I read an article once about photography. It stated that alcohol increased the likelihood of red-eye in photo's and we should try to take photos before people started drinking. Does anyone know if this is true and if so, why would it be the case?

I have noticed something similar. Most of our pictures (I mean my friends and mine) are full of people with red eyes. We all look like bunnies. The good thing is that nowadays you can choose an option red eye reduction so it isn’t that terrible like it used to be. When I look at our older pictures I get scared sometimes. I have noticed that usually everybody gets red eyes after few glasses so I think that you are right when you think the same thing.
And I remember that my ex-boyfriend had red eyes after just one beer so maybe this is something that affects one type of people and the others don’t. So try to take pictures earlier or just use reduce red eye button.
