When mirena was inserted I was very happy with it. I thought I found the perfect bc for myself. I had it in for 5 years. The first 2 years I had very few periods and after that the bleeding stopped. About 4 months ago I had it removed. I was very cranky and my hormones where everywhere. I had my normal cycle the first 2 months but my 3 never ended. I've been bleeding for 2 months now. I've been to the er twice the doctors a handful of times. I got back on bc and that helped slow the bleeding but then became very painful. Know one knows what's goin on and think it might just be my body trying to regulate itself. Finially on the last emergency room visit they said I need a pelvic ultrasound to see what's goin on. The pain is unbearable. I'm just hoping soon they figure it out. I will NEVER USE MIRENA AGAIN. Also I gained about 50 pounds in the first year of using it. Docs say it wasn't the mirena but it's hard to argue when I started eating better when I got on it. I will never recommend anyone getting on this. My aunt also had a bad experience. She bleed after having it removed and the found out she had a tubal pregnancy

I had my Mirena in for almost four years until I started getting bacterial infections the last year.  I then did some research and realized many of my health problems I had dealt with for the last four years were from the Mirena.  I was in and out of the hospital for anxiety which I never had before and also stomach problems such as acid reflux and feeling like something was in my throat.  I am so glad I finally realized it was the Mirena doing all of this to my body.  It also affected my breathing because of the anxiety and stomach issues.  The day I had it out I felt like running a marathon I had so much more energy.  My stomach issues are gone, sex is no longer painful, breathing is better, and no more anxiety.  I can't believe I didn't realize it was the Mirena sooner.  My first period after the Mirena was removed was very heavy with clots and lasted about 7-8 days, my second period seems early and is very heavy also.  It does suck!  Has anyones period gotten back to normal and how long did it take?  I do have an appt to get my tubes cut I am 36 and have three beautiful girls.  So maybe this will help with some of the heavy bleeding.

I gained 20lbs after being at my prior weight for many years, no diet changes and being more active. It seems to all be in my abdominal region as well. I had back pain, nausea, sore breasts, etc. and the doctor almost laughed me out of the office because I was concerned about possibly being pregnant on Mirena. I wish she would have at least suggested that the Mirena could have caused the weight gain and the other symptoms.

>:( I am so miserable. I got mirena removed 16 days ago and still have heavy bleeding, to a point I am scared to move suddenly or sneeze. Clots and all are starting now. Feeling weak, uncomfortable, and like doing absolutely nothing (depressed). I can't believe my doctor was trying to convince me to keep it in longer than a year after mentioning sharp pains and being painful during intercourse. After this experience, I am not the slightest bit interested in having ANYTHING near my vaginal region.

I had my Mirena in for about 3.5 years.  I was having several UTIs and was told by my Urologist to have it removed because that was what was causing them.  I am not sure that the bladder mesh/complications that was inserted and removed 2.5 years after the insertion of my Mirena may not have been the cause for that though.  Anyway, I did not have much cramping or spotting when the Mirena was first removed, but 3 weeks later is a whole different story!  I have been bleeding about 5 days like a "stuck pig" with cramps in my lower back and heavy, heavy red blood with clots.  I was really, really scared at first, but I think my body may just be "making up for lost time".  My OB/GYN had never told me that this could happen, but after talking to the nurse, she indicated that everybody's body is different.  I hope it is just a huge period because I sure did think I was about to lose a kidney or something...ugh!

After reading all these posts I am starting to believe our doctors don’t have a clue about what we should expect after having the Mirena removed.  Many of us have had the thing in for the extended periods of time and others of us shorter time periods.  What I’m seeing is most of the posts are from having the Mirena removed for just a few days to a couple of months previous.  Hardly any of the posts are from six months out of having it removed, except from one lady who said that she had had hers removed three years ago and was still having problems.

My own story is that I had long heavy painful periods since the age of 13 and I’m now 55.  Since the age of 45 they were getting longer and harder with clots the size of my thumb.  Lots of pain and I was eating ibuprofen for 5 of the 7 days I was bleeding.  No children.  I had the Mirena inserted May 2, 2012 and had it removed May 22, 2013.  During that time I had practically no periods, not even enough to wear a panty pad.  There were only slight traces of blood when I would go to pee.  However, (and I’m a big girl, anyway) I gained twenty pounds.  Nothing would bring it off.  I went on several different diets, walked lots more, and pounds just kept coming on.  My doctor ignored me and would not return my calls (the VA, by the way).

