Can you still go into menopause after you have a hysterectomy?

I'm 45 and I've just started bleeding (bright red) in the last month (over a year since my vaginal hysterectomy..uterus and cervix). I start bleeding a few hours after intercourse. The first time I bled about 2 hours, the next time a bled about 4 hours and quit bleeding around noon then started bleeding again at 6 am (no intercourse) the next morning and bled all day until around 10 pm. I was out of town (it was a Friday) so I went to my ob/gyn the following Monday. They did vaginal exam, urine test and both came back negative, also no sign of granule area seen. Asked another dr to come over and check me also and they did not know...told me to take premarin for two weeks and an antibiotic and come back in 14 days and to avoid intercourse. I did, went for followup and was told it must be a granule or vaginal dryness, so to go about my normal activity and don't worry. I believe our body gives us warning signs for a reason. I don't know what to do now. I have had a feeling of generally not being well for a couple of years and no one can find out why. I've outlived my own mom by almost five years...she died at 41 of breast and bone cancer, so I am greatly concerned about how my body is feeling and now the bleeding... I just don't know what to do. Any ideas about what is wrong or what to do next is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Hi Rebecca,  I had a complete hysterectomy due to fibroids, cysts and endometriosis over 10 years ago as well.  I started bleeding again about a year a go.  Started off as periodic spotting but began to progress.  I went to my GYN doctor and she saw some granulated tissue that was like the size of the point of an ink pen.  She did a biopsy on the tissue and it turned out to be endometriosis.  She gave me birth control pills but that didn't work; made me bleed even more.  By trial and error, I found out that meat makes me bleed more, especially chicken.  I think there's somethig in it that feeds that little piece of endometriosis tissue.  I told my doctor about it but didn't get a favorable response.  But I know it's true because I've tested it several times.  I just wanted you to know that you are not alone.  I'm praying to my Heavenly Father now because I need a solution.  I am married and want to enjoy having sex with my husband again.  That's hard to do if you're bleeding all the time.  I just wanted to encourage you to do your own investigations too.  Don't wait for your doctor to come up with something.  They will only believe what they're told in those books they read.  They don't know how to react when you tell them something that isn't in those pages.  I even asked her about natural progesterone and she ran into a corner of the room and put her hands over her ears (I kid you not)!

Iam 46 and had a hystrectomy 16 years ago. I started bleeding over a week aga, like i am having a light period. I feel light cramping in my low abdaman. I had an appointment with my family Dr. today and frankly im more scared now than before i saw her today. I now have to have a Ct scan, see a urologist and a GYN. Can anyone enlighten me? My hysto was due to endo.

It could be that the endo is still there.  I found out recently that microscopic endo cells could still be present even after a hysto.  Unfortunately, I wasn't told that BEFORE the hysto.  I probably wouldn't have gotten it.  I was checked again just last week, and the point of a pen spot has grown.   I am overweight so my doctor said that the fat in my body could be converting androgen into estrogen which would "feed" the endo.

I'm appealing to God for healing!  He's the only one who REALLY knows what's going on.  I'll be praying for you too.

Hi Missy!

Look at your foods. Check out to see if your meat and dairy products have hormones in them. That feeds the endo.

A hysterectomy slams you right into menopause. It's not a gradual process like a woman who hasn't had one. I woke up from my surgery with a foggy mind. It's been that way since. The only reason I don't regret the surgery is because of the pain and heavy bleeding that caused to miss a lot of work days.

I am in same boat of 10 years post hysterectomy and use to bleed lightly 2-3 days now I bleed constantly. Have an apt for the third time w gyn. it is always vag dryness BUT have been on diet last 6 weeks and only meat I eat is chicken. The bleeding is heavier, I KNOW TS THE CHICKEN AS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE. Could it be the hormones given chickens?
