Hello,

My dad, age 75 had to have open heart surgery because one of his arteries was 80% clogged. Of course, given his age and the type of the procedure we were really scared will he pull through it, but thankfully, his cardiologist and the whole team did their best. The surgery was 3 days ago and dad is still hooked up to dozen tubes and machines, but what I’ve noticed when I come to visit him is that he is really weirdly confused. It’s not that he doesn’t know who I am, but he can’t really complete a sentence or he asks about my kids and can’t remember their names… So I was wandering is this side effect of anesthetic and how long will it last?

Hi Guest,

It's VERY common to have some confusion or memory problems after any major surgery, especially open heart surgery.  It should "wear off" in a few days.

He may also still be on some medications that can cause confusion, possibly some pain relievers.

Check with the doctors about your concerns.

I wish him the best.  Hope this helps.
