I've gained 15 pounds on Mirena. I would read up on it before you have an IUD inserted. I'm getting it taken out in a couple weeks.

You actually don't have to of been pregnant although the insertion is easier if you have been.

It does make you gain weight and the worst part is the spotting. You will basically be wearing panty liners the whole time you have it because it happened.to me. I had it removed after 12 months because i couldn't deal with the spotting.

My daughter was thin her whole life. She took the Depo shot 1 month before her wedding and in 2 months had suddenly gained 20 pounds. Birth control DOES make you gain weight!

IUD makers and Drs. are liars or are in denial. I have had Mirena for 1.5 years now. I have put on 15 lbs. I was a meter reader for part of the time and packed a great and healthy lunch. My environment was not inductive for heavy snacking. In addition, on average my route gave me from 10 miles to 15 miles of walking per day and I did it 4xs per week. The other 2 days were driving routes but still was getting in and out of my car and walking to houses for 7.5 hours a day. Why do I mention all this....? Because during that time I did not lose 1 pound. Actually, I was putting on weight, about 1-2 lbs every 2 weeks. It was insane. So naturally, I thought something was wrong with me. Went to the Dr. had blood work done several times, spent $500+ and everything came back good????? So, after reading all the conversations, it is obvious that it is my IUD. Next week I have an appointment set to have it removed. Be wise and do your homework!!!

No you don't have to have been pregnant to use an IUD. I have never been pregnant and I've been using one for almost 5 years. However, for myself, my mother and my sister.. we all gained a little weight with the IUD.
