I'm a 17 year old male and i had my surgery on Wednesday at around 8ish am. Coming out of the surgery wasnt that bad, i wasnt nauseous at all. I guess i was super lucky. i did make the mistake of asking for a popsicle that was like critris flavor, kinda burned but luckily i was still loopy on meds. I told the docs it hurt so they gave me some strong painkiller and drank ALOT of water, and I recommend the same while you cant feel anything. By the time i got home, i was super sleepy and passed out. This was by far the worst pain. It was like a punch to the face waking up, all i remember is ending up in the bathroom crying. so i took some painkiller and i was able to withstand the pain. This is also where i went wrong, DO NOT GET TYLENOL 3 with codeine. It is the cheap alternative but i should have just got the hydrocodone, which was prescribed. I had to take about 15ml and it took about 20 min to kick in and it only lasted about 40 mins. I was prescriped 12 ml every 6 hous so that definitely wasnt gonna work. i told my dad to go back and get the hydrocodone after not being able to sleep the first night and being at the max dose i could possibly take. I mean ig it wasnt that bad cuase i'm a night owl and i found spitting in a bottle instead of swallowing brought my pain to almost nothing, if i didnt move my mouth or anything. I actually fell asleep at 5:30am to 11 from being so tired from not sleeping the night before the surgery also.(was super nervous and had to leave at 4:30 in the morning) i also forgot to mention i didnt eat anything the whole day, i wasnt really hungry and it was just to painful and i didnt even wanna attempt it becuase i knew it wasnt gonna work to well. its now Thursday and i finally got hydrocodone and that did wonders, i didnt get my hands on it til about 2:30 pm but that stuff kicked in fast and i barley felt anything. I was able to eat a orange cream popsicle, apple sauce and a frozen juice thing. It also made me super tired so i was able to fall asleep. The shitty thing is they dont give you much hydrocodone and i hear that day 5 is bad, once you start getting scabs and bleeding. So i'm trying to stretch it as much as i can. I'm actually able to go without painkiller now. I cant drink any water or eat anything and have to spit in a bottle but its manageable and I recommend spitting. once you take your painkiller drink as much water as you can, staying hydrated is important since you wont have much food in your stomach. Some people dont go through that scab phase and i hope i dont cause i see myself recovering very quickly at this rate. I'm getting alot of drainage into my lungs so I've been clearing my throat alot, so its made my lungs a bit sore. From what i read, it seems like the older you are the worst it is. My tonsils were also gigantic. My appetite has kicked in and i'm craving MEATTT

It was the worst experience of my life and I have had many surgeries. It took exactly 11 days for the pain to subside enough for me to eat. I lost 32lbs in 11 days as I could only drink room temperature water. I also accumulated about 13hrs sleep in 11 days. I find incredibly hard to believe that some of these people think it was not too bad. I honestly believe they are trying to purposely not scare someone by shying away from the truth. It does get better, but it truly feels like an eternity. Btw, the best pain relief I had was from aleve. I know you dont want to take it due to bleeding risks but for me, I had no other choice. I ran out of pain meds on a holiday and couldn't function.

I woke up this morning and was in quite a bit of pain, i quickly jumped up and waddled to the kitchen to grab a cold water then to the bathroom and took 2 tsp of hydrocodone. I spit a very little blood. I'm alowed to take 6 tsp of hydrocodone, which would be very nice but they dont give you much so i'm making sure i'm streatching it so i have it just in case it gets worse. Tip#1 just keep spitting, it gets so much easier if you dont swallow your saliva. Tip#2 drink alot of water when you can. What i do is take my pain killer, wait for it to kick in and then tilt your head in an upward position, but not to much, and drink a whole bottle of water. NEED TO STAY HYDRATED. head slightly up makes it easier to swallow. tip#3 keep talking to a minimum. It may not hurt while on the painkiller but it will irritate it so youl feel it once it wears off. Tip#4 sleep with your mouth closed. Unless you want to wake up with the feeling of razor blades in the back of your throat, breathe through your nose.

