I too have had significant weigt gain to the depo shot....I had been on depo for about 3 yrs when before i had my daughter with no neg side effects so after i had my dgtr i had mirena inserted however after about 6 mnths my body expelled it and i had no insurance the doc gave me a mnth of free bc pills. but soon eneough it was time to find inexpensive effectv bc i went to my local clinic and started on bc have now been on about 2.5 yrs the first year i was happy with my results however when i quit smoking in june of 09 i went to get my shot in july and had gained 5 lbs no biggie i was under wgt anyway and figured it was du to the smking went back in october had gained another 15 lbs!! no way it was just du to smking but stl i was okay with it but when i went back for my last apmnt in jan i had gained anothr 10lbs! doc sd this is normal side effect of depo and that it is more likely with long term use but may have been trigger by the non smoking as when i was smking the nicotine was keeping the metoblism moving and the depo slows the metoblism down. so any way when i go in i am looking to get off depo and find other means i wasnt even this big when i was 9mnths preg,.

You do NOT have to have been pregnant prior to getting an IUD anymore. I asked my gyn about this & she said that women use to have to have been pregnant but it's becoming a more popular option for younger women in monogamous relationships. I am thinking about getting it because my husband & I are not ready for children but I have heard several scare stories from close friends who have had them. Two of my best friends have had them. One of them bled for 4 months on & off & she is no longer allowed to have it. her dr said it didn't agree with her. My other friend loved it for about 6 months then started having crazy mood swings & bleeding. She also had to have it removed.

On another subject I took Yasmin when I was about 19 until I was about 21. For the first 1 1/2 yrs it was great! I lost weight (which was great b/c ortho-lo made me FAT FAT FAT!) My moods were better, my period was better, & I quit breaking out completely. I never broke out much to begin with but it was nice to stop having my monthly period breakout. haha! After about 1 1/2 yrs though, I developed severe anxiety/borderline depression. My period became irregular & I broke out constantly. I started gaining weight until I had gone from a size 6 to almost a 14. That of course made my depress so much WORSE. I was never over a size 6 until ortho-lo but even ortho-lo only made me be a size 8 despite the fact I was a workout-aholic & a health nut in general. When I talked to my Dr. she said it was probably the Yasmin so I stopped taking birth control completely for several months until my body could be 'okay' again. However, it has NEVER been the same again. It makes me sad sometimes b/c I was never an anxious person before. Now I am.

I tried taking Lo-estrin as well & it disagreed with me too. My Dr. said that some women just can't take birth control because it won't agree with them. She said she is one of those women so she agrees. I guess my only other option is the IUD.

I had a Meriana IUD put in 3 months ago and i have been having a hard time with my weight since then I've gained 10 pounds already and I eat rite and walk at least 2 miles daily plus take diet pills. I can't deal with it anymore so I'm having it removed. Not to mention the symptions that makes you feel pregnat. Becareful if you are considering this is an option.

I would be cautious witih taking any type of bayer birth controls. i have been on both yasmin and yaz and two years ago i had to have my gallbladder removed, after having NONE of the typical requirements for gallbladder removal other than taking birth control

Can somebody recommend me a good birth control that doesn’t cause weight gain. This is the first time I am thinking of such contraceptives and I just keep hearing that they cause weight gain. I have managed to lose some and I don’t want it back. How can I know which pills will make me gain weight and which won’t?

I have tried 2 different pills: Alesse, then Yaz. Since starting these pills 5 years ago I have gained almost 70 lbs!

I'd say my eating habits have remained the same but they haven't because of the intense food cravings I've suffered through. Cravings were new to me when i first started on the pill but have since become a way of life. Unfortunate to say the least. With my fiance out of town during the weeks, running out of birth control and not having the time to go back to the doctor's office, I have been pill free for about 3 weeks now and OH MY GOD!

I have never felt so clear headed, my emotions are manageable and NO, ZERO, ZILCHO food cravings!! Food - I could take it or leave it and it's amazing! Without even trying to say "no" to foods or upping any exercise routine I've lost 5 lbs in the first two weeks alone. I can think straight, I'm not foggy and I'm no longer a slave to food!

I'll be going to my doctor's office today to look into non-hormonal birth control options - I'm thinking of the Copper IUD. I hear it's a painful process but that's nothing compared to feeling like a sad-sack ball of c**p EVERY day !!

My sister gained 45 lbs on the shot. My obgyn said it is the only one that is proven to cause weight gain due to the fact it increases your appetite and stores fat reserves bc your body thinks you are pregnant. Everyone has different genetics and there are some people that eat all the time and don't gain an ounce and some who diet and excercise for life just to not be plus size.

That's a myth- I had the Mirena IUD without ever having been pregnant- that's old practice. Most newer doctors are willing to insert one even if you've never been pregnant. I loved my IUD, but had it removed because it was giving me bad acne... the's the only side effect I experienced, though, and I always get that with progesterone pills. If you do get one, though, I recommend taking pain medicine beforehand because it does hurt to have it put in... just for a few seconds, then you'll likely experience mild to moderate cramping for 2 or 3 days. It really was worth it, though!

I went on the pill to control my cramps and blood flow. While it did that, I also gained a good 30 pounds in a year and a half. Before I got on the pill I could eat whatever I want and my weight would not change. After getting on the pill, my appetite increased tremendously! Because of this I got off the pill. My appetite has decreased, and so far I have only lost 5 pounds. They said it will take a while to shed off the pounds. I will have to find some birth control that doesn't have hormones because I do not react well with the hormones.

Note to writer above; it's not an absolute requirement to have been pregnant before having an IUD! I had one for about a year (age 19-20), never pregnant, but the doctors did give me a very hard time about it before they'd agree. The reason for this is that it has caused permanent infertility in some women. (A side effect that outweighed pregnancy for me.) Also they seemed to have a hard time believing I was only with one partner, (rude???) as being with several can also cause severe problems with the IUD.

NOTE: The insertion was PAINFUL, at least for myself & my mother. As in bedridden for 2 days painful. It works almost certainly, yes, but you & your partner can feel it sometimes, esp. if they hit it during intercourse. I also experienced bouts of severe, unexplained pain that felt like the worst menstrual cramps, almost went to the hospital several times for fear it had pierced through my uterus or something! I was so scared. I hear this is not normal, but the pain was more than enough for me to accept the possibility of weight gain on a pill. Still would rather not alter my body's hormonal balance, but see no safe alternative. Frustrating isn't it ladies? What's a girl to do...

NEVER, go on depo if you want to stay away from gaining weight. Of course like everyone has been saying birth control of any kind effects everyone differently, but everyone that I know that has gone on depo including myself has a significant amount of weight. Not to mention the fact that ever since I went on it my cycle has NEVER been the same. I even had it once for 6 months and then 2 months at another time. I don't recommend it :/
