Remove all dairy and any wheat, barley or rye products from your child’s diet. Stick with lots of fruits and vegetables, little red meat, lots of poultry and fish. Read the labels of any processed foods you buy! If you can go organic, the better.
If your child has been diagnosed with autism, you are dealing with a lot - a lot of questions and maybe a lot of frustrations. There are a number of diets that seem to help kids with autism - they are primarily the gluten and casein free diets.
Some preparation is required- it is not necessarily very easy to get gluten or casein-free foods everywhere - you will have to learn to read labels! Better than scanning all the labels is to cook from scratch as often as possible.
But first, you have to know what the casein free foods are and which ones are the gluten free foods. It would be lovely if you could always believe the advertising - but you can’t.
Dairy foods will contain casein. But, casein is also added to a number of other processed foods - this is where label reading is handy!
The “cues” that something contains casein may be the terms milk proteins, milk solids, caseinates, fortified proteins, and curd.
Any commercially baked product - or any product containing wheat, barley or rye will contain gluten.
Gluten-free foods and grains include buckwheat, corn, potato or potato flour, rice or rice flour, arrowroot and soy. There are gluten-free bakeries—but they must be dedicated in the sense that no gluten-containing products are baked in the same facility or the gluten-free areas can become contaminated. This is also the concern with oats - if you can find pure oats (organic again, is your best bet), then that is a gluten-free food.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are gluten and casein free. Meat and fish is also gluten and casein free. If you can go organic, all the better - because an environmental factor such as sensitivity to pesticies in autism is possible and quite likely, probable.
