I am about to go on a diet. Not the official type with a name and a schedule and stuff, but a diet in the sense that I am going to try and eat less and better foods, with the intention of losing weight. I think I'm in good company here? Can you help me and give me a list of foods that are great for dieting?

I think that you should start by eating a bit less, and you should opt for healthy but varied foods. Please continue to eat foods from each major food group, or start doing that if you weren't already. You do not have to avoid all fats to get thin, though you should make sure that the fats that you do consume are healthy, such as avocados and coconut oil.
