The difference between Holep & TURP is like night and day. Holep is the way to go now a days. Have not heard of Blake Andersen but I would research where he got his training and how experienced he is with the procedure. Of course, doctors associated the university medical centers are the best but not always available locally. Personally I would recommend Dr. Nicole Miller - at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. I live on the middle east coast of Florida and the trip was well worth it. PS: I am continually amazed how few urologists will recommend anything except what ever they specialize in.

Check to see if they use the Moses Holium laser. Also check how many HoLEP procedures the doctor has performed.

Thanks Philip, I was looking at Dr. Andersons background and he was educated at IU Health Methodist Hospital, IU School of Medicine, The University of Chicago Medical , M.D. Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia . Plenty of education but finding some references who he has worked on is very hard to do. I am going to schedule a consultation with him to go over my issue and get a feel for his personality. Thanks again.

Dr Anderson could not have been trained at a better place. IU School of Medicine is the home of Holep in the USA. Quote: "In the 1990s, IU School of Medicine faculty member James Lingeman, MD was the first urologist in the United States to perform the procedure."

Thanks Philip, That is good to hear that he has good credentials. I will make a note to ask about Dr. Lingeman when I go for a consultation.
I read that Dr. Anderson does the surgery at Miami Valley South hospital in Centerville, Ohio which is only an hour and half from me.

Barry, thanks for your insightful information, it was very helpful. I'm contemplating having the Holep at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville FL with Dr. Chandler Dora. I see that you're from Florida, was wondering in your research why you went to Rochester instead of Jacksonville. Hope your recovery is going well.

Hello Guest:
I am also in Florida --- middle of east coast.
At the time of my Holep surgery Dr Dora was in private practice in Tampa.
I wanted to have surgery done by a doctor associated with a large organization (such as Mayo) or a teaching hospital. Hence, I went wtih Dr Nicole Miller at Vanderbilt University. The experience turned out to be a total success and well worth the trip to Nashville.
That said, by now Dr Dora has 13 years of private practice under his belt and is now associated with the Mayo Clinic. He is probably a good choice if you are in the Jacksonville area.
Just my two cents. Good luck. You will not regret having Holep.

I had HoLEP just last week by Dr. Blake Anderson. He is a very good doctor. He did a 2 year fellowship at IU Health Methodist Hospital and was mentored there by Dr. Amy Krambeck and others. He does the surgery at Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville, OH. He uses the Lumenis MOSES 2.0 holmium laser system.

I had the surgery at 8am. Due to the large size of my prostrate and history of recurrent UTI's, I was kept overnight. I was dismissed the next day at noon. I'm feeling great and so happy that I chose to have this surgery. I would definitely recommend Dr. Anderson

Later, when I'm feeling up to it, I'll register with this site and post my experiences on the "Experiences with Holmium Laser..." thread.

Thanks for sharing. I had surgery two months ago. Only issue I still have is incontinence , so I wear light Guards. Even when I am intimate with my wife, a drop or two of urine leaks out. It’s annoying. Hoping by the third month it will stop. Keep us posted on your progress. Your urethra may be tender for a few weeks. Cheers.

I am scheduled to see Dr. Anderson in Centerville in 2 weeks and I am looking forward to hearing about the HOLEP vs. the TURP. Do you have any idea about how many of these surgeries Dr. Anderson has performed? Looked him up on the Internet and he is a pretty young Dr.

I would never get TURP. That is the old fashioned rotter rooter approach with lots of cutting, like butchery. Many urologists suggest it because that is what they know. It takes a long time to learn HoLEP, so any Dr trained in it should be fine. you can ask the doctor’s office how many HoLEP surgeries he has done. I was number 1,007 for my HoLEP doctor. For a large prostate , HoLEP is the only option really.

I will be happy if I can get rid of the meds I have taken for the last few years.
Who was your doctor?

Dr Tayeb in Temple, TX. You won’t need the meds anymore. You will urinate like a youngster. No sexual issues except dry climax.

Has anyone had any experience with either Dr Michael Dusing or Dr David Knowles, HOLEP or otherwise? Many thanks.
