My 28-month-old daughter was recently prescribed Singulair granuals for her allergy-induced asthma. The instructions say that Singulair can be given with applesauce, carrots, rice or ice cream. My problem is that my daughter gets her food through a feeding tube; she takes nothing by mouth. I tried mixing the Singulair with the applesauce, but it clogged the feeding tube. I know the same will result with the carrots, rice, and ice cream. My pharmacist contacted Merck (manufacturer of Singulair), and Merck says they cannot provide any assurances that Singulair will work with any other types of food, and have not studied administering Singulair through a feeding tube. Recently I have had success using yogurt (I get the organic type that separates - I pour out the liquid that rises to the top), but I don't know if the Singulair is still effective. Any ideas?

You should talk to your child’s doctor about yogurt and Singulair. I don’t know about Singulair but certain drugs are not supposed to be taken with dairy products.
I am aware that an antibiotic like tetracycline is not supposed to be taken with diary products because they may decrease its effectiveness.
I was also reading that people who have problems with sinusitis should cut back on diary because it is believed that milk causes more mucus and that cutting down on milk would help with sinusitis symptoms.
I know this has nothing to do with your situation but it seems that diary products may have an impact and therefore you should have it checked with a doc.
If this is the only way to give your child the medicine, you may consult a doc if you need to change a dose if taken with yogurt but don’t do anything on your own, without consulting a doc.

my daughter has a feeding tube but we only use it for water bolus'. she was also prescribed sigulair granuals. What we do is dissolve it in about 8 ml of water and push it through the tube via syringe and extension. If you do this though be sure to flush the tube with plenty of water because the granuals may cause some complications.
