I am 21 years old. Sometimes at the end of my dreams I am dying because I can't breath, and then when I wake up I really have to struggle to catch my breath. My lungs are burning as though I really was having trouble breathing while i was sleeping all along. It usually seems to happen when I accidentally fall asleep on my back...anybody think anything about that. I mean it's terrifying stuff really because I wake up gasping for air and it takes a couple of minutes to feel okay again. Am I too young to have sleep apnea?...my mother does have it, could be genetic I guess???

Are you overweight?
That's the usual cause of sleep apnea and it sure sounds like that's what you have.

Believe it or not njoynlife, I am only 110lb. I actually have TROUBLE keeping weight on, haha. And I don't really ever snore unless I'm extremely tired, which is why i was so confused by the possibility of apnea. I just wake up gasping for air sometimes feeling like I've been held under water and my throat is constricted or something. Could asthma be a possibility maybe? Thanks for your reply :-)

That's what is so strange. I'm not overweight at all! I'm 5'6 maybe and weigh 110 lb. I actually have TROUBLE keeping weight on. And I don't really ever snore, unless I am extremely exhausted. That's why the possibility of sleep apnea shocked me. But I read online there is a such thing as "pediatric" s.apnea, and most kids aren't overweight...so i don't know. I also heard that asthma could be a possibility. I just know that when I wake up every once in a while my lungs burn like I've been under water for too long and my throat feels...everything feels, constricted maybe is the correct word. My breathing feels strained and it stings. I take deep breaths for a couple minutes and I'm back to normal, but it really is terrifying! Thx. for your reply by the way :-)

I used to wake up once in a while as I was first going to sleep at night, with a similar thing. It was like I forgot to breathe or something and I'd wake up suddenly and jump up and breathe real fast to make up for not breathing. It hasn't happened in the past 20 years but I still forget to breathe once in a while when I'm awake. It seems that I can get so engrossed in something that's going on that I forget to breathe.

I had heart bypass surgery 14 years ago and they put me on two blood pressure pills when I left the hospital. One in particular was to keep my heart from speeding up like it would normally do when you do some quick exercise. I suppose that was to prevent a blow out while the bypasses healed together. After the operation I used to have trouble getting to sleep because I always felt like I was suffocating when I went to bed. By accident, I discovered that if I stopped taking one of the pills I had no more suffocating feelings. I didn't fight with the doctor about it at all. He asked me why I wanted to stop taking something that was good for me? Somehow I didn't agree that feeling like I was suffocating was "good for me". I just told him I was NOT taking that pill any more.

Is it possible your heart rate is dropping too low when you go to sleep?
