A neuroma is the process of severed nerves attempting to heal or protect themselves. The nerves will grow tissue which usually form a round or egg shaped mass.Neuromas can range from small to large. If the neuroma is not causing you pain then leave it alone because you will be saving yourself a great deal of unnecessary trouble if you simply leave it alone.Neuromas are not usually painful but can cause pain in some patients.I had one in my stump (above knee amputee) as large as a golf ball.I was having occasional bouts of severe pain in the area of the neuroma which was located at the bottom rear of my stump.I had a surgery to remove it but the pain remained. If you are having bad pain in the area of the neuroma then you can have a short acting injection (nerve block) of lidocaine or some other pain blocker to rule out or confirm that it is the neuroma causing the pain.Neuroma pain sometimes comes and goes so it is very important that you are in a good deal of pain during the procedure. This will insure definitive results.Neuromas can be resected of a less invasive temporary steroid injection at the neuroma site can be given but has only a 50/50 chance of sucess. My suggestion to you is that if you are not having pain or are having some pain but its not major then try to manage without surgery.