I'm currently on day 3 of recovery and all I can say is that how you recover cannot be based off of how others have recovered. Prior to te surgery I read horror stories expecting the absolute worst, but in all honestly, Ive has strep that was more painful than this. All my doctor prescribed me was T3 for the pain, and other than that I was just told to drink/eat "cold and wet" for a good 7 days. As long as I don't talk to much and take it easy the pain is manageable. The only thing that sucks is feeling physically drained from lack of food, but that's to be expected. All I can say is that don't stress yourself out when reading all these stories on horrible recoveries... I did exactly that weeks leading up to my surgery and I really regret it. Its by no means a walk in the park, but there's no point in freaking yourself out until you experience it yourself first hand.

I'm 13 and currently in day 6 of recovery. The pain that's occurs can make you feel so terrible sometimes that it you begin comparing it to hell.
A list of post surgery pains I've had include:
Tonsil location pain (As would be expected)
Throat Pain
Ear Pain
Teeth Pain

If you get your RECOMMENDED medication when needed, you'll most likely have hours here and there where you will feel fine as long as you don't swallow (which will have to be done to consume food or water, but the pain only lasts 2 seconds). The pain comes and it goes and mornings making you wanna to curl up in a ball and cry. It easy to forget that what you are doing will all benefit you when you are done, so just remember that what you are doing is worth it.

Thought I'd share my experience im 22 year old female I had my tonsils out Wednesday afternoon so I'm now on day 4 I had cold steel with stitches, I've not had much pain tbh! Just in the morning when I first wake up as I don't wake up to take meds in the night I've been eating normal, toast, pasta, chicken dinner and not struggled and been drinking plenty of fluids also not struggled to talk so all in all I've been fine the only problems is for the first hour when I wake up but it does just feel like bad tonsillitis and ear ache but nothing unbearable and my surgeon struggled to get my left tonsil out as it was welded to my throat so anyone having the surgery it's really not as bad as people say as long as you eat NORMAL food! I had a chicken and bacon butty half an hour after surgery it really does help! And I'm normally a baby with pain! So guys it's really not that bad!

I'm a 46 yr old female on day 6 of recovery I was spiking a fever at night so my surgeon put on an antibiotic twice a day along with the pain meds every four hours and it seems to be helping with the fever but I've still got the pain in my throat, the ear ache and the what not. I can eat almost anything except bananas... they feel like I'm swallowing a razor blade that's on fire. Any advice?

I'm 18 and I'm day 7 of recovery. I was told by my doctor that is this the worst pain in the world. For me the first 5 days were a piece of cake. I ate mostly soft foods, a lot of mash potatoes and over cooked pasta! On day 5 I was able to eat cooked salmon. I am not currently taking any medication; the pain is bearable. I was also able to mostly talk on day 5, I think forcing myself to talk is actually helping. Day 6 and 7 have been the worst for me, rating them about 6/10. My friend who is older prepared me for the worst pain being day 7-10, which is nothing but true for me. I can feel my scabs falling off, it is not pleasant. When I drink a sip of water it feels like acid for about a minute but goes away pretty fast. I got a humidifier but to be honest I don't think that it's doing anything. The pain does gradually get worse over time, take your medication until you don't need it anymore. I also had a little bit of blood in my spit throughout the night, if you notice this be sure to go blend up some ice and eat it until it's gone. *go to ER if it is bright red and in large amounts*
Tips:
1. eat as much as you can on the first day because you'll probably feel like c**p the second day
2. Set alarms for your meditation
3. Ice packs on my throat helped
4. Sleep sitting up
5. DRINK LOTS OF WATER
6. Dairy makes you have more mucus but I ate it and just had to spit a lot
7. Plan to be out for at least 10 days
8. Your breath will smell disgusting
9. Get a whiteboard
10. Sleep whenever you can
11. Getting off the pain meds as soon as possible helps you recover quicker

Goodluck and don't be scared!!

I am 38 and did tonsilectomy 4 days ago. Boy , this pain is unbearable specially on day 3 and 4 so far. The first day was fine. I was released just an hour after surgery once i was up from the recovery room. I was able to drink water and ate a popsicle. However , i can not eat anything now. Even water is difficult to swallow. One Ensure nutrition shake is the only think i am able to drink . Pain medications burns when i take them and made me having trouble breathing some times. I did not go in yet as day 4 afternoon is far getting better. Hopefully this will continue. My first sugery in life but this is really painful.
