I am a 19 year old MALE and have had the same symptoms since November. They went away almost completely in December and January and have since returned. My stress levels are definitely up and then seeing it makes me more stressed.
I haven't seen a doctor because I'll freak out when it happens, but my stool will be normal the next day and I'l blow it off.
It bothers me that NO ONE in this thread has found a real answer.

I'm a 25 year old female in the uk, no kids, loads of stress recently tho. A few weeks ago i had diarrhea for a few days, not particularly bad tho. After that stopped i noticed mucus on my stools and i kept getting cramps and a lot more gas than normal. Eczema has also broken out on my upper arms, neck and face which isn't normal for me but could just be from the stress. Over the last few days i've had sharp pain when i passed a stool and i've noticed fresh blood, sometimes just a bit on the tissue but now more often it's mixed in with the stool giving it a slight maroon coloring. My appetite has also dropped and i seem to be very gradually losing weight. I've seen so many possible causes online but it could fit with any number of them, very frustrating but i'm glad to see i'm not alone!! Fortunately we have a national health system here but i don't want to go to the docs unless it persists cuz i've had bad experiences with my local doctors before- they are often rude or patronizing and just fob me off with the simplest explanation and chuck a prescription at me which never solves the problem (i could rant about this for hours, grrr!) i'm gonna try cutting down on dairy and gluten to see if the symptoms calm down at all but if it continues or gets worse then i'll have to bite the bullet and see a doctor and, if they can't figure it out, make sure they refer me to a specialist asap.
I agree that most of us seem to be women but this could be cuz men are less likely to seek help or look/post online for answers? Also, only about half of us have had children or are over 30 but it could be a trigger or contributing factor in some way? We do all seem to be stressed but i think my stress is exacerbated by these symptoms, it's a catch 22 and with the economy and unemployment the way it is it's hard not to be stressed!! I hope everyone who has posted finds a solution to the problem, keep us all informed with any developments :-)

I'm a 53 yr old woman who is now having mucus y discharges. I've been working with a Kinesiologist who is finding that I have a lot of food allergies...and surprisingly to healthy stuff like garlic, onions, broccoli and the cabbage family. I get very bloated and gassy and now the discharge. My first thought is cancer but I AM NOT buying into that. I figure that my body is adjusting itself. I've started a serious walking program (I"m headed to walk 500 miles across Spain later this summer) and think that the mucus is all part of getting out moving my body.
I am having a colonoscopy done soon to be safe. I would recommend everyone try to find someone in their area who does muscle testing...and let your body tell you whats going on.

Well I can relate to most of you. I've been having the exact same problems. I'm an 18 year old female. I have had the mucus and sometimes blood in stool. I've had a lot of gas and bloating. But I've also had constipation and sometimes looser stool. All I can think about is that I possibly have cancer. I've also had some cramping. I'm terrified. Everything I've read on the internet makes it sound like that's what's wrong.

I am 31 years old and I have had blood and mucous in stool for 2 months. I was even passing mucous and blood with no stool. Prior to my scheduled colonoscopy, I decided after much reading to follow a diet that was for people with IBS. I got a bit better but still had gas bloating and urgent bowel movements. It was not until I cut out gluten that my symptoms subsided!!!!! The blood and mucous remained bc after the colonoscopy was done it reveiled I had colitis and some hemmroids. Obviously something was causing my colon to become inflamed!! The medication Mesalamine started working immediately. Since I was comfortable that the bleeding and mucous subsided a lot, I decided to try gluten again, and instantly my symptoms came back. I tested negative for celiac disease BUT I DO have some sort of gluten intolerance!!!! My GI told me to stop eating it if it is bothering me. A gluten free diet as well as staying away from whole grains and whole wheat and dairy is the only thing that has helped. Try it!!! NO GLUTEN, DAIRY,WHOLE GRAIN(WHEAT). Eat white rice for a couple of days and see if it works. GOOD LUCK!!!

