I'm on day 5 post op. This was a piece of cake. At the very worst when I wasnt taking my meds the pain was an 8. Otherwise this has been a cakewalk.

I am 4 days post op if you include the day of surgery and my pain is on and off. My main advice is drink plenty of fluids, find out what you are comfortable eating and stick with that :-), don't talk too much even if you can talk without pain, and stick to your pill schedule. Today, I had the worst pain since my surgery because I lost track of time and didn't take my pain medication on schedule. I have found that I do better with taking the medication about thirty minutes before my scheduled time so that I don't get any break through pain. The medication that my physician gave me has made me very comfortable so I often forget about the pain until it sneaks up on me. I spent the first couple of days trying multiple different diets and finding out what I was comfortable eating. I have found my saving grace to be scrambled eggs, and warm tea. Tried oatmeal, potatoes, and noodles but all of that is just to rough for me right now. Maybe in the next few days that will change. I can talk freely but normally pay the prive if I push myself too hard. I work with a group of physicians and the ain thing thay told me is to not push so hard or I will regret it. Day 1 and 2 were fairly easy for me and I did a lot of talking and moving around. I woke up Day 3 with that same attitude and got a rude awakening! My wounds had started to dry and scab off, so my excessive talking caused an excessive amount of pain. Learned that lesson fairly quick.

Well I look forward to reading more posts and getting back to a normal life!

i'm on day four post tonsillectomy.  i was definitely preparing for the worst, given what i'd heard from friends who have had the procedure done within the past two years or so. plus what  iread online. figures people only go online to complain when something is wrong.  or there are a lot of big babies out there :)  if you've been suffering from tonsillitis, the pain from this is a bit worse, but i can already breathe through my nose while laying down, something i have not been able to do in a VERY long time. .ive been drinking a lot of water, and green tea with pomgranate is mild, but tasty enough to be great to drink, vitamin water and powerade was a bit too citrusy for my liking, ive been eating unsweetened apple sauce and just had some ramne noodles. im getting some appetite back, but i know eating isnt worth potentially knocking off scabs.

Ok...my husband is elderly--68, and couldn't get his tonsils to stop hurting for a very long time. Doctors threw 4 different antibiotics at him over a 6 week period.  Nothing helped. He finally went to a ear/nose/throat specialist who said it looked like he might have a tumor back there.

It resulted in a tonsillectomy and a piece of his tongue taken.  (So obviously we're talking a more serious condition than just a stubborn infection)  But I'm posting here for the post-op recuperation, not the long-term treatment for cancer.

So...he had some serious pain after the initial surgery anethisia and pain med wore off.  But it was being managed and he was eating soft foods like mashed potatoes and yogurt etc.  Here we are on day 5 and he's having terrible pain--just hearing him describe it, and seeing that he can barely eat now, I'm quite worried that he possibly has an infection too.  However, with all the antibiotics that he's already been on previous to the operation, I'm worried that giving him antibiotics now may not be affective.  Still, we will address this tomorrow with the doctor he's seeing.  I pray he'll take it serious. Personally, I think my man needs to be put back in the hospital and put on IVs.  He's been pushing the water, but soon he'll be malnurished.

Hello, Im on day five and definitely the worst pain yet. Setting an alarm every hour and rehydrating was a really great idea. Sonic ice has been my best friend. I also saw that someone mentioned drinking warm liquids for the first few days and must say I was told to stay as far away as possible because the warmth inhibits the scabs and weakens them. Stick to cold drinks!

I was told to have ice cream if the pain got to much as she cold would help deaden the pain.

I am a 24 year old who is on Day 14 of recovery after both a tonsillectomy and having my deviated septum fixed. I have to admit, I read this forum prior to getting my tonsils out and I was terrified to the core. But really, my experience was not as bad as everyone made it out to be. It wasn't as bad as tonsillitis for sure, because at least you can swallow without the tonsils forcing your drink into your nose. Yes aching, ear-aches and stinging (once the scabs start coming off) occur. But with the pain killers they give you, you'll be fine. I switched to basic advil on day 7. Haven't taken it for throat pain in about 3 days now. I'd suggest taking probiotics to help with digestion as antibiotics and painkillers make things difficult. I started eating some solid foods on day 2 because I read that it speeds up recovery and in my experience that's true- I didn't have any bleeding... just chew as much as possible. Avoided acidic foods of course. Psychologically, by day 9 it gets tough because you feel extra isolated. Distract yourself with shows, books and positive thoughts because you're going to feel great once it's over. Best of luck to all.

I'm 24. This is day 4 post op. I haven't been able to eat anything, not even soft foods like applesauce or baby food. It just gets stuck at the back of my tongue. I wish they would have warned me about the severe tongue pain. I think it's just as bad as the throat pain, sometimes worse. Yesterday was the worst day so far.

Hi, my name is Flo and I m 39yrs old and I had my surgery 4 days ago. Everything went well until I woke up with fever and chills on day 3 post-op. I end up going to ER only to return home with clindmycin 300mg every 6hrs. I was really scared when they ve told me that I had symptoms of septicemia. No more fever now, the pain has always been tolerable and my worst fears were in fact the anesthesia and bleeding. My throat looks disgusting :( coated with white/ green scab and some black spots ...ugh. I still take pain meds every 4-6 hrs as needed. I really concerned about the infection.

Hi
I had my tonsillectomy on Monday, after surgery I had to stay over for the night in hospital. Since then I have been using painkillers every 3 hours. Today is day 4 after surgery and my throat is killing me. I'm still taking painkillers and a mouthwash to help anti-septic the wounds and anti-bacterial. When I sleep it's fine but then I'll wake up with terrible 8/10 pain and dryness my ears are even burning. I hope this pass quickly I'm hating it at this moment!!!

Hi, my name is Hannah I'm an 18 year old female. Post op day 5.
Today I woke up with a terrible terrible smell in the back of my throat. I am spitting alot, because I can't get anything down my throat without terrible pain. I got out of bed and had gotten some apple juice to take my meds and literally starting crying due to the burning, raw pain. Yesterday I woke up feeling pretty good, spent the afternoon in bed and was able to eat a few things. I overdid it last night and talked more than I should have. The past few days since the procedure have been bearable. My biggest complaint is the smell. Oh my gosh it's terrible. Yesterday being the 1st day I did not brush my teeth I am going to force myself to do it today. I am taking my pain pills and antibiotics every 4 hours like clock work. Mostly drinking apple juice. I was able to drink some Dr pepper yesterday. The ear pain has been terrible. It's just a constant, low pain 24/7. My scabs feel like they are big, and what I can see of them, they are turning a grey yellowish color. (Can't open my mouth but so much because of the pain.) I am so ready for this to be over. Today was the 1st day I actually cried from the pain. Not sure what else to try at this point. I'm sleeping fine at night time, I take my pain meds , antibiotic and half a Xanax tab to put me to sleep. Everyone keeps saying water helps? I have only tried water once, but may try it again today. I am worried about dehydration. Literally everythung is uncomfortable to put down my throat. I am not sure what to do at this point. Need advice, please help?
