So, I'm not a freak!  Yay!

Been allergic all my life.  I can eat eggs but other chicken byproducts are avoided.  Last night I tried a chicken taco and was able to handle it so I am going to cautiously move forward, slowly re-introducing chicken into my diet.

Glad to hear I am not alone.

Unfortunately, there is a such thing as a chicken allergy. Ever since childhood, teriyaki chicken gave me chest tightness and made me feel sick. Recently, I got a skin test and boy was I allergic to chicken!!! I can eat some chicken dishes without incident, but others give me symptoms.

I think that the seriousness depends on the person, so hopefully your girlfriend knows her limits. Maybe talk to her about her allergy?

Good luck! : )

The earlier comment about ordering from a restaurant is very accurate but not even half the problem.  Go to the grocery store and look at things like lunch meats, hot dogs, soups, etc, etc.  Even frozen pizzas now use pepperoni and sausage with chicken and turkey.  I have started by vegetarian and vegan items and adding the meat of my choice when I need to make something quick.

I have a chicken allergy but it isn't limited to just chicken.  I have the same if not worse symptoms when I eat turkey.  I've had grouse before and had similar reactions but it was cooked in the same area, method, and time as chicken was cooked so it may have been cross contamination.  I am able to eat eggs with no issues.

My symptoms:

intense heartburn, swelling of breathing passages (not severe enough to stop my ability to breathe), fever, headache, itchy eyes, hives (sometimes)

I avoid anything poultry.  That makes it difficult at potlucks and parties when things are made with "mystery" ingredients like chili, sausage, hot dogs, meatballs, pork dishes, lasagna, pastas.  It's often difficult to tell what is pork vs. chicken in a casserole.  Your girlfriend probably has these things in mind when she is picking up food items at a party.

My wife is allergic to soy which is in many other things.  When we were dating she appreciated (and still appreciates) when I found things she could eat or asked what ingredients to certain things were.  She often reminds me when I am eating soup that there is a good chance it was made with chicken broth.  Probably the best thing you can do for her is to be understanding of her allergy and help her not become the "center of attention" at parties when people find out about her allergy.  As a person with this allergy (chicken), I don't like people to feel like they need to go out of their way to make something special because they just found out.  I much more prefer that they don't really find out when a majority of the dishes are made from chicken.  I also like to avoid the extra attention it draws in.  From talking to my wife (again, when we were dating) she felt the same way.  If you can find a way to identify chicken dishes "discretely" so that she'll know which ones not to eat, that would probably help her the most.

I've never heard of a cure, however, I have found that a bit of alcohol (beer/wine, etc.) seems to minimize the affect of the allergy ;-)

I have been intolerant to poultry for about 6 years.  I tried eating all natural/organic/free range chicken, but I had the same symptoms with all.  I was one of those people that thought it was the steroids or grain the chickens were fed.  It is not.  Then noticed I had the symptoms with turkey, then more mild symptoms with chicken broth.  I did get nuggets from Wendy's once with no symptoms.  Figure it's because it is highly processed and maybe not even chicken?  Haven't had any poultry (by choice) for 5 years now.

When it first started I couldn't find anything online about it.  Now there seems to be more people coming out with this.  Food allergies/intolerance in general is affecting more people.  I did read something about a year ago that said it could have to do with the person's body not having a certain enzyme that breaks down lean meat.  Haven't found the article since.  Also heard that someone else became intolerant after starting a certain medication.  I have not been on any medication.

I asked the Dr. about it and asked if I should get tested for a poultry allergy.  She said, "So, if you get tested and you are postively allergic, what happens? You don't eat chicken.  And if you aren't tested positive, but have the same reaction, then what happens?  You still don't eat chicken.  Don't waste your time.  Just don't eat chicken."  Gee, thanks lady.

I can eat eggs and sometimes a little bit of chicken broth.  I can eat items in the same dish as chicken, but not the chicken and have no symptoms.  (example, in chicken gnocci soup, I had a few pieces of the gnocci and did not get sick, just can't digest the poultry meat I guess.)  Even a bite of poultry with disrupt my digestive system in some form.

People question me all the time when it comes up.  Even my mom, because she fed me chicken all the time as a kid so she doesn't get why it would just start up all of sudden.  I feel bad when people invite us for dinner and serve chicken.  I don't want to be rude by not eating their food without an explanation so I tell them and it seems they kind of don't get it or question it.  Most people just feel bad and I don't want them to.  It is such a bizarre thing, I wouldn't expect people to accomodate me.

I hope someone will help us figure it out!

I am extremely allergic to all forms of chicken and turkey. Though I can eat eggs without any problems. When I ingest chicken meat, I have full respiratory distress. Tightness, wheezing etc... My face swells up and I look like a beat up chipmunk. I also get hives. As soon as I start getting symptoms, I have to bust out the benedryl juice box, inhaler and prepare for an utterly miserable night. If I don't get on the benedryl then it's off to the hospital. I can't even be around when someone is cooking chicken on the stove... if it's baked, I can generally be ok to be in the same house. I also get a rash if I touch it.I've had it ever since I was little and the allergy has gotten worse and worse as I've gotten older. So going out is really nerve wracking.. even ordering beef dishes, there is a chance of having chicken broth or fat in the recipe. Going to the store, I have to read labels like crazy. What is funny is that I make a killer turkey every year. I just wear latex gloves while preparing it! HAHAHAHA!!! Nice to know I'm not alone.

