I am 42 years old now, and have been allergic to Poultry for the last thirteen years. My allergy came from a traumatic event that occurred to my physiology. I had a major stroke, my body chemistry changed as all our bodies do from time to time. this one stuck. It is hard for those of who have this allergy to talk to people about it I have found because of the disbelief we get from others, esp when poultry is so prevalent in our society, and in many foods that are precooked, fried rice, hot dogs, frozen pizza's .... you get the idea or know what I am talking about. The worst was and still is family events, where everyone brings dishes, and the non immediate family members forget your allergies. You learn to accept and prepare, you learn too watch your diet. Restaurants are the worst, because apparently this is such an uncommon allergy to hear that they simply do not prepare for it, or worse when they cross contaminate and not care, you learn to do with out the places you would like to go.

I developed a bunch of food allergies as a young adult. Chicken is one of them. When I handle raw chicken (cleaning it), my hands get red and very itchy. When I first developed the allergy, it triggered an asthma attack that sent me to the hospital. We weren't sure it was the chicken, until I had it subsequently and had another attack. I also became allergic to eggs and avocados, both of which would turn my face red, swell my lips, create a tingling burning sensation in my mouth and and trigger an asthma attack. I had less severe reactions to a lot of other foods, though not the typical foods famous for causing allergies. Peanuts okay, no problems with shellfish and no problems with other meats. After eliminating the worst offenders for several years, I tried them, cautiously, again. Haven't had another asthma attack, though I start to feel tingling or a little burning in my mouth and my lips can get puffy. Oh yeah, another problem food, I can't handle dough or be in a room where flour is in the air. That will cause my eyes to water, my nose to stuff and make breathing difficult. Oddly, I can eat bread or cake without a problem. Beer also a problem. I get eyes watering, stuffy and red faced. Vinegar and red wine can also set the same reaction off.
I'm also allergic to cats, dogs, saw dust, grasses, trees--a lot of stuff floating in the air. If I go to Home Depot, I've got to get in and out very fast or I start to react with the red faces, nose stuffed, tearing eyes and feeling lousy.
When these problems began I went to allergist. He gave me scratch tests and almost every scratch reacted and grew so big they almost blended together. It was a very ugly sight.
I got desensitzation shots for years, take antihistamines every day, but no asthma in recent years. The whole thing sucks, but in answer to the original question, yes, a person can be allergic to chicken and the allergic reaction can range from unpleasant to downright dangerous if it triggers a severe asthma attack.

When I was a little girl my mom took me to burger king and order me chicken nuggets. Luckily my mom was a nurse and noticed the symptoms I was having and that I needed medical attention. I found out then I was allergic to poultry. I made sure to pay attention to what I was eating and stayed away from anything poultry related, however I could eat eggs. I would be cautious and would have an epi pen near by if needed. A few years ago I went and got tested and found out I was not allergic to chicken anymore. They had me to the test where I got to eat chicken every half hour and see what my reaction was or if I had any. The weird thing is this evening I had chicken breast and a honey BBQ and after eating it my face got warm and it felt like i had a sore in my mouth. I don't know according to the allergist they said I was not allergic but when eating chicken I still get weird reactions. Please send me some feedback. Like others have said glad I am not the only one :)

Allergies are something you can be born with, but may only manifest later on in life. Your reactions can vary; you might get a severe asthma attack, rashes on some regions of your body, or a fit of sneezing and watery eyes. Antihistamines are the usual remedies for allergies, but be sure use them according to the doctor’s specifications. Others find that a tablespoon of sugar can give instant relief if an antihistamine is not at hand.

I also have allergies to chicken. Not just with that but also with the following: tree nuts, peanuts, dairy products and with eggs. I feel what your girlfriend is experiencing. Just support her and show your earnest concern. It is devastating to have such allergies. She needs your support.

Please believe your friend. I too am allergic to chicken. It would be easier and less embarrasing to be allergic to something other than chicken.

I'm so sorry. I really dislike hearing people being so inconsiderate of others. I hope people become more understanding.
