of my shoulders in a mirror. If my right shoulder was ever higher than my left, I knew I had the same problem. Eventually I went to a physical therapist who looked at how level my belt was as well as the level of the shoulders. He said a man's left shoulder (on a right handed man) was usually higher than the right shoulder. I had noticed that. He gave me a bunch of exercises to do and I have not had the problem since. I currently participate in a water based exercise class and have been very vigorous or energetic. I have gained a lot of muscle. I previously had flabby biceps and now they are rock hard. I recommend the exercise class, and the walking in water to everyone. I can definitely feel it when I miss a class.