I finally was able to have this thing removed by a civilian doctor.  He did it, but he also said the Mirena wasn’t the cause for my weight gain.  He said that I would have some spotting for about a week, which, sure enough, came to pass.  May 30 I was done with the bleeding, which had been relatively light.  I started bleeding again on June 15 and assumed it was my period.  It continued to be relatively light until June 26 when it started escalating, heavier and heavier.  Sunday I had to walk out of the choir loft during the sermon because I was afraid I was going to leave a mess on the seat and the back of my choir robe.  Today is Wednesday, July 3 and I’m still bleeding, bright red and lots of it.  No clots, though.  At least that’s something to be thankful for.  I am going to be watchful for 2 more weeks and then call my doctor if things haven’t calmed down.

All I can say is I truly believe our doctors don’t know what to expect, either.  In the meantime, get the word out for women to avoid this product.  A simple piece of paper at your work station with the word ‘Mirena’ on it with a big red X directly over the word and then at the bottom of the page put ‘Ask me about it.’  Tell all your family and friends and post it on every Mirena site you can find.  Tell the guys, too.  Who knows, maybe one of their family members is considering this thing.

The mirena was the worst decision I've made for my body.  I am a healthy 28 year old female who has suffered terribly heavy periods for her whole life.  Not only was the mirena insertion a disaster (they couldn't get it in because my cervix wasn't clearly open to them?!?) but I bled even heavier than my usual period for two months straight.  WITH unbearable contraction like shooting pains every week.  I gained 8 lbs, lost my sex drive, and has fits of hysterical crying and depression.

I found this forum because I had the mirena removed today and what a surprise.....I'm bleeding extremely heavily.  How can my body take so much blood loss?!?  I suppose I want to know when it will end.  I'm a huge advocate for NO MIRENA e since no doctor has been able to explain my symptoms or offer any help.  Any idea of when I can wear a thong instead of a diaper again?

Hi all, I have very, very heavy bleeding with clots, 2 days after Mirena was removed. Have been to the docs and they think it is a build up of the uterine wall due to the progesterone from the coil. Now the coil has gone it is just shedding that wall. I went to a & e after 6 hours of continual bleeding, they are contacting my gp to ensure I get an appointment tomorrow and that will progress to a scan if nothing changes. I cannot stress enough that you need to go to your gp asap to get the ball rolling and hopefully put your mind at rest. Good luck

I just got mine removed today after having it inserted for five years.  The reason I got it was extremely heavy bleeding causing anemia and many cases of ruined clothes and furniture (work and home).  I am now 54 years old. I had periods until Jan 2012 which was the last one.  My doctor told me today that this week I would have some bleeding, after that, if I have bleeding I should call and come back to the office, and I will do just that if I experience the same as you ladies here.  I have a very good physician practice that I see and I trust that they will do right by me.

If you are having problems after a week or even two, I believe you need to see someone else!  This practice gave me choices and keeps their patients informed.  I am hoping I do not fall back into what I had five years ago.  I should be beyond the period stage of my life now and I know I cannot get pregnant because my tubes are tied.

I wish us all luck and better health.

I absoustly HATE mirena and do not recomend it at all! I'm going through super plus tampons AND pads within 10 minutes, I had it removed in may so 2 months ago and have been having heavy bleeding for almost 3 weeks ! Its terrible ! Most of the time I go through a tampon within 5 minutes but if I'm lucky its 10 mins, plus huge golf ball size clots :( when will this ever end ! :(

Ladies, i had mine removed 2 days ago and having bad bleeding and clotting.  My doc is referring me to the ER, it isn't normal.  If you soak a pad hourly then go to the ER to make sure there isn't anything odd going on.

I went back to the doc at her request after 4 weeks. Ultrasound was good, bloodwork shows in menopause. A round of antibiotics and I haven't bled since the second day of those. Please, please see you doctor if you bleed past one week!!
