What do you think of as the "best diet plan", if there ever was any such thing? The reason I am asking is that I really want to go on an effective diet that will help me lose weight. If possible, I'd like it to be a diet that does not require counting the calories of every meal that you eat, and is not too strict. Would you recommend a diet plan to me?

I think that The Scarsdale Diet Plan meets your criteria. I have used this diet before and is great for me. It really did help me lose a lot of weight, and the good thing about The Scarsdale Diet Plan is that there are no very expensive foods. Just every day, super market stuff. Why don't you look into it?
