Wear whatever kind you want. Find what's comfortable for yourself. My friend loves boy shorts, I love thongs, and another one of my friends only wears granny panties (lol). Nothing wrong with granny panties but yes we do call her grandmal sometimes (not bulling just friendly picking). I suggest going to a store where you can get some cheap and buy separates like walmart, kmart, etc and get different kinds to try what you like but not have to get a huge pack you know.
Probably cycling forums would give a specialised perspective. Many think that proper bike shorts need no underwear, and indeed ought to be worn without. Some do prefer some sort of underwear, but it must be comfortable; preferably cotton. The chafing with cycling is a particular issue.
