I live in a small town, so I don't have to worry about cars too much. There are roads that I avoid, however. We have a narrow road a mile behind my house with no curb, and the speed limit is 55. I would never run on it.

Me? I live in East Tennessee. Beautiful weather for running, hills in every run (whether you want them or not!)
I actually saw a guy the other day running down the median on Interstate 40... huge highway, right through the middle of town, construction everywhere, traffic mad-hour...
I was absolutely incredulous, wondering how in the world the guy ever got to the median in the first place...
... and wondering how he was ever going to get out of it!!! Seems to me that he might have had to keep running til about 2am so the traffic was calm enough for him to get out off the highway!
Go figure!
That said, there have certainly been times where I've suddenly found myself in the middle of construction, traffic, whatever, and wondered...