Hello everyone sounds like we have alot in common.I have been getting these flare ups of blood and mucous in my stool for about 3 years now, they last for about 2 to 3 weeks when i treat them with a product from www.fonoils.com called roid relief. Although i have no pains in my rectum or itching associated with hemorhoids I use the roid relief put 3 drops on top of each foot and rubb it in 3 or 4 times a day. This sounds crazy but it works I promise you it stops the bleeding and the mucous in about 1 week but use the whole bottle. These oils absorb quickly into the blood stream through the veins on your feet and stop the source of the bleeding and the mucous.I know about holding gas because you feel like your going to spill in your under shorts so please try this and let me help you with the same problem i have been having for years just remember it goes away for months but I still get flare ups about 8 months to a year apart, but this is the only relief from it I have found.Good Luck

There are numerous conditions that can cause mucous and blood in the stool. More common ones are fissures and hemorrhoids which can be both internal (inside colon) and external outside the colon causing blood and itching. The next common condition is an infection of the colon (overgrowth of bacteria) called C. Difficile which can be contracted or is often caused from taking certain antibiotics: mayoclinic.com/health/c-difficile/DS00736. I was recently diagnosed with this (27 years old), but did not have the diarrhea which is a symptom. I also have IBS, so I'm normally constipated. I felt the sudden urge to go, and went constantly for the next three hours, harder stool to increasingly softer stool (but not diarrhea), along with blood and mucous. C. Defficile is a form of colitis, an inflammation of the colon lining. If left untreated it can be serious. Recommend anyone with these problems tell your doctor you'd like a stool sample tested. Other causes can be Anal Fissure, Colon Cancer, Colon Polyps, Crohn's Disease, Diverticulitis (Diverticulosis), Hemorrhoids, Peptic Ulcer, and Stomach Cancer. Some of these are serious, some not so. Do not assume that blood and mucuous is automatically cancer. Increase your probiotics (yogurt, take VSL #3 packs (.vsl3.com/VSL3/default.asp)). They keep the good bacteria fighting these conditions. Talk to your doctor, give them a stool sample, and go see a GI specialist (colonscopies aren't as scary as they used to be).

Hi all, I am a 34 year old man and I got to tell you that looking up these symptoms online has not really encouraged me to go see a doctor. I have the exact problems as many of you here... bloody mucus stool gas and ergency to go to only end up pushing out mucus gas and blood... and all I read about those of you that have gone to doctors and specialist with no results... like I said sure does not encourage me to go and see one myself. Besides that I have been by my dad's side for 4 months in and out of the hospital seeing first hand the kind of treatment people get in the medical care world... very disappointing.

I'm a 25 year old male and I'm experiencing the same thing, and have been for about 3 years. Symptoms started as occasional blood in the stool, flat stools, left sided abdominal pain, and mild constipation. Over time the symptoms seemed to come and go, and about a year ago I began seeing mucus mixed with the stool. Over the past several months, I've began discharging more mucus, having hyperactive bowel noises, and for the past few weeks I've had the urgency to go (particularly in the morning) and only discharge bright red blood - sometimes mixed with mucus. This is almost a daily thing at this point, and it's as common for me to just discharge mucus as it is to have a normal BM - "normal" still meaning flat, and often streaked with blood.
I just finally worked up the courage to have a colonoscopy on Monday (stupid, I know, after years of worrying that I'm dying) and all the surgeon found was "redness" in the rectum. No polyps, no growths, no masses, no tumors. He took a biopsy and I'm (anxiously) awaiting the results now, and here is my suggestion for everyone reading and posting to this message board:
1) Have a freaking colonoscopy. It was more pleasant than getting my teeth cleaned - and I love my dentist. The drugs they give you are fantastic (versed and demerol for me), it's statistically as safe as riding a public bus, and you can literally sleep through the whole thing. I did. Don't postpone, but try to ask around and find a good GI or surgeon. If you don't get one, you will never get an answer.
2) Don't rely too heavily on what you find on the internet unless it's from a credible source. Message boards are good, but if you're reading the experiences of those with colon cancer, you'll definitely start thinking you have it... which will compound the stress you're probably already feeling. Recently I've discovered that Google books are totally engrossing you can find amazing detail on symptoms from medical texts. Great stuff.
3) Check into solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (kinda rare, but the same symptoms), food/gluten/lactose allergies, and polyps.
4) POST your experience *after* you get an answer. You don't have to sign up for anything if a board requires an account, but please share the info with everyone.
I'll let everyone know what the outcome was for my case. The hours (probably hundreds) of reading that I've done over the past years had me completely convinced that I had a large carcinoma in my colon or rectum.

