Omg, I just did this again last night. I have been on steroids also. I wake up with a cough and cant catch my breath, trying to get to the bathroom, keep trying to get air in while still coughing, spit that stuff in the toilet almost throwing -up and heart racing. Finally, I can catch a breath. Now, I don't want to go back to bed because I'm sacred it will happen again. I have experienced this about 5 times in the last 2 months.

Hi, I am up tonight after very similar episode and was googling "what could wake me gasping for air" I found this website. I am 50 yr old female and on synthroid for thyroid issue. This also has seemed to be happening 2-3 times a year over the past few years. I used to think that a bug/spider had crawled in my mouth and down my throat (which used to totally freak me out) but since it has been reoccurring I think mine is acid reflux. I also have had gastroesopageal reflux for last 25 years and have been on meds for it since my 20s. My symptoms sound just like yours tho... I am usually dreaming I can't breathe. Tonight I was in a room on fire and was trying to break the door down before I succumbed to the smoke. When I awake I am coughing, have a hard time talking due to the coughing and my voice is raspy and a lot of stuff seems to be pouring down my throat from the back of my sinuses. However when I try to take a deep breath in, I can breath and also I am not wheezing. It feels like something is in my airway and my throat is raw... probably from the coughing after I awoke however could also be from acid. The main reason I'm thinking it is reflux of stomach acid is because about a year ago they saw evidence of reflux in my airway. And how many tims can a bug crawl in your mouth and down your throat and create the same symptoms. Hope this helps you... helped me to write it out. I was feeling stressed... and didn't want to go right back to sleep

I'm hoping you can answer my question. I can breathe great at night and I sleep. But during the day I gasp for air and it seems like I yawn a lot when I yawn it seems like I get air. And sometimes I will start coughing really bad along with trying to breathe. This is driving me crazy. Please help me.

Hello Madam sunshine, How are you now? Im really worried about you when I read your problem and the symptoms associated with it. My younger brother who is 16 is also having this same problem. He was hospitalized and now on medication. Doctor said he have panic attacks (shortening of breaths). He is physically healthy and have no problems related to ENT and respiratory. But whenever he coughs, his cough is followed by big coughs and feels like something saliva or thicky fluid is blocking his way to breath and he feels serious suffocation and shortening of breaths and about to die. Doctor have said he will be fine soon. I feel very bad about my brother. I love him very much, he is not only my brother but like my baby boy. Madam, you also may have same type or some kind of psychiatric problem so please get a doctor. I wish u good health and fast recovery. Please let me know your health condition.

This is what's been happening to me this past month, twice so far. Waking up with a block airway gasping for air and choking on thick fluid of some sort, shoot out of bed onto all fours desperately trying to breathe
