Hello! My friend had an accident yesterday. She works in a small soap factory and her colleague accidentally spilled sodium hydroxide to her legs. They took her to the hospital and she is fine now. Since I work with various chemicals as well I would like to know how to treat sodium hydroxide burn on the skin?

Hello! Sodium hydroxide can cause severe burns in skin. It is particularly dangerous to the eyes since it can lead to severe eye damage. The severity of such burns may not be apparent until 24 to 48 hours after exposure. It is very important to brush any solid material from clothes and skin and flush the exposed areas with water for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Flush exposed or irritated eyes with plain water or saline for at least 30 minutes.
