Hey there. I'm not sure if it's from Herpes or not, or how close in relation a fever blister is to a cold sore, I just got one of these guys and this is my first attempt to find out what it is. Everyone seems to be saying the same thing about going to the dentist and then getting one. I woke up with two on my upper lip this morning and like you, started freaking out a little bit. My lips were insanely dry the past two days, and two days ago, with near cracking dry and chapped lips, I happened to smoke(tobacco) out of a pipe, and sometimes a foul moisture happens a little bit on the end of the pipe, and that might have gotten into my near cracking lip. It only confuses me because that was two days ago, I didn't smoke yesterday or anything and I woke up with it today. In addition I will say that my immune system is less than great. That may be helpful to some of you.

Lol. Children can get cold sores they are NOT the same thing as genital herpes. It is a completly different virus! As a matter of fact, bad teeth ( cavaties, abscess) can cause cold sores. You do not have to kiss anyone or LOL eat anyone out! You can get them at any age, and unfortunetly once u get one, you will get them through out your life! Many times having a cold itslef or flu can bring one on, or if you have dry, cracked lips you can also get one. There is no cure for them only creams to shorten the healing time, but I have heard that garlic is the only thing that can possibly cure it. There is a special antibiotic found in garlic called ancillin that works better than most prescription antibiotics. It must be fresh crushed or chewn garlic though, it should actually taste a little burny in a sense. Crush it and put it on your lip several times per day and it will go away. But if you have a toothache go to the dentist because if it is an abscess causing it you must get real antibiotics as well! They can be very dangerous and spread to all pars of your body, eating away at your tissue and possibly even kill you if left untreated. Hope this helps, Dawn

So, I know I get cold sores. I've gotten them for years. And, as someone above me commented, you can have the virus your entire life without it ever showing symptoms until one day it decides to. It's just a fact of life. It sucks, but such is life.
So, I came looking for answers regarding a cold sore and dental treatment connection. I see that other people have the EXACT same symptoms that I have. I started going to the dentist in December, and a week later the first cold sore I've had in 2 years pops up. January, same thing. Went back to the dentist, and hello cold sore. This month, I went to the dentist, and they only numbed my top lip to do a filling on one of my front teeth...about the same amount of time passed (about a week) and I got the mother of all cold sores right in the middle of my top lip. I have NEVER had a cold sore anywhere on my top lip...always the bottom lip. So I started to wonder if the dental work had anything to do with this new development. What I'm wondering is if the novocaine isn't causing some sort of a reaction in our bodies and causing this to happen? And if it is, is there anything else we can do at the dentist besides novocaine, or deal with it? I really don't need another reason to hate the trips to the dentist. I also have a prescription to clear it up, but was wondering if I started taking it daily before I go to the dentist, if it would help prevent this from happening again.
Such is life and all that, but I work in retail, and I'm tired of the "looks".
Last but not least...I have also noticed that when I use any kind of a lip balm or gloss that "tingles" I seem more prone to getting a cold sore. Has anyone else experienced this also?

Freaky. I've been miserable the last 24 hours thinking i've got a cold sore - only had them once or twice. But this thing on the outside of my bottom lip just looks like a white blister. I've been googling for the last twenty minutes 'white cold sores' - then fell across this page. Now for all I know this may be the beginnings of a cold sore - but surprise, surprise - I was at the dentist yesterday afternoon - and the blister appeared within two hours of my visit. It was just a regular check-up - but I can confirm the dentist wore latex gloves whilst using her implements! Weird huh?

I have this same concern towards tingling lip balm... When my husband and I went visiting Christmas Eve, I put on my Lip Venom. It stings your lips and makes them plump and super shiny. My lips are always dry and peeling like crazy and I have a bad habit of picking at them. Anyway, Christmas morning I woke up with a swollen, sore bottom left lip. It wasn't so noticable, but if you looked very close there were tiny blisters clustered together that leaked out clear fluid when I started picking at them. I am concerned that it could be a cold sore since they are quite common, but the pictures I looked at of cold sores are bright red sores that you can spot on someone 20 feet away. Whatever it is has been healing nicely. This is day two and its feels and looks as if it could be gone tomorrow. I ended up throwing away my $16 tiny tube of lip venom because if it's a trigger for whatever is on my lip then I'd rather do without. Carmex seems to keep my lips from chapping real bad but it doesn't work for everyone. I just thought that a cold sore would take much longer to heal because this happened rather quick and I never had the tingle that people feel before a cold sore comes out. And also it is not scabby. It feels a little rough like dry skin. Could it be just a irritated lip with a cluster of water-filled blisters? If this happens again I will get it tested to make sure. No more tingly lip balm for me.