I'm allergic to chicken too! I've had sinus problems most of my life, stuffy nose and head, blinding migraine-type sinus headaches, etc. Turns out it's from chicken. I stopped eating it, and I haven't had any problems since. The way I found out is because I looked at a book, "Eating Right for Your Blood Type," and the number-one food listed to avoid under my blood type (AB-Negative) is chicken! I start with a scratchy throat almost immediately, and then a full-blown sore throat, sometimes for two days, and then the congestion starts moving up into my head. It's almost like a cold that I get. It can last from two or three days up to two weeks. It's misery. Look out for "hidden chicken"! Sometimes they make pepperoni for pizzas out of chicken! I learned the hard way.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU EAT BBQ'D CHICKEN? MINE GETS STUCK IN MY THROAT AND I HAVE TO USE MY FINGER TO GAG AND BRING IT UP AND OUT. I AM ALLERGIC TO TOO MUCH ACID AT ONE TIME AND SOMETIMES I REALIZE I HAVE EATEN ONE OR TWO ACIDY THINGS (FRUITS, TEA) AND THAT WILL BE THE CAUSE. SOMETIMES I TASTE A SPICE ON THE CHICKEN WHICH WILL LOCK MY THROAT AND I HAVE TO BRING IT BACK UP OR GAG TO DEATH. SEEMS TO BE GETTING A LITTLE WORST THE OLDER I GET. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS GAGGING PROBLEM?

I am allergic to chicken too among other things... many doctors look at me like I am crazy or making it up and only one allergy test (the one where they draw blood) was able to determine it. Some doctors call it sensitivity rather than allergy, but it's pretty damn serious sensitivity if it causes asthma... My chicken allergy surfaced some time after I had MMR vaccine in 1995-1996 among other autoimmune issues. I've tried numerous things over the years and eventually just avoided chicken and other irritants all together until I became allergic to salt they spray in the winter to melt snow, and the cold itself... Then I started noticing that when I travel to tropical countries with a different (warmer) climate, my allergies magically disappear like I could eat chicken as soon as I get off the plane, or drink orange juice without any issues (normally can't even smell someone peeling an orange around me).

I'm also allergic to chicken, if she is she should avoid the whole family cornish hen, seafowl, pheasant, and quail in all it forms, that includes eggs. Some are allergic to all birds thankfully I'm not. I replace chicken with turkey, not the same family, which is a leaner bird not as fatty. Do note that alot of vaccines use eggs and may a reaction. Not everyone whom is allergic will have an anaphylatic reaction, some have hives, rashes, severe stomach and bowel disruption (cramps, diarrea, vomitting ) headaches, migraines, and swelling.  I have been allergic for over 20 years to chicken and eggs and I still have close family and friends that don't accept it and it is very hard. I was at a wedding for a family member that did not believe. I had steak with sauted mushrooms (that had been martinated with chicken broth) despite my notifing of my allergies. They believed after I projectile vomitted with in 5 minutes of starting to eat. Let say dispite my imbarrisment the people at the table and the bride and groom never questioned my allergies again. On the flip side I have run into people whom don't like certain foods and uses I'm allergic to avoid it. This pisses me off to know end because it taints peoples reaction and what being allergic truely means. One friend whom is anaphylatic now when she goes out has to lay her epi-pen on the table. She then explains to the server that if she eats something and has a reaction that the server must stab her in the leg with this pen to save her life. Just so they take her allergy seriosly. I hope that this can help clear up any doubt. If not have her read this and let her know it is okay either way allergic or just dislikes but truth is best.  I hope I helped

I am allergic to all meat, dairy, treenuts, coaoa, soy, rice, gluten, and many more things.....I was having intestinal and asma like syptoms, even thoought I was having heart attacks a few times. when I went for testing a few years back I was in shock. I mean< I always avoided meat cause it caused extreme pain- first in my stomach and then into my chest and jaw ( just like a heart attach....

anyway, as long as I stick to a veggie diet ( and I have to be careful-cause I'm allergic to certains veggies and fruits as well) i'm fine.

it's not been easy.....

same symptoms here, it itches all over my body specially face and arms. nothing visible like hives, only if I keep scratching I get rash it turns red. every time I eat chicken the itchiness comes about 10 minutes after eating and it last for about one hour I guess depending on how much chicken I eat.

I'm allergic to chicken and eggs (thought I can have some eggs if they are cooked into a cake but I have to go careful other wise I can still have a reaction, there are some great biscuit and cake recipes that don't have eggs). When I first found out no one believed me, my face would swell, I get a rash my asthma would suddenly become out of control and if I was really unlucky I would be sick.

As I got older I found that I can't have any poultry and my reaction is more pronounced.

My mother-in-law accidently put out some crisps out one lunch that contained chicken. I only had a small bit and my reaction was instintaneous. I don't think she really believed me about it until that moment and even now over a year later she still feels bad about it.

Now that I'm older it's nice to know that I'm not the only one out there that has this problem.
