I started taking laxatives about a month ago and they were working smoothly for me. I only took them 4 days in a row. Now this month, today, I took 3 in the morning and now I went to the bathroom five times. The first three times were alright although the stool was black after the second. The 4th I noticed blood but wasn't too worried about it. Now the 5th time I see blood again but this time there's pain. I assume this is a side effect of taking the laxatives. I am a bit worried about today, since this hasn't happened the last time I tried taking laxatives.

If it looks like tar, and you're not on iron tablets, that's a danger sign - see the doctor ASAP.
Re earlier messages about red blood (different person) - if you have no other symptoms, that's either haemorrhoids or anal fissures. Treatable with common OTC products. (Even if it's some minor self-inflicted injury to the mucuous membrane further up - enough said!)