did anyone get a diagnosis yet. i too have urgency to go and only mucus comes out. It started when pregnant with my 3rd child last jul-aug 2006. it seemed to have died down but has returned worse than before and the mucus is now often brownish. is this some type of intestinal bug??
I am generally well otherwise and have never had any serious illness.
My dear you have a parasitic infecction. You must have your stool checked
for traces of eggs or active live bacteria. Metrodinazole(Flagyl) is the
medication of choice. However this infections are stubborn and sometimes
last for months.Castor oil purges are also effective in some people.
The gas is a byproduct of bacterial microorganisms, the most gas
the most severe the infeccion.Gas X and Gaviscon will not help or cure it.
Most of my patients respond very well to Metrodinazole-Terramicin
treatment.Ask your health provider for a prescription,You must be
under treatment for 2 weeks. The mucus you see in the stool is produced
by your colon to protect the inner walls from damage. meaning your
colon is responding well to infecction. relax you will live..!

Oh wow I am glad I finally went to this sight! I have pretty much the same story as all of these women. I have been living with this problem since after I had my second child in 2007. I been to so many Dr.s (Gi,Rhuemo,Endo,Allergist,OBGYN,Neuro, and regular PC) for it they all did there test and only came up with hypothyroid issues was treated for it until thyroid got regulated and guess what its back and worse than ever. You name i have had the test done! I m 32 years old pregnant with child number 3 and am scared this problem will never go away!(Oh thyroid levels are normal now???) It has gotten worse over the years no pain at first but now BAD! I was told fissurs too , stress, thyroid, high blood pressure, not eating right, need more fiber, need more water, need to be on previcet for ever, and so on no real answer. I even went so far as to change jobs because I did believe it was all stress from work but you know what the dr.s stress me out ! I was always health until this. Now i have headaches more than 3 times week since July going on since before i was Prego!Crazzzzyness! I have been tested for Gluten allergies they say that I am tolerant to gluten so??? One irrgular CPK reading landed me in the hospital they still can t figure out what caused it???? Any answers
Thanks

You just described my symptoms exactly and I am too pregnant. I am STRESSED, not eating right, my dad is dying and work has just been crazy. And it does bother me too that no one has gotten a real answer for what is going on with all of us here.

I have had similar symptoms and I have been diagnosed after a colonoscopy with Ulcerative Colitis (a chronic condition with no cure, but usually manageable with medication). I have what they call Pancolitis which is a subcategory of Ulcerative Colitis where the entire colon (and large intestine) is inflamed and bleeding. Most times the inflammation is limited to around the rectum or left side of the colon/large intestine. I also have lots of blood and mucus in my stools. It started with horrible diarrhea that lasted for about 3 weeks with bloody chunks. Now after my colonoscopy I am having issues with the stool being too hard which is why I am on this forum trying to figure out why. I am up in the middle of the night for the umpteenth time unable to sleep and passing only mucus and blood. Really loud gurgling in my stomach and a low to moderate amount of pain in my stomach (usually left, above and to the right of my belly button). I would definitely recommend a visit to a GI doctor. At least he/she can make sure that the bleeding is not more serious than a fissure/hemmorhoid. This is especially important if you find that you still have stomach pain and are not going to the bathroom as much as you were because sometimes it can cause 'toxic megacolon' where the intestine becomes perforated and the stool begins to leak into your abdominal cavity causing illness that eventually could lead up to death.
Don't ever be afraid to tell someone if you are bleeding. It is embarrassing but not worth your life.
Best wishes!

I was misdiagnosed w/IBS & wheat allergies for yrs until I finally found out that I had a intra-rectal prolapse from pushing too hard during childbirth. That prolaspe caused a solitary rectal ulcer which mimicks all the symptions of IBS. It cannot be detected w/colonoscopies. There are (2) tests, not very nice ones, barium enema & manometry. Once the diagnosis was determined, I went to see a colorectal surgeon--but by that time I had suffered 11 yrs & the prolapse had fallen even more. I had the operation done laparoscopicly & the ulcer eventually healed. I'm a new person now. I can leave the house before 1PM! If any of you are close to Manhanttan, NY Prebyterian is the place to go. Hope that helps.

I'm having the same issues... Does anyone else have IBS with constipation? I'm hoping that's the only reason I'm getting this... I've never had anything like this before in my life.
