I am 52 years old and recently I started experiencing pressure and pain in my upper abdomen. Even though I know I should, I am afraid to go to the doctor. My friend told me that this is probably a case of gallstones. What do you think?

I can not tell you if you have gallstones or not without examining you first. Only your doctor can do that so I advise you to visit him to see what is going on with you. I will give you some basic information about gallstones. The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped pouch situated under the liver in the upper right part of the abdomen. It stores bile, a liquid produced by the liver, and then releases it into the intestine to help digestion. Gallstones can cause upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, heartburn and back pain. Along with pain, one can have yellowing of the eyes, jaundice. Also, inflammation of the pancreas, called pancreatitis is possible. Pain usually occurs in the upper right side of the abdomen and radiates to upper right side of the back. It begins one to three hours after a meal and persists for several hours. It can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Without further complicating your condition, I advise you to go to your doctor because every condition is better treated when it is discovered early.
